Did any of you baseball people take my rules test on the main board. Come on guys, let's see how much you all know.

For the past few years, I have put up a baseball rules quiz, trying to coincide with the beginning of baseball season. Most know I umpire High School baseball (my college days are over).
Here is my quiz for this year. Some are easy and some may require a trip to the rule book.

I'll put up the answers in a day or so, so see how you do.

1--Runner is on first and second with no outs. Batter hits a fly ball to right field and it is caught. The ball is then thrown to first base and the runner is out. The ball is then thrown to second base, does the runner have to be tagged or just tag the base

2--.man on first and second,no out.The batter hits a ground ball to the shortstop,he fields the ball, runs over to 2nd base, tags the runner(who never leaves the base)then steps on 2nd base and throws to first.whats the call?

3--One runner on first base. Batter hits the ball to outfield & makes it to second base. Original runner from first only ran to second base, even though he should have advanced to 3rd. 2 players at second base safely. If the ball thrown to 2nd bsmn, who is out

4--Catcher throws to third on a steal but, ball hits the bat of hitter still in the batters box. . Your ruling?

5--Bases loaded no outs batted ball hit runner while standing on third base. Your call??

6--Two outs bases loaded. SS positioned in the base line, ball is softly hit where he bends down and ball deflects off his foot a foot or so away. Runner from second base goes beside SS and makes contact while SS tries to get a hold of ball. play is allowed to stand as SS had a chance to make a play on the ball and muffed it?? Correct?????

7--Runners on 1st and 2nd. Batter hits a grounder to SS and the runner unintentionally interferes with the SS. The ball bounces off of the SS and rolls towards 2nd base. The 2nd baseman picks up the ball and touches 2nd base for the force. Ruling?

8--What is the ruling if the batter, while attempting to bunt, steps on home plate? Does it matter if he hits the ball or not? And what if the batter step directly behind home plate but does not touch it?

9--Bases loaded one out line drive to first. He catches it then throws to third which goes out of play, runners haven't tagged up yet, so how many score since they had to go back to their original base first before advancing on the ball out of play

10--How many runs score in this situation: bases loaded; batter walks; the last pitch bounces into "dead" territory.

11--A batter hits a dink towards the mound. He drops his bat in fair territory in front of the plate. The ball hits the ground in front of the mound and rolls back towards home and is stopped by the bat in fair territory. Is the ball in play?

True or False

#12-Pitcher goes to the mound with a multi colored glove of Brown and Red.
The umpire should order the pitcher to remove this glove

#13==3-2 on the batter. He fouls the next pitch off the catchers chest protector and it goes up in the air a few feet and the catcher catches it before it hits the ground. Is the batter out?

#14-A long fly ball to deep center field, hits the top of the wall, bounces back in, hits the fielders glove and is deflected over the wall. The umpire rules it a home run since it never hit the field of play.

#15-2 out, bases loaded and a 3-2 count on the batter. With the runners moving on the pitch, the batter takes ball 4. The runner from 2nd, touches and rounds 3rd and is then picked off by a throw from the catcher BEFORE the runner from 3rd touches home plate. The umpire scores the run.

#16-With 1 out runner at 3rd. On a suicide squeeze the batter interferes with the catcher on a play at the plate. The umpire calls dead ball declaring the batter out for interference and sending the runner back to 3rd.

#17==With the bases loaded and one out, on delivering the next pitch, the pitcher throws an illegal pitch, but the batter hits a home run. The umpire called a balk, but still allowed the Home run to stand and all the runs to score.  Is he correct??

#18--The right fielder catches a fly ball using a 1st baseman's mitt. After the catch, the umpire orders the fielder to change his glove but allows the out to stand. Correct????

#19-- While coming to the set position, the pitcher must come to a complete stop before he could throw to 1st base for an attempted pick off play??.

#20--With a runner on 3rd base, the pitcher starts his wind up. The batter shouts out ' Time' and steps out of the box. The pitcher stops his delivery. A balk should be called. ??

#21==No outs, runner on first base, moving on the pitch. He is at second base when the pitcher's pitch is high and ends up in the stands. The umpire awards the runner 3rd base???

#22--A line drive, off the pitchers glove, strikes a runner moving between 1st and 2nd, and is then caught by the 2nd baseman before it hits the ground.
The out is legal??
the runner is out??

#23-- A batter who has just been awarded 1st base on a base on balls, may be tagged out if he touches 1st base and continues a few steps beyond the bag??

#24--With a runner on 2nd, a ground ball is hit to the shortstop. He fakes to 2nd, causing the runner to go BACK to second. He then attempts to throw to 1st but his throw is wild and goes into the stands. The runner had already crossed 1st before the ball went into dead area.
The umpire puts the runners on 2nd and 3rd??

#25--Runners on 1st and second. Both steal on the next pitch and are successful. On the next pitch. batter pops up, but the umpire wasn't paying attention, calls Infield fly. The batter doesn't run but the ball is dropped and he is thrown out at first. The manager argues that the umpire caused the batter to be out by the infield fly call. The umpire lets the play stand as is, even though he made the mistake??

Extra Credit

Man on 1st. First baseman calls time and goes to talk to the pitcher. They are off the dirt portion of the mound. The pitcher slips him the ball and goes back on the mound, but does NOT come in contact with the rubber. The runner steps off first and is tagged out by the hidden ball trick. Is he out???

Extra, Extra credit

Bases loaded with 2 out in the bottom of the ninth. Home team is down 2, (5-3).  Batter hits a home run over the wall. After everyone has scored the 2nd baseman says the batter didn't touch second base and wants to appeal. Can he still appeal. Is this appeal valid.
What is the score after this
5-3
5-5
6-5
7-5

And can you explain WHY??

1. Tag the base
2. Man on first out.... 1st and 2nd 0 out.
3. The first runner.
4. Ball is live. No interference.
5. Man on third is out... bases still loaded with one out. Runner's interference.
6. Correct
7. Double play
8. Just a strike... contact has to be made in order to be called out for both.
9. 2. Error from the field is a two base error, so two guys would come in.
10. 1
11. yes
12. yes
13. no
14. no - ground rule double
15. true
16. true
17.  false
18. true
19. false
20. false - the pitcher can stop his windup at anytime.
21. fasle - one base from where the pitch started
22. the out is legal... the runner needs to go back to first.
23. true
24. fasle. Two bases from the field. Runner from 2nd scores. Batter gets 2nd base.
25. True

EC: No.... the ball is still considered dead until the pitcher goes on the rubber. Calling timeout kills doing that play.

EC2: Yes, he can appeal. Score would be 5-5. The man on first would only be considered at 3rd when the appeal happens.

And I took this without knowing anyone's answers. I copied and pasted it.
