Giants' Umenyiora fined $20,000 for media no show
« on: February 01, 2012, 02:38:51 PM »
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora has been fined $20,000 by the NFL for missing a mandatory Super Bowl media session Wednesday morning.

The NFL announced the fine less than two hours after the Giants wrapped up their 45-minute session.
Umenyiora was supposed to be sitting at a riser answering questions, but he never showed up.
The rest of the Giants players and coaches attended the session, four days before the NFL title game between the Giants and the New England Patriots.

Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon said Umenyiora was in meetings and will practice. He did not give a reason for Umenyiora's absence from the media session.

This was an odd situation.   It might also be a record for the NFL issuing a fine.

Yeah, a bit excessive.

At the end of the day, promoting the NFL on its biggest stage to all who will look and listen is what it takes most seriously........if simply not showing up was an exceptable practice media day would evolve into an event full of backups.

Upon reading this I am shocked the Giants were not fined too.....

It was probably worth it to him to dodge 45 minutes of answering the same questions about his contract dispute and blah blah ...   I'm sure Eli would drop half a million to not have to talk about the Elite thing.    Media day is pretty redundant.   I know they are professionals and should be happy to be there but man it seems more a pain in the A$$ than anything.

Sorry Osi, I don't believe you misunderstood it.

He always shows up for Thursday or Friday talks with the media. The Wednesday requirement during the Superbowl was missed by him.

He's doing what he has done all year. The rules have changed for the Superbowl. Hard to understand how he missed though, when no one else missed it.

Enough said.

The Coach sees the glass as half full. The Media sees the glass as half empty. The Fans can't understand why we have a glass that is twice as big as it needs to be.

Whole incident seems innocuous and uneventful and if it were anyone else it would be accepted as such.  But Osi is a condemned man.

Sorry Osi, I don't believe you misunderstood it.

I've never been a big fan of Osi off the field, while loving his play on the field, but I am inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt on this.  Why would a guy who wants a contract, either from the Giants or someone else, intentionally not take the opportunity to create a good impression on a national stage?  Knowing that if he didn't show up it would become exactly what it has become.  He screwed up but I hope JR finds a way to slip him the $20G under the door or something.
I'd rather be a disappointed optimist than a vindicated pessimist

We don't need this distraction.   Given the size of the fine better, you believe he will be at t next one and the next....
