Our GM
« on: January 16, 2012, 05:10:47 AM »
In pre-season, when all the hullaballoo was about a team that had lost Boss and Smith, I believe the guy came out and said he was happy with what he had, and if my memory serves me correctly said we still had a good shot of going all the way which I believe he then modified to getting to the Play Offs.

I thought he had lost his marbles.   Literally.

The front office deserves a lot of credit.  Letting Boss and Smith walk turned out to be great moves with their two replacements stepping up to play huge parts of this offense.  Not trading or giving into Osi's contract demands has turned out to be huge as well.  Reese and his staff have done well.

I think the front office has done well.   With the injury and salary cap issues, the team has done far better than hoped.

Signing Boothe and talking about how it was a key signing was critical.

Drafting JPP when the team had little need for a DE showed the team recognized how special JPP was

It's clear Reese was smart not to go crazy trying to keep Smith or Boss.   Both players showed they had limited value left and the teams that had signed them over payed in big ways.

Those were some of Reese's best moves

On the other hand the O-line has not been blocking like it should be.   As a result the running game is not where it should be.   As Painter has said Gilbride has done an incredible job using smoke and mirrors to craft an potent offense, considering the team is handicapped by not having a good run game.

Reese cost the team a victory or so when he waited so long to sign Chase Blackburn to replace the injured Goff.   I can't help but feel the Giants would be playing next Sunday's game in the Meadowlands had Reese signed Blackburn as soon as Goff went down.

So there were more good than bad and one needs to credit the entire organization from the front office to the special teams players for the Giants success this season.

Who's perfect? He makes a lot of great decisions or moves (or non moves) more often and I'll take him as a GM any day. Still can not believe they are in the Championship game. You almost knew this would be exciting year because of the potential, rookies, etc, but no one except Reese saw this coming.

I agree, Reese is a good GM and he should be around for a long time to come.

In spite of a certain poster around here who insists I'm a Reese hater, I've always posted to the contrary with exception to one thing....the LBs.  Reese does a fantastic job.  And yes we still need a LB.

St Marys, I vividly recall when JR made that statment, & I believed him. I had read previously how badly beaten up Boss was, & how Smitty (after our Docs performed the surgery & watching him closely for eight months or so) was declared not fit to make the Opening game. So, turning the page on those two made sense to me as well.
The total shocker to me (but not to JR apparently) was the emergence of Cruz. Now, somebody had to notice this UDFA & believe in him through his IR stint as well. Hence, Smitty is a distant memory.

Another surprise to many (not me, cause I saw him move about in Camp several times) is Ballard. Not the impact of Cruz, but still a nice complimentary weapon for Eli that certainly let use stop talkin' bout the Bossman's departure.
Known strickly as a blocker @ Ohio State. This TE has flashed soft hands & the ability to locate the seams in Zones.
Huge @ 6' - 6" 275 lbs. he sports rare athleticism & maturity as a 1st year player off last year's PS.

Whether you agree with his philosophies or not, JR is consistent. Much like TC, and the Giants' franchise in general.

To me, that's all you can ask.

Actually I ask for two more things: competitiveness, and success. And this regime has provided us with just that.

Hi Jaime, I should have added that my problem with Boss and Smith's  absence was not necessarily in letting them go, but in not seeing any direct replacements coming in.

Those of you who go to Albany would have had a bird's eye view of what was waiting in the wings.

That said, I don't think anyone could have predicted the coming of Cruz, even if Rex did get a serving if what No. 3 had to offer last pre-season.   It was clear at the time that Kevin and Smithy had suffered badly from
concussions and inury and had been given good offers to join Oakland\Philly which Reese understandably, wouldn't match.
