Jabril Peppers - certified man crush
« on: April 21, 2017, 10:23:17 AM »
He's being talked about a little bit in another thread.... but this article is a must read.

One caveat was a poster said he wasnt a good open field tackler...

Quote
"He's going to play man-to-man on No. 5, and No. 5 is going to crack the Mike, and he's going to not only get to the back, he's going to smash him," Brown said. "He's the best open-field tackler I've ever seen in my life."

He's a great open field tackler.  The poster who said that has not watched enough Michigan football.  He loves contact.  I've said it before, but Peppers will be a Pro Bowl player.  He has the "it" factor the same way Tyrann Mathieu has it when so many folks doubted him and said he'd be marginal in the NFL because of his size and because of his speed, yet all of them forgot his shiftiness and knack for finding the ball.

Off the field issues, passion for the game and overall character concerns played a substantial part of his fall. Of course, size concerns also segwayed  into the durability issue that we've seen from the former honey badger.

The dude is talented...when he's on the field.

With his style of contact, can he hold up as a Box Safety? Maybe he's better off as a FS and a return man.

Q and A from Reese

Q: What is the challenge in evaluating players that are multi-dimensional? Guys like Jabrill Peppers and Christian McCaffery.

A: Well, it is not the challenge, I think that when you get a player that has a skillset like McCaffery and maybe Peppers, these guys do a lot of different things for their team and you can save yourself a roster spot more than anything else. If you get a guy like that, then maybe you don’t have to go out and get a return specialist or…obviously both those guys would be tremendous on special teams, so they can do a lot of things. But to their defense a little bit, I think they get hurt a little bit because they play so many different positions and people say, ‘Well, what does this guy do?’ I think that maybe devalues them a little bit. But we like guys with a lot of versatility and those are two good players.

Shifting to Peppers, I would be all for him if Collins wasn't around.

AP44, I am guilty as charged. I was the poster that said he's not a good tackler in space. I appreciate that you readily admit "the man crush".

When this draft period started, I admit that I didn't know anything about Jabril. Never saw him play and took the opportunity to watch 4 or 5 games focusing on him. First, I can understand your appreciation of him and is an excellent college player. He's also in a system that takes advantage of his attributes and has been a good asset to his team. Sounds like a great kid and his coaches have great things to say about him. I had an open mind when I watched the videos. And was looking where he was going to play in the NFL. I had heard that one of the positions was LB, I can understand when he's close to the LOS and he shoots the gaps on running plays it can be spectacular. But, considering his size, I would not recommend it. I don't pay much attention to the idea of him playing offense. He's played CB but I believe you readily admit that he hasn't played deep S at all. What I did see, IMO, he doesn't seem to have much experience with his cover and ball skills. I did see him whiff on attempted tackles in space farther from the LOS. In the video that was the first of him tackling the RB behind the LOS he said that he gave up a TD pass on the very next play. So, the player I saw would more than likely have to play S, unless his pro team is going to try to emulate his time at Michigan. I didn't see enough evidence that he would be worthy of a number one.

He is not a ride down tackler but a guy who comes up hard, makes forceful contact to stop momentum while wrapping up and driving carrier to the ground.  On day 1 he can return kicks and punts and be very good.  He'll play a Troy Polamalu type safety role IMHO.  Think Steelers amd Patriots will want him.

As I mentioned in my thread I like this kid's abilities and attitude so much that one of my concerns on day one is if Dallas who needs DBs gets him!
