Movies about Dads
« on: June 18, 2012, 12:41:11 PM »
Had an article in Yesterdays Newsday looking for the top movies about Dads, Fathers etc.

Started me thinking

For me the best Father type movie ever was 'To Kill a Mockingbird). Gregory Peck was the ultimate Dad

After that just my own list, in no particular order
Life with Father
Kramer vs Kramer
Mr Mom
The Lion King
Finding Nemo
How about 3 Men and a Baby
Sound of Music
Houseboat
Father of the Bride
I'm sure there are ton's of others.

I did leave out most of the movies that made Dads look like some lost person and usually made him out to be silly and stupid. Funny maybe, but not my idea of a good portray of Dads.

Oh, in the article it also cited 'Shane' as a great father/son movie. I really never thought about it in that light, but it was a great movie for the relationship between a very young Brandon DeWilde and his dad Van Heflin.

And, since I brought Shane up, we know he shot and when the movie ended, was Shane going to die??> I still just do not see that as he rides away.

I hate to include the word NASTY, but that is part of being a winning football team.

Intersting topic, Lenny.  Surely, no one could disagree with your placing "To Kill a Mocking Bird" at the top of the list.  I would go with "Father of the Bride" (Tracy) as # 2.  Some others that come to mind:
"Friendly Persuasion"
"The Yearling"
"Trouble Along the Way"
"Cinderella Man"
"Chitty Chitty Bang Bang"
"Ransom" (both versions)
"You Can't Take It with You" (Grandfather, actually)
"Yours, Mine and Ours" (Fonda version)
"The Proud Rebel"

Your reference to the end of "Shane" is somewhat obtruse.  I'll have to check it.

I don't know if many would consider it a dad movie but to me it is the ultimate dad movie.   Field of Dreams

Ray Kinsella's relationship/non-relationship with John sets the theme for the whole story.  I love that movie. A real male tear jerker.

Good Will Hunting, Robin Williams as the 'father figure', Damon recounting the 'wrench' hiding he got from his foster father.

Shane sustained a gunshot wound and rode off as he died on his horse. He rides through a graveyard. That's what some people say. Others say he didn't. It wasn't clear in the movie but the possibility existed. In the book, it's assumed he lived.
