Our defense
« on: December 12, 2011, 12:09:30 PM »

a win is a win and we tend to overlook the obvious, but except for JPP our defense, plainly put, just sucks.

Be it the system, Fewell, injuries or the seemingly lack of talented players, but we simply cannot keep winning because of the offense and hope to go anywhere.

Yes we won because of a blocked FG, but that is ST and not defense. When was the last time our defense made a big time stop to help win a game.

Yes we have beaten the hated Cowpukes, and all is well in the LennG household for this week, but I simply cannot keep watching these guys getting destroyed week after week.

We have ONE big time player right now, JPP. After that we have several role players, in the right system, can do very well, but after that, P-weh.

One comment on the AM media shows this AM, when asked if the Giants make the playoffs can they go anywhere, and that was answered with a resounding NO. Basically saying we have no toughness o defense, no big hitters, no force. teams will start doubling JPP and some one else will have to step up. Do we even have anyone who CAN do that.

As a Giants fan for so many years, I don't think I have ever wrote that our defense just plain sucks.
I hate to include the word NASTY, but that is part of being a winning football team.

The defense seems to go the way Tuck plays.  Tuck is the team's defensive leader and unfortunately the defense is following his lead.

I was privy to the 1966 defense in limited viewing and much later in research.

You remember the record setting defense of such losses as 72-41, 49-40, 47-28, 55-14, and 52-7 etc. on the way to allowing as a team the still long standing record of 501 points.

This is worse, and really bad because we have so many high draft choices invested in it.

This defense sucks.....period.

Our sense of urgency should be to score every time we get the ball, because we are going to need it, as we have almost every game this season.

Move over Freeman White, Clarence Childs, and Henry Carr....your replacement legacy is here.

As a Giants fan for so many years, I don't think I have ever wrote that our defense just plain sucks.

You know, I couldn't even enjoy the win over Dallas last night. The fact that they even had a chance to kick a FG in that spot already had me upset.

I know how you feel Lenn. This is the worst Defense I think we have ever had and the rule changes that benefit the Offenses makes me wonder how anyone is playing defense these days. It is definately a different way teams must play and the DCs in Houston, Baltimore, San Fancisco, Jacksonville, and other places  have figured it out are about to make a lot of money. Fewell? I think he is being left behind with the Rob Ryans and others who don't know how to play with the new rules.

What those teams above all have in common is what makes me just sick. They all have great LBs. How we ever got to a point where our LBs are among the worst in the league is just hard for me, and every other Giant fan I know, to stomach. This Defense doesn't suck. There are Pro Bowl DBs and D-lineman on the field for every game.  Wehn we pull a LB off the street (Blackburn) for the Green Bay Game and he looks head and shoulders better than anyone else we have on the field in the LB position, the weakness becomes as obvious as it will ever get. I know there have been injuries, Kiwanuka has been moved around a lot, and some of these guys are very raw and still learning, but right now - at this moment - they are hard to watch.
The Coach sees the glass as half full. The Media sees the glass as half empty. The Fans can't understand why we have a glass that is twice as big as it needs to be.

After rereading my post, i would like to amend one thing....this Defenses PERFORMACE sucks.

Management can figure out why.

Is it the the players, coaches, or philosophy (if indeed we have one).

I couldnt remember if I was watching two storied NFC East teams or Miami vs San Diego circa 1984.
But I was damn happy for the win and to see Eli get some love from CC. What a difference between him and Buck.

The reference to the 1966 defense is right and frightening all at once. Obsession you forgot Mike Ciccolella and Jerry Hillebrand at LB, Don Davis and Jim Prestel on the DL. This fan has no, zero confidence that this d can stop anyone. If Romo doesn't overthrow a wide open receiver the season would be over. WHAT THE F?

here is one thought I have been having on this defense and it is that Tuck is playing like he is in la la land and just going through the motions for whatever reason so I don't know what to expect from him now or in the future, is he spent in his career.. Osi in my opinion will be gone after this season and I hope we can get something good in the deal because right now Osi is a one trick pony and can not defend the run and if his spin move doesn't work he's out of the play. This leaves us in a position where we will most likely have to draft another DE early, that is unless the team smartens up and moves Kiwi back to DE and leaves him there which will allow us to move in another direction in the draft..

Lenn, u r on the $!

Currently as to why our D sucks; Tuck gives us little. That's a huge dropoff in Play-making, that this D an ill afford. Our DT's r not the problem. Thinkin' @ this point it's more mental with Tuck than physical. MIKE Play is abysmal. The Chase honeymoon lasted exactly one game. Never thought I'd say this, but we sorely need Herzey. Notice how Dillard is MIA? Boley hopefully gettin' healthy, is a big plus for us (which should happen).

Words fail me to accurately describe our S play. Vets that simply can't...can't Cover, can't Tackle, & can't Play.
Get Sash out there, he'll do no worse while gainin' valuable experience.

Memo to JR; Please contact AP's Agent for the purpose of immediate DC employment. I've had all I can stand of Fewell, & I can't stands no more. We win in spite of this incompetent BOOB! :boooo:
My two cents.

I see I am not alone in this type of thinking.

Look, I am not here to continually criticize the players, the DC, the schemes we run, or even how we play defense. But they are just hard to watch.

As we said, a  win is a win, but we really didn't win the game as much as the cowpukes lost it. Yes, JPP saved our hides, but if Newman takes that almost pick, in the first quarter, to the house, it is a different game. if Austin catches that easy pass the game is over. We got lucky on several accounts, but we did persevere, hang in there, when I was about to turn the TV off and go to sleep. Eli saved our ass, as he has several times this year.

But, as a very long time fan, and anyone who was around from the 80's and before, always associated the Giants with tough defense, this defense is just hard to watch. I have never seen so many guys so wide open in all my life. WOW.

Lenn and Files,

To put a finality to this defense...........

1966 Giants D  14 games....4945 yds./ 353 per game over 867 plays/ 5.7 yds. avg. per play

2011 Giants d   13 games...5091 yds./ 392 per game over 859 plays/ 5.92 yds. avg. per play

and that "66 team had Jim Katcavage, Dick Lynch, and Jimmy Patton on it...though the latter 2 were in their final seasons.

As much as I love Tom Coughlin, if we had some run of the mill QB at the helm and not Eli, I would best my last nickel we would be hearing the strains of "Goodbye Tom" coming from the home faithful.  SAD

I'm not sold on Herzy yet, I'd like to see what he does in the offseason before I put too much trust in him.  Don't get me wrong, like the player a lot, but I haven't seen anything yet to lead me to believe he's our future at mike.  I give him a lot of slack on criticism due to a strike shortened offseason learning our D, and the fact he only started 2 games; regardless, I need to see more.

Without Eli at QB and the way he is playing this year, this is a 2-win team.
