But at that particular point the Grey was winning.

Battle strategies have changed so much since the Civil War. Their plans of battle then, are so archaic. Can you imagine a battle where two sides just go out into the open, stand side by and shoot at each other?? The carnage was so immense, but that was how it was done in that time.
And again, Pickett's Charge would have worked had certain other factors gone the way of the Grey.

But that Charge did basically end any chance the south had of winning the war. Lee's Army was basically decimated and he never fully recovered the momentum he had going into Gettysburg.
I hate to include the word NASTY, but that is part of being a winning football team.

Richard Lionheart and Saladin fought some kick-ass battles back in the 12th century. They say these are the two most brilliant generals of the entire medieval period. Plus they had nothing but respect for each other.

From what I understand Len there was a purpose behind those lines and massed vollies.   The thing was the weapons they were using were pretty inaccurate.   So the idea of having an entire line fire off at once was akin to a shot gun blast.  With so many rounds going off some of hem were bound to hit their mark.   Plus with the delays in reloading there was a high risk of being over run.  So by working together they were able to keep the enemy from over running their position and able to have some effect from each vollie.

Hannibal anyone? (not the cannibal of "Silence of the Lambs"!)

Guiseppe Garibaldi, whom I recently read about in a book , was a fascinating character to say the least.  There are statues of him in three different continents, and he is considered one of the founding fathers of modern-day Italy.
