"Back to gasoline, prices were back up over $3.00 this weekend in Alabama."

Hurricane Debby.

The good side of that price increase--if it's possible to consider that--is that it sends two signals.  First, to consumers, "don't consume as much, a hurricane is on its way."  Second, to distributors/refiners, "sell more of it to people in Alabama, it's needed there."
"17-14 fellas.  One touchdown and we are world champions.  Believe it and it will happen!  17-14 is the final.  Let's go!"  Michael Strahan, with 2:39 remaining in SB42.

Mighty, I'm against any additional taxes ( I feel we need to reprioritize the income we have). However, I support greatly your goal to fund and research alternate energy.  The problem is, California being the first state to tax green house emmossions on a massive scale is using the money for general funds to balance the budget.  It put state jobs at a blatant disadvantage against other stTes and countries, ultimately costing jobs.
Finally, some thought regarding greenhouse gas, please feel free for any to cheeck my facts to verify
During the last 100 years global temperatures have risen 1 degree.
The last twenty years tides have risen  a tenth of an inch in some areas.
Les than 1% of ice caps are studied, some receed, some grow.
Carbon supposedly keeps in hotI temperatures, yet it doesn't keep out the suns  heat? Anyway, carbon. Makes up about .25% percent of the atmosphere, oxygen 21% aastmajority of the atmosphere. Yet we all fret this .25 is drowning  polar be
Most of what we hear Is media, not the scientists.
My opinion is that billions will be made off green house taxes footed by the middle class, with a small return on our sweat.

I meant carbon dioxide, not carbon in my previous post.

You don't really believe that, do you, jerseyguy? Wouldn't it be nice if an American politician, or anyone in this country could influence the price of fuel as you apparently imagine he could. But it just aint so.

Normally, we would expect the price of gasoline to increase as the Summer driving season increases demand. And earlier in the year, the economy finally seemed to be gaining positive momentum following the 2008-10 recession which augured an increase in energy demand at a time when supply was contracted by the Libyan revolution and sanctions against Iran. But now a harsh economic reality has set in. Even beyond the Euro monetary crisis posed by Greece, the Debt burden faced by Spain, Portugal, Ireland, et al, all of Europe is sliding back into recession and energy demand with it. As with all commodities, crude prices can experience swings no less pronounced than those of supply and demand.  We don't have to look for a grassy knoll to understand that.

Cheers!

unfortunately thats exactly what I believe, beware of things that suddenly start to get better just before election...

Jersey, google fracking in North Dakota or Texas, or shale oil. You will see where there is a domestic surge of supply, despite sanctions on Iran.

Greg, while I appreciate your response, I fear that if we expand this discussion to Global Warming or Climate Change, this topic will explode into something that wasn't intended. Perhaps we can discuss it on the Front Porch.

Crude oil prices are more than just tied to energy. It's used in the production of many products. Plastics especially.

The futures market hedging by Gold miners, along with central banks selling kept the price of gold low for many years. As miners reduced their hedge positions over years, the market adjusted.

Those long positions were bound to get crushed as the market drove up the prices artificially for years.

Not for nothing, but when Oil was $35 a barrel, this economy soared.

Alternative and reusable energy is not just the future it's happening now. The dependence on Oil is being reduced every day. With current economic conditions and growth stagnant or in recession, along with the shift to other means, the days of long positions in Oil is coming to an end. Short positions will eventually move the price back down.

In the end, the system works.

Good call moving it to the front porch Bama. There are so many smart and varied people here, I would find it interesting to see the views here on global warming. Not to be right or wrong, just to exchange information and ideas. I think we all have the same goal of cheaper energy and a healthy environment.

I disagreed with your opinion but I didn't use sarcasm like you did to me. I'm sorry you felt the need to ridicule but so be it, I didn't know I had to clear my opinions through you before posting, sorry...

I am deleting that post as you are right, it was inappropriate and uncalled for. He simply could have said that he just disagreed. Thank you JerseyGuy for maintaining your composure. A good example of how one should handle themselves in a situation like this, instead of going over the deep end.

I won't discuss the entirety of the global warming etc, etc. What I do know is that the temperature of the entire planet is warmer. How do I know this. I have been fortunate enough to have visited Alaska twice on cruises. We have been to the same glacier, Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, and taken the same picture from just about the same spot of the glacier. The difference between the two photos' is so remarkable, it looks as it it may have been retouched. There are so many rocks are where you only saw ice, the size of the glacier, still emmense, is so far smaller it is incredible.
The same is being said for many glaciers all over the world. In Glacier National Park in the USA, they are predicting that in 10-15 years from NOW, there may not be many glaciers to even view, that they are receding at such an alarming rate.

Now this may be scientific hooey to you, but I have seen things like this with my own eyes. The way China is spewing contaminants into the air on a daily basis, what those scientists predicted may well be on the low side. Believe it or not, but facts are facts.
Remember they once thought the world was flat, and anyone who disagreed with that was thought to be a fool, but turns out a few of them were right.
I hate to include the word NASTY, but that is part of being a winning football team.

$2.29 :what:   I'm driving to TX for my gas, that's a lot cheaper than the $3.17 I am paying here in NJ

I payed that in Jersey City this weekend and I was ecstatic - just four hours north I'm paying much more than that!

Lenn,
I was on the same cruise and have a large blown up phot of my girlfriend and I in at kiss as the falls from the glacier splashed at our feet. I loved thr fjords, very beautiful.
Theres a difference between polluting the air and global warming. The smog is far better in Los Angeles than it was twenty years ago. We do have a responsability to be a caretaker for the environment. However, it's easy to research U.S data on global temperatures over the last 100 years showing a one degree differeance. The most souther glaciers will melt the most, while those north will grow more. Only 1 % of glaciers are studied. Your own observations are compelling, but there is so much more to sample.
I understand perfectly we don't have to agree on global warming. But surely we can both agree on the beauty of the the glaciers. Next time I visit mendenhall, I will keep you in mind as we pose for a picture with grey in our hair that wasn't in the last one.
