new york hot dog carts......
« on: July 03, 2011, 05:00:27 PM »
i have never had one but in reading different food networks i keep reading about hot dogs  from cart vendors in new york with " red onion sauce"

now i found a pretty good recipe, according to the reviews, and i was wondering......if you ordered a dog from a cart vendor with "red onion sauce" on it, what other condiments would you have on the dog?

i want this dog to be as authentic as it can be , so let's have some suggestions eh....go Giants!!!!!

OK Terry, since I have never bought a hot dog from one of these vendors, my opinion is just that, my opinion.
People put anything on hot dogs, but true NYers put mustard and sauerkraut, and basically that's it. yes the vendors have these onions and they are great. I have eaten them at home as they sell them prepared in the stores.
I guess it is just personal likes or dislikes. Myself, I like mustard AND ketchup AND a dollop of horseradish sauce. I can then have some relish, (I have this jalapeno stuff that I love),and then top it off with some of said onions or sauerkraut, but I never mix them together.

Hope this helps

I try hotdogs different ways all the time.  I love the onions in sauce, though I think its more of an orange sauce than a red sauce.  I usually get the onions with ketchup.  I think kraut and mustard is the most common order, just from what I have seen.  My kids like them with just ketchup.  My favorite is a chili dog, but only from this one hotdog guy I've been buying from for years and years.

the red onion sauce turned out very good, although it did take a long time to make......it is sweet yet has a touch of heat to it

There you go, ruining another hot dog.

I grew up only getting hot dogs from a deli, that is why I said real hot dogs lovers only use mustard and kraut. But cheese on a hot dog, NEVER in NY. Sauce and onions possibly,,,, cheese NEVER.  That's the way we would know you came from the Far North

Terry, Sabrett Hot Dogs with the Sabrett red onion sauce is what most of these vendors use. I like them with mustard and the red onion sauce. Lenny is Kosher. I suspect that's why he never ate from a dog stand. Hebrew National make a good product, but you haven't lived until you eat a dirty dog. Next time you and Brent are in town we need to make a trip to the city. Try the Sabrett products.

Sorry Lenn.  Your Hebrew Nationals are not red.  More like a brown.  Here is a pic of red hot dogs.  I do not believe they come kosher.  So sadly you will probably never enjoy the taste of a real red hot dog.  And sadly for me,  my wife will rarely allow me to have red dogs because of the red dye.

One of my neighbors is the Sabrett dealer for the area.  He has a little deli and most mornings its full of hot dog trucks picking up supplies.  I love Sabretts.  Its the only dog we use.

Hey Weeze! What are the dogs you had someone buy for you last time we were in Albany? Hoffman, right?

actually , since i pride myself on giving opinions only after exhaustive research, i should mention that up rochester way their is a company called swiedel's or zwiedel's, [sic}, something like that. that make a coney [white hot} thats pretty good. not a snappy griller but acceptable.
my brother sent me a 3 pounder of grillers for xmas. they were gone in a very very short time. heck im going to albany in a couple of weeks just to stuff my suitcase with snappy grillers which are now available in the albany area according to my brother.
