Mike Lombardi talked about how there are only 12 first-round picks in this draft

Randy Mueller said that the talent drops off quickly on day three and that many day three picks will be no better than undrafted rookie free agents.

Those two issues will greatly impact how teams address this year's draft.

For example-  the 11th pick of the Vikings has good value, the 23rd pick, not so much

Late round picks will have less value in trades making it more difficult to engineer trades

Quote from: T200 on Today at 08:14:57 AMRich,

Can you kindly answer my questions first?  ;)

From my perspective, your question seems to be based on a false or hyperbolic premise.  That makes it difficult for me to answer.  Is DJ seeing ghosts because of NYG's failure to protect?  It appears so.  Would an elite WR change that?  It's hard to say; I haven't talked to DJ (the team does have a sports psychologist, which would be helpful.   Will DJ stay healthy with an elite WR? Again, hard to say

As @AZGiantFan brought up with the claims of many of DJ's critics that he needs perfect conditions (when DJ hasn't even had NFL normal), it's tough to discuss a player when the criticism is often more hyperbolic than reasoned.  Oddly enough, the more myself and others try to be fair in our assessment of DJ, it seems to push the criticism of Jones to even greater levels.

Quote from: T200 on Today at 08:10:06 AMIf he had a "healthy, elite receiver", would he still bird dog him and telegraph where he's going with the ball?

Would he still look for checkdowns when the pressure comes instead of giving his elite receiver an opportunity to catch a contested ball?

Will he still wait until his elite receiver has at least five yards of separation before going deep?

Would he still hear footsteps when he has a clean pocket?

Would he look downfield when the play breaks down to find any open receivers?

Those are my issues with Jones and why I feel we need to move on from him.

Tim,

How did you determine the faults you claim DJ has?

Quote from: andrew_nyGiants on April 22, 2024, 06:32:50 PMI'm seeing some reports that assert Philly tampering to get Saquon and may be looking at forfeiture of a draft pick?

A) does anyone know if it's true?

And

B) would we not be the recipient of the pick in question because if they tampered it would have to be while he was still under contract?

What say you?

There were reports and supposedly the NFL investigated.  It appears nothing came of it.

Quote from: londonblue on April 22, 2024, 03:38:08 PMThe media has a tendency to be wise after the event. At the time they said lots of nice things and were high on him. There were caveats about size, low level of competition and takes too many risks but they were not given a lot of weight.

These were typical write-ups:

https://bleacherreport.com/zach-wilson-scouting-report

https://www.nfldraftbuzz.com/Player/Zach-Wilson-QB-BY

https://www.profootballnetwork.com/zach-wilson-nfl-draft-player-profile-byu-quarterback/

On a quick search I only found one significant naysayer rating him as a third round three year project. Most of the big name NFL Network & ESPN guys drank the kool-aid, downplaying any concerns. Brugler, Kiper, McShay all had him top ten rated and mainly QB2 or 3 and felt the Jets hit a home run taking him.

The lesson? QBs get talked up every year and drafted high. They do not always deserve it. Even if they have the talent a lot can still go wrong. Drafting a guy you "love" is no predictor of success.

Neil,

Here is a long list of graders of the Jets pick.  There were quite a few that had reservations about the young man's future

Adam Schefter
@AdamSchefter
The 2021 QB draft class:

🏈No. 1 Trevor Lawrence: Jaguars
🏈No. 2 Zach Wilson: Jets ➡️ traded to Broncos
🏈No. 3 Trey Lance: 49ers ➡️ traded to Cowboys
🏈No. 11 Justin Fields: Bears ➡️ traded to Steelers
🏈No. 15 Mac Jones: Patriots ➡️ traded to Jaguars

Quote from: londonblue on April 22, 2024, 03:06:09 PMA bit less than New England got for Jones and Chicago got for Fields. If you get it wrong at QB (particularly if you give up assets to trade up for one) then you pay a severe price.

Given that the hit rate in R1 is c. 50% on QB and certainly no better when trading up for one this is the nightmare scenario that we could face this year. Is the worst case outcome worse than more Jones? That is the opinion divider!

No matter what Schoen does/does not do we will need a lot of luck on our side for once to get a good outcome.

Considering the terrible support structure QBs had with the Jets, the deck was stacked against them when they drafted a QB.  That said, I did some digging.  Apparently, the Jets were somewhat of a minority in terms of their love for Zach Wilson.  I think one could say Zach Wilson was the peak "he has arm talent" prospect (while ignoring all the other aspects of QBing).

Not the best return

Denver will send New York a sixth-round pick, No. 203, in exchange for Wilson and a seventh-round pick, No. 256. The Jets will also pay some of Wilson's salary. He's due to make $5.5 million in 2024.

Quote from: londonblue on April 22, 2024, 02:07:50 PMWilliam Joseph shocked me as I was just starting in my draft interest and he was one of my "no way" guys. The least surprising was Saquon as Gettleman might as well have had his name tattooed on his forehead he made it so obvious what he was doing. I was a big fan of AT so I was delighted when we took him.

The funny thing is I remember people being okay with Joseph but they were not happy with Osi in round 2.

Quote from: Jclayton92 on April 22, 2024, 02:34:49 PMIt doesn't matter if Tyreek hill and Travis kelce joined the Giants, Jones is not leading the league in passing. To think so is extremely unrealistic given his production to this point.

That's where we differ.   I consider that Daniel Jones has never had an opportunity to work with a healthy, elite receiver.  So, I consider it illogical to assume I know how that would play out if it did happen.

Cheers!

The odd part is that, in theory, Penix would have laid out his case when he was meeting with the teams.

Found this on social media:

Quote"I'm a product of Dade City, FL. Population 7,600. No Trader Joe's, no Whole Foods. No steak houses or country clubs. No personal QB coach, no strength coach, no state-of-the-art training equipment. Nothing about Dade City is luxurious...."

This is an interesting inclusion/phrasing after last week's interview with Caleb Williams where he talked about having his own apartment, nutritionist, itemized plan to reach the NFL while he was in high school.

Funny, I assumed his PR firm/draft team wrote the letter for him
