Which Is More Important? Weapons Or Linemen?

                    Linemen

Quote from: kingm56 on February 22, 2024, 05:15:42 PMMy sincere apologies, Jim; I clearly remember your thoughts on the matter and wholeheartedly agree. I also agree that not trading away players with value was equally absurd.  Again, my apologies for being so imprecise.
Thank You. Before salary caps and free agency, it was hard to accept these trades which in some cases were favorite players. Today's game is so different. Teams have less than 4 seasons to determine if they should try to extend a player to somewhat control his salary or chance them getting an astronomical contract via free agency. I don't want to lose McKinney or Barkley, but now that other teams can bid and drive up their price, the Giants probably won't want or be able to match.

Tanking means purposely losing. Trading players, when there's a good chance they'd lose them after the season anyway, to get some value in a lost season is not tanking. It also gives late round draft picks and undrafted free agents the chance to gain experience and show if they're worth bringing back the next season. You never know who will come off the bench and win a game. McKinney played every down last year, but look what Dane Belton did vs Philly that last game.

Didn't the Rangers sell off a few years ago when they sent out the letter? They didn't tank. The Yankees dumped players during losing seasons. While you could say they might've given up on the season, they weren't trying to lose.

Quote from: MightyGiants on February 22, 2024, 03:15:56 PMLet me get this straight

4 years ago, the Giants traded away a third and a fifth-round draft choice to acquire LW

4 years later, the Giants traded away LW for a 2nd round pick and a 5th round (2025) pick

So please explain to me exactly how terrible the original LW trade was.  They received the services of a good DT for 4 years, and they netted the value of 2nd rd pick against a third rd pick for the privilege.

 :-??
It was terrible because they could've lost him for nothing. They got him to finish a losing season, then with no bargaining power, had to pay him extremely high salaries to keep him. He was far from the last piece of the puzzle to get them deep into the playoffs. He probably would've been free for them to go after when that season ended. They got a return for him last year, but overall, it was a tremendous gamble for a team that needed so many upgrades back then.

Quote from: Giant Jim on February 22, 2024, 01:32:34 PMNot trading players that will be free (UFA) at the end of the season when the team has a losing record at the deadline makes about as much sense as trading draft picks away at the deadline for a DT/DE that's going to be a UFA at the end of that season. The more changes they make, the more things remain the same.
Quote from: kingm56 on February 22, 2024, 03:08:41 PMThe irony is, a significant portion of fans on this site thought the LW trade was a good move, as well as retaining Barkley until the Giants were officially eliminated. In short, there seems to be a lot of hindsight lately.  Reflection is great; however, it seems unfair for the same fan who defended retaining Barkley/trading for LW to now criticized the franchise and those transactions...
My post referring to the first Leonard Williams trade is not in hindsight. I never agreed with it. I was in shock when they made the trade to obtain him. They were in position to be sellers at that time, certainly not buyers for a rental player. The contracts he signed with the Giants were for the team to save face. I don't appreciate your implication that I changed my feelings about the situation after the fact. I never posted I was in favor of the first Williams trade or keeping Barkley & McKinney at the last deadline knowing they would be UFA's after the 2nd half of the season.

He's right about building from the bottom, the feet. On the offensive side, the feet is the offensive line. The head are the WR's & non-blocking TE's. RB's are the top of the head. But the QB is the core. It's the hardest, most expensive and most important position. If a team starts with a QB, it needs to protect him, even if it means waiting to build the defense.

The other thing teams need to do is keep top players from reaching free agency. Whether you like a player like McKinney or not, what will it cost to replace him? With all the needs around the team, why waste a draft pick for a safety when they could've extended him last year for less than he'll get now as a free agent? 4 years and done. Losing Pugh and Richburg hurt badly back then. High draft picks that may not have been pro bowlers, but they were played so much better than anyone else they brought in until Thomas.

The Giants took a major step back from rebuilding when they drafted Barkley, the top of the head and overpaid for free agent OL. Mara thought Barkley was all Manning needed. What phase of the rebuild are they at right now? At least 3 OL needed and a gigantic question mark at QB, the foot and the main part of the body.

Quote from: brownelvis54 on February 06, 2024, 06:11:12 PMI was reading somewhere that that is the Green bay way. Draft a QB when you can a good one regardless if you need one. Dont wait until you HAVE to draft one. I want to say 49ers used to do that too.
At the time he was drafted, Parcells knew nothing about Simms and he was unreliable. Scott Brunner was the starter most of the last 3 or 4 years and Parcells knew he wasn't the answer.

The video starts by saying Hostetler was drafted in 1984 when the Giants already had solid and sturdy Phil Simms. At the time of the '84 draft, Phil Simms had missed close to half of his games due to injury. He missed the entire '82 season and most of '83.

Is it possible Gettleman was under orders to not miss out on Barkley? Mara was trying to win with Manning and not looking to rebuild at that point.

Quote from: MightyGiants on January 26, 2024, 09:00:54 PMIn fairness, these comments were at the end of his podcast and were not advertised.  Raanan was addressing the possibility of Belichick coming to the Giants as a coach.  He said people have come to him with the reports that Belichick is not happy with the way the Giants run now.  Raanan suggested it had to do with the family being involved in running the team, a break from how things were run when he was with NYG and Wellington was in charge
When Belichick was with the Giants, George Young ran the team and Wellington was not involved, abiding by the agreement made with nephew Tim and Pete Rozelle. It's doubtful John would step back and allow anyone the freedom Young had.

If they bring Belichick in, they should get rid of Schoen and DaBoll. They'd be in a situation where they'd be looking over their shoulders after every debatable decision or loss. Belichick would be viewed as a coach-in-waiting, everyone knows he wants to coach again and would probably want full control when he slides over to be head coach. They did this the last time the team was in total chaos when they hired the most successful head coach from the WFL, John McVay, to a made up job title, only to succeed Bill Arnsbarger in the middle of his first season here. Either Schoen and DaBoll go or continue to run the team as they see fit and try to stabilize this team that has been so poorly run for so many years. Owners need to support their management or find new they believe in, not undermine it.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Where Schoen went wrong

Campbell and Waller were Gettleman type moves. As soon as Schoen had money to spend, he went right for skill players while fielding an unknown offensive line with no depth. The Barkley contract only kept him here for 1 year and now it's off the books. He did good with Jones, no one knew he would be hurt and possibly not ready to start next season. If Jones isn't the answer, most of his contract is gone after '24.

Finding the right guy is most important. Once you have the right guy, stick with him. Sticking with the wrong guy that can't handle the job is worse than getting rid of him. Simple. Is he saying the Jets would've grown and gotten better if they kept Herman Edwards as head coach? The Giants, had they kept McAdoo? Seems like we were seeing the middle of the interview, so it's out of context.
