I like that he thinks the Bears were bold, but the Giants made a mistake.  Like the Peppers contract wasn't overpaying?

The contract is not a bad contract by any means.....We paid him high dollars because that is what the market bears.....And in 18 months he will be the 4th or 5th highest paid S in the game....We all knew Eli when he signed the highest contract in the game was not the best and we all knew he would be surpassed...Same here....

If 3 years down road - he is still highest paid S in the game - then I hope is a top 2 or 3 guy...

But this was a huge need and to avoid being outbid for a huge need - we ponied up and rightfully so. King may be seeing it a different way...

And I listened to King a million times on WEEI - Boston radio - I get the impression he was more a Pats fan than Giants fan..

Nope he's a Giants' fan.  Admitted so several years back on ESPN Radio on the Cowherd show.

You gotta think that from Adrian Wilson's perspective he is going to be sad to see Rolle leave.   His job just got a lot more difficult.  Not to say Rolle wont have his hands full here especially if he's playing alongside CC Brown and not K Phillips

Let's remember this ... Pete is a lifelong Giant fan, born and raised in Enfield, CT.  So there certainly isn't any anti-Giant bias in his commentary.  As a matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he read this Board from time to time.

Nah. He's written many times about growing up a Giants fan, but distanced himself from that when he became a sportswriter and shows no favoritism toward the team. In fact he's even a bit indifferent or even hostile to the Giants on occasion.

This is a good board, but I doubt he reads it!

If the Giants move up to get Eric Berry, Rolle can be the second best safety on the Giants too. Then pick Sean Lee and they are set at those 2 positions. Yeah, keep dreaming.

I consider myself a big Peter King fan.   I love listening to him on Sirius.  He doesn't often go overboard on subjects and when he states an opinion it is usually well thought out.  I do agree that at times he may be a little to tough on the Giants perhaps because he is an admitted Giant fan.

But I have to disagree with him on this.   I don't think that what the Giants paid for Rolle was much if any beyond his market value.  If he had left NY without a contract I could see him signing with someone soon after that for probably pretty close to what the Giants gave him.  And the Giants filled a huge need.   It took a position of dire need and made it into possibly a true strength.  I am extremely happy with this signing.

One other thing--King is not the only one who doesn't think much of this signing.  Alex Marvez on Fox.com called the Giants one of the big losers in free agency because of the signing of Rolle.

The truth is we obviously wont know until they start playing the game.
Remember last year many of the talking heads were lauding the Giants for the moves they made in free agency.   And we all know how that turned out don't we.

King isn't wrong, but the Giants needed to make the move. I put up his stats in another thread and they aren't that impressive, but with Phillips coming back from a career threatening injury and not knowing what you will get in the draft, what better choice was there? Rolle will be a very solid player for the Giants whether they paid too much for a real need or not. He won't be a disappointment like LY at all. He's young and healthy and can play two positions.

The best player in the draft might be Eric Berry. If there is any way the Giants can get this kid, they would, but there really is no way unless he's there for a willing trade. I would still do it if I could and that would give the Giants the absolute best secondary in all of football.

The only thing he isn't wrong about is that the Giants overpayed.  They probably did overpay a little, but everyone overpays in FA if you want the top talent and we wanted the top FS talent available.  His reasoning is really, really bad and it makes his point look worse.  A year from now, Rolle will not be the highest paid safety and 2 years from now, he will probably be in the top 10.  That's how the NFL works.

Did he take into consideration that only the first two years are guaranteed? Rarely does one realize the whole amount of the contract.

files58, its $15M guaranteed money.  Thats quite a bit for a guy who has never been viewed as dominant.
I think its pretty clear the giants overpaid because they had too.  There is nothing wrong with overpaying a guy. We did it last year with Manning.  Its part of the dynamics of football.  Sometimes shen you have a need, you set the market rather than follow it.  We set the market for safeties. the other owners are probably pissed and other safeties are thrilled, but its been done before and will be done again.  Had Phillips not been injured, we would not be here and maybe we would have overpaid for Dansby.  I'm fine with how all this worked out. I hope we do well in the draft.

Guaranteed over 2 years, not 15 million for 1 year.  It's certainly not a lot of money for 2 years.

No, if they cut him today, he gets $15M.  If they cut him after 2 years, he gets $15 million.  Guaranteed money is guaranteed money.  He gets it for signing his name and does not have to even appear on the roster.   That its paid to him over two years if the giants keep him on the team makes no difference.  Its money on the loss sheet.  And for a safety, that figure is obscene.  The franchise tag for a safety is $6.4 million and the transition tag is $6 million.  The franchise is the average of the 5 highest paid players in the game.  No one in the world thinks Rolle is top 5 safeties in the game.  I doubt he is top 10 (which makes up the transition tag), yet his offer makes him the highest paid.  Anyway, $15 million over two years is obscene for a safety at this level.  Its a LOT of money over two years.  I still feel it was a good decision, but lets not even attempt to argue that its not a lot to pay a safety.  If Phillips did not get injured we are not even having this discussion.  Instead we would all be calling out the club who did this for it.  But we play the cards we are dealt. We have a xxxxty secondary with a huge need to fill up the middle. We can't get both a starting mike and a safety in the draft, the draft is deeper at mike, so we overpay Rolle and deal with mike via the draft.  It was a good decision, but that does not mean that $15M over two years is not a lot to dedicate to the safety position.  Thats a fact you can't ignore.

Rolle is a really good player.  Unless it's a major injury, he's going to be on the roster for at least 2 years.  So your argument is that we gave him guaranteed money for 2 years?  It was not a lot of money over two years and that was the going rate for the best FS on the market.  Sometimes you slightly overpay to get the guy you need.  We did and it was a smart move and of little risk to the Giants.  It was a great contract for the Gmen.

Gotta love these guys making "brilliant observations" about how the Giants got fleeced and all, but not bothering to offer what the Giants should have done as a "more sensible, feasible alternative."  I guess Peter King feels we should have let CC Brown and Aaron Rouse have another shot.
