MUST on of these two be the "greatest Giant Coach?"  How 'bout some consideration of Steve Owen & Jim Lee Howell?

jimv, the majority of fans and media types have barely heard of Owen and Howell. As much as you and I may have appreciated those guys and loved watching the pre-merger, pre- Super Bowl Giants, the bases for comparison have become quite different since.

If the Giants win tomorrow, it will become pick'em between Tuna and Tom. For many, it is hard not to lionize Big Bill for leading the Giants out of the darkness of a decade and a half of dispair. Others may put TC on a well-deserved equal footing as, at least to some extent, an admission of their recent wrong-headed rashness.

But unlike Tuna who got out before he had to suffer any of the same slings and arrows, Tom Coughlin will retire as a Giant. I hope that wont be for awhile.

Cheers!

Who's the greatest Giants Coach? Imagine that? Wasn't he getting fired in December?

Yeah, it makes me wonder.  Had JPP hand not connected with the Dallas punt, TC very well could have been fired and that would have been the end of a very good career and his career as a coach.   Now thanks to that well place block TC was able to stage a comeback for the ages and is being talked about as one of the great coaches.   So it makes me wonder were their other coaches who's potential for greatness snuffed out by the fickle hand of fate.

Same could be said for Parcells if Scott Norwood had not missed wide right.  No, he wouldn't have been fired but he wouldn't have been looked at the same way with 1 championship instead of two.

Or as someone famous once said "events, dear boy, events".

The Giants win tomorrow night and Coughlin rightly joins Parcells in a 'contest' for best modern-era Football Giants coach.

Was Parcells almost let go after the 1983 season or am I making that up?

No, you are correct, Parcells highlighted his problems in the 86 winning America's Game.

I understand what you're saying, Painter.  But, St Mary's said it right.  He said grestest of the "modern-era."  That's what we're really talking about.  When you say just "greatest," you open it up to the entire history of the team.

I know I'm biased but, if the team seals the deal tomorrow, I'd put TC over Parcells for greatest SB era HC.

Salary cap, free agency, 24-7 media coverage. Tuna didn't have to deal with any of the stuff TC has had to.

That said, Owen, Howell, Parcells, and Coughlin all get my vote for the faces on the Mount Rushmore of Giants' Head Coaches.

Which HC got the most heat from the fans and the press? I would guess Ray H. I'm not allowed to even mention that name here or the Tru Blue Fan is libel to take my head off with his sword in one swipe.

Vette, considering the amount of success he's had here, I think TC has gotten the most heat. He's been on the media "hot seat" every season except 2008.

Tuna had BB and Tom has/had a revolving door at DC that almost ruined the Big Blue Wrecking Crew name for the defense. At the same time, Tom has a better offense than Tune had. I think it is a close call that cannot be made until Tom wins his second one...

GO GIANTS!
