Interesting Stats
« on: January 03, 2012, 12:05:44 PM »
Plaxico and  Steve Smith combined had 736 receiving yards this season, compared to 1,536 for Cruz, more than DOUBLE the guys who went slip-sliding away. Ballard had 604 yards, Boss had only 368. Not bad tradeoffs.

Let's see if the beat writers will write an article about how wrong they were . . . again.

It really is amazing how their opinions tend to sway the same type of fans year after year.

Great stats, thanks for sharing.

Yup and those opinions get shoved in the face of anyone who will listen until proven wrong. Then, it's inappropriate to say I told you so as even a passing comment. The themes of the pre-season were, "has Eli regressed?", the lousy drafts the Giants have had and "the incompetent Jerry Reese.

Where are those opinions now? Set aside waiting for the Giants next loss. If the gripe pail of woes doesn't hold water, another one is sure to take it's place.

Actually, Derek Hagan and Bear Pascoe each had more yards than Steve Smith.  :-??

I plead guilty.

Vette and NY Sports I have ordered you guys a case of "I told you so"s ;)   Should I bill it to your eternal optimist club?    :D

Still before you guys get too gloaty and all remember last year you guys sucked me back in thinking the Giants could get into the playoffs when I had given up on them.  I am still trying to find all the pieces of my heart that was ripped to shreds during the Philly and Green Bay games 8))

I will say I was reasonably optimistic at the start of the season and thought the team had the needed pieces.  Then when the team did its annual mid season tanking I became very pessimistic because I just didn't want to go through what I went through last year (the multiple heart aches).

I will also go on to say even though the team made the playoffs this year (funny this year 9-7 buys them the division last year 10-6 bought them front row seats in the stands) I have to say it was one of the less enjoyable seasons.  Too many games I was upset, angry and discouraged.  Wasn't exactly fun to watch most of the Giants games.  Although rewatching the ones I know we win are now enjoyable and I did feel good (in the end) about the ones we won.  Plus sweeping the Cowboys, beating the Jets and ensuring the Eagles didn't make the playoffs were all good things.

Well it's on to the play offs where anything can happen.

I'd like to think of it as the "realistic" club as opposed ot the "eternal optimist club".   ;)

I think many hearts were ripped to pieces during that 8 minutes against the Eagles last year.  Maybe the Giants would have clinched that #2 seed had the DE's played DE as opposed to NT and LB.   :'(

Rich, I wasn't talking about you. But since you mentioned it.............Given the following scenarios, what action do you feel in your torn up heart (there is a county song just begging to be written in there somewhere, I think Kevin and I need to work on it) would need to be taken:

1) The Giants lose to the Falcons
2) Beat Falcons but lose in the next round
3) Win round two but lose NFC Championship
4) Win NFC Championship
5) Lose Superbowl
6) Win Superbowl

Yes Rich, I truly believe I can go to Indianapolis this year. The defense has given up an average of only 16 points in the last 3 games and has given up less each of the last 3 weeks. Nobody has commented this except one of my favorite Players, the under the radar Mathias Kiwanuka and myself. What say you!

My brother has a favorite saying whenever you talk about something he did wrong (usually be ignoring advice of his family)---   "mistakes were made"

I can't help but think that this applies to Reese and Fewell.     I think Reese goofed by not bringing in Chase Blackburn (or similar talent) when Goff went down.    I think Fewell screwed up by insisting on running an overly complicated defense.   Still despite those mistakes, both men have corrected their mistakes and the team is in the playoffs and even got themselves a home game and a division championship.

It would seem to me, based on the cupcake schedule the Falcons enjoyed, the Giants have every chance to beat them.   if the Giants win or at least play them close, I am willing to go with the same coaching team.    Although I am less than happy with Fewell.   I think Fewell is capable of being a quality DC but more often than I would like he suffers from lapses in judgment and hurts the team's defensive performances.

Gilbride's return is fine in my opinion.  KG had done a good job and I have noticed he has even dialed back the long ball (thus giving the offense more consistency)

TC seemed to have lost the team after the Saints game.  Yet TC fought on and a few heart to heart talks with his key players along with the credibility that came from his demonstration of his own toughness (hence walking the walk) he has recaptured the team and has earned himself another season.

As to what I would like that's a tough one.  At the beginning of the season I would have been happy with a single playoff win.    At this point I would still be satisfied with a single win but I will not be truly happy until the Giants get themselves into at least the championship game.   Although I understand a trip to the big easy would most likely lead to disaster (then again in 2007 I thought there was no way I could see the Giants coming out of Dallas the second time with a victory).   Vegas has the odds of the Giants winning the Super Bowl at 20-1.    I would agree with that.  Of course in 2007 I would have probably said the same thing as the team prepared to go to Tampa.   I though a win at Tampa was possible but no way they get past the Cowboys and the unbeaten Pats.

Maybe the Giants would have clinched the #2 seed had the 2008 1st round pick went for the tackle on Celek rather than the big play on the 1st Eagle TD or the 2007 1st round pick contained Vick on that last drive.  :ok:

So it would have taken the Eagles one or two more plays had Celek been tackled?  The defense was giving up yardage by the dozens each play with all the DE's out of position.  But hey, rip on Reese again but unfortunatley he built a roster deep enough to still win the East.

I still don't think this was a good season and I definitely don't think this is a great Giants team.  This was still a historically bad defense, littered with high-round picks and well-paid free agents.  This was still one of the worst offensive lines we've seen in quite a long time.  The success of this season rests on one Eli Manning.  Without Eli, this was maybe a 3 win team (in the worst division in football, even).

I'm proud as hell of Eli putting this team on his back this year, but that is the reality of what we're seeing.  I hope it continues and we can watch Eli carry this team deep into the playoffs. =D>

I don't believe even Sheridan was silly enough to put all three DE's out of position when they we shutting down the Eagles prior to the change.  Thank goodness we have Jerry Reese although I'm sure he'll be ridiculed for not reaching in the first round again.  Right?  LOL

It's not a very good team will all these injuries yet I'm very happy they found a way to still win the East.  Now, IMO, they're trying to find lightning in a bottle with the playoffs here.  Let's see what happens.
