Anatomy of a Play: The Big Hitter Breaks Down the Cruz 99 Yard Touchdown Catch PDF Print E-mail

In an earlier thread, I wrote an analysis of the Manning-to-Manningham 38 yard completion that drove the Giants to their Super Bowl victory over the Patriots. I had so much fun doing so that I have decided to follow it up with a breakdown of the Victor Cruz 99 yard touchdown catch against the Jets. As before, I am attaching two videos with which readers can use to help follow the play. One video is an HD game version from Fox Sports. The second is a homemade utube version which, although of much poorer quality, better shows the defensive coverage. I hope that you all enjoy it.

Why I Root For Tom Coughlin PDF Print E-mail

First written and published in 2007, before the Giant's amazing playoff run to a SuperBowl victory.

I grew up in Syracuse.  I am 51 years old.  Syracuse University sports was a big part of my life.  My Dad was a guy who was hard to know.  He had problems communicating with his two sons because of a fractured childhood that was filled with serious illness and dislocation.  But he could get through to my brother and me with sports.  It was natural then that we all became intense fans.

My earliest memories of attending sporting events are from 1963.  The last game that the Nationals played in Syracuse before they moved to Philadelphia and became the 76ers.  Technically, that's not correct.  There was an interim agreement in place that had the Sixers play a couple of regular season games in Syracuse.  That lasted for about 4 years, as I recall.  Yankee Stadium against the Chisox in August.  And then the Giants in the fall.

As far as rooting for the Orange, the sustained memories begin in 1966.  This was the season of the Floyd Little-Larry Csonka tamden at RB and FB, respectively.  That season culminated in a loss to Tennessee in the Gator Bowl on December 31, 1966.  The team's determination to run the football during that era was simply consistent with how the game was being played throughout the country.  Little rushed for 216 yards in the game.  Csonka added another 114.  But still the Orange lost.  They were continually jammed up inside the Vols' ten yardline.  The wingback on that club was #49.  He hailed from Waterloo, N.Y., just west of Syracuse.  He was Tom Coughlin.

BBH Draft Coverage 2012 - TE Preview PDF Print E-mail

The talent available
This has to be the weakest position in the draft by far as not only are there few top end talents, there are actually very few players available that even merit being drafted. Needless to say this preview didn't take very long to write!

What do I think the Giants should do?
The Giants lost both starting TE Jake Ballard and back-up Travis Beckum to torn ACL’s in the Super Bowl and though it is unlikely either will be back to start the season - if at all - having signed the talented Martellus Bennett as a free agent to go along with Bear Pascoe they probably have ‘enough’ at the position to get by. However, there is a school of thought that suggests a premier pass catching TE could make up for the loss of Mario Manningham and effectively replace the 3rd WR...

How will things play out on draft day?
Even the best TE prospects tend to see their value drift during the draft as WR’s are more sought after. This year I envisage just one player being selected in the 1st round, another in the mid-2nd and maybe two more in the 3rd round. Beyond that there may be the odd bargain in the mid-late rounds but in truth most players available have so many holes in their game that most will be ST’s only players or camp fodder during their brief NFL careers.
