Anyone who read the thread had to realize it was just being lighthearted. The trouble with twitter is that a title can be re-tweeted and viewed by thousands, especially if a player or Sportswriter puts it out. Then again, there is no such thing as bad publicity.

I don't use or regard Twitter. I think it is stupid.  Twitter doesn't enter into my thought process.

Twitter gives this group reach well beyond the few hundred members of BBH.  Our Twitter presence also helps to bring in new membership.  So Twitter may not personally like Twitter, I hope you appreciate that it is an invaluable asset to BBH.

Apologies
« Reply #17 on: February 12, 2012, 10:20:12 AM »
Here is how twitter works. Let's say we have 1600 twitter followers. Every new thread that is started on the football forum then is posted with the title of the thread on that person's twitter feed page. When they click on it, it brings them to this site and to the thread.

Some click on it and some don't based on their interest.

There are several players and sportswriters who follow us on twitter.

If someone re-tweets, then it goes out to all of their followers. As an example, Bonnie Bernstein has over 46 thousand twitter followers. Among them, likely all the players and all the other sportswriters. Anita Marks has over 10 thousand.

So you see, one thread could potentially pass the eyes of thousands of football fans.

That's the point Rich and I were trying to make. Just keep this in mind when you choose the layout of the title of your thread. Without even reading the thread, judgment can be made about the forum.

That's all. Just an FYI.
The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.

I appreciate what you are saying, but I have a problem with forumites being "made" to censor our threads and comments to cater to Twitter and the impulsive nature of presumptuous folks who don't or can't read a thread and learn its genuine intent.  It makes our forum more rigid than it should be.  We should not have to walk on eggshells to be sensitive to clumsy technology. The machine is broken, not the forum...for now anyway. At the very least, Twitter users should understand that not everything is literal.  Hopefully in the future the technology will be improved upon.

THANK you. Twitter followers should actually click the link before they comment on it. I know when I see something ridiculous on twitter I always click the link. If they had a half a brain they would know it was sarcasm.

Is a title only posted to Twitter when a thread is newly generated?  What if someone posted a thread with the title "Victor Cruz is a bum!!!" right after Game 1 and that thread was bumped right after his Superbowl TD?

Twitter gives instant access to any breaking news information. Literally seconds after it happens. For example, a player gets injured on the field and the information concerning it, is instantly available.

There is another aspect to consider. Did you ever see a thread topic or post response here become the topic of an article in a major publication? Do you think that's a coincidence? It's not. All the sportswriters browse these forums looking for ideas and material. I'm not talking twitter here.

You don't have to walk on eggshells. Just be aware of it.

Only the original posting of the thread comes up. Here is an example:

You don't have to walk on eggshells. Just be aware of it.

Put simply, the "parody thread" has been a staple as old as internet forums themselves.  It should not be put to death in the wake of Twitter.  I don't care for clumsy disclaimers e.g. "Fire Coughlin (Humor)" either as I find they detract from the impact of the jest.

I'll shut up now.  Apologies for beating the horse.

Social media! Talk about "too much information". What have we wrought? And some still talk about privacy rights?  Actually, I don't know what was said in that thread, and I suddenly realize that I feel good about it, not that I would have thought it inappropriate.

Cheers!

No sweat Nets.  Hey, we've all posted something that we wish we hadn't and we've all posted things that in our mind was very clear as far as intent, but not so clear to others.  As for Twitter, Rich is right, it's a vast fountain of information.  You just have to learn how to navigate the icebergs.
