A Chance to Avenge Super Bowl XXXV?
« on: January 18, 2012, 12:23:59 AM »
Imagine this:

If both so-called underdogs win this weekend, the Giants would have the opportunity to avenge their loss to the Ravens in Super Bowl XXXV. That game was a true @ss-whooping put on by the Ravens, a 34-7 final, with the Giants only score coming off a Ron Dixon 97 KO return.

A trivia question: Name those integrally involved in that game who would also be involved in a re-match.

Terry,

Do not sell Baltimore short. In a league that is light on defense, the Ravens are the #3 ranked defense (#2 run defense, #4 pass defense). Offensively, the Birds are middling (#15), but Ray Rice is a dominant player, with over 2000 yards of total offense. If Ed Reed is able to go, I like their chances against the Pats.

Without doing some digging on the interwebs, Ray Lewis and Osi Umenyiora?  That was a long time ago.  These will not be the same two teams that's for sure.

Pretty sure Ray Lewis was only current player on either roster to have played in that game. There may be current coaches on one of the teams that aren't coming to my mind but I don't think so.

From a fan standpoint this is the match up I would want to see.  I was a Junior in College when this Super Bowl took place.  I honestly don't remember much of the game because of how much I drank that day....................and I am glad that I did.

If this ended up being the Super Bowl I would want to remember this one. :)

Ray Lewis is the only one I can think of.

New England does not match up well with Baltimore, so it should be interesting.

One thing that has always ground on me is that Super Bowl.  Were we better than Balt. ??  Probably not.

But between Collins 4 int and deer in the headlights look...that game swung on the Interception for
TD called back AND Lewis fumble that Sehorn would have returned for a TD in the 4th quarter.

That game should have been more of a 20-17 game than the route it evolved in to.

IF we don't beat the Niners, it doesn't matter who wins the Pats/Ravens game.  First things first.

Lewis would seem to be the only player.

Jim,
Is Armstead listed on the staff?  If not is he just a guest during training camp?

Mike Pope was around before TC but I am not sure if he was "integrally involved" in 2000 nor if was present in 2000.

Jim,

I did not think of Armstead, who is listed as a "special assistant" to the linebackers and not a full-time coach.  Mike Pope was, and still is, the Giants TE coach. There is also a HOFer who was, and still is, a major component of one of the two teams. As an aside, there is another person who had a minor role this year but who none-the-less had an accidental effect on his team's success.

Whales,

Pope returned as TE coach in 2000 and has remained ever since.

I want SOOOOOOOOO much to play the Ravens. Not because I feel we would have a better chance of winning against them than the Pats, but I SOOOOOOOOOOOO want to avenge that SB35 loss.

That was one of my most powerful Giants losses ever. Yes there have been worse losses, but that game really affected me. After that game I wanted nothing to do with the Giants, with football in general for months. it took me till the draft before I was even able to go back on line to see what was going on. I was so sure we would trounce, not just beat, the Ravens. After our complete demolition of the Vikings and showing what our offense could really do, Fassell came into this game scared and his entire game plan played out that way. Tiki run right for 2 yards, Tiki run left for 1 yard and then let Collins give the game away. To this day, I truly believe had we come out with a similar game plan against that big bad Raven's defense, we would have had them back on their heels and we win that game going away. For ME, I completely blame Fassell for that loss. But that is a story for anothr day.

I want them bad.
I hate to include the word NASTY, but that is part of being a winning football team.
