He's average.  And the average of the votes in the poll indicates he is average.  He is perfectly average.  I believe you can put lipstick on him in the form of WRs and protection and he will look prettier.  As pretty as Jim Everett.  Will that be enough to win a SB?  It could be enough for a single run if many things come together.  It will be a herculean effort on the part of coaches and front office to bring together enough of the right pieces at the right time but it can be done and much stranger things have happened in recent Giants history.

I'm not arguing in favor of Daniel Jones but I also don't believe we are doomed to some kind of playoff purgatory.  The way things look, the Giants are keeping Jones and I have no say in anything so this might be nothing but a cope on my part, but I like Schoen enough and Daboll quite a bit to believe they'll keep the Giants in contention long enough where the right moment might cross our path.  Keeping fingers crossed.

All this talk of signing someone else's spent veteran LB is giving me yucky JR vibes. Are we really back to the LB no importante mantra?  After 25 years maybe it's just become tradition to ignore the position while being slowly bled on sundays by backs and tight ends and wishing we had someone tough, smart and athletic enough to do something about it.

He's been pretty good so far. I'm not sure he's the next sack master to come into the NFL just yet but he has the talent for it.  I think he'll be a good one for years to come.

Kind of wish people would quit interviewing him though. As much as people have raved about his energy and charisma, I see a guy who talks loud, often and about nothing.  I don't think his charm is gonna create as many post football opportunities as he he might think.  He should focus on football and I'm sure he's doing just that.

Lack of creativity is a side effect of being overly anodyne.  It's in the film industry; why would commercials be any different.

We didn't need a leak to know that we were targeting Jeremy Shockey, Tyrone Wheatley (and he was 17th), Jon Ogden, Eli Manning, Ron Dayne.  Same goes for Smith.  There is enough draft buzz at the top of any draft to intuit what your favorite team, whom you'd like to think you are intimately familiar with, is going to pick.  This is, of course, only reasonably possible when you are drafting near the top.  When you are dealing with, say, 7 teams and perhaps 10 or so possible players to slot into those positions, you can use the publicized information about needs, relationships within the organizations to the prospects, understanding of player match to team scheme to eliminate who is and isnt likely to be picked in front of your team's pick.  It isn't science but it is easier to manage when the number of possibilities are reduced.

This does not need to be stated.  Every fan who engages in the draft process understands and does this mental exercise instinctively.  Think the Philadelphia Eagles can't do the same with a much deeper pool of information?

Yeah the draft is a crapshoot and you never know who anyone will pick but sometimes you kind of do.

We had 3 to 4 starting caliber DEs through JR's tenure yet we never generated more sacks or pressures than any other good pass rushing team that didnt have such abundance of pass rushers.  Of course when you're in 3rd and short because TEs, slots and backs have their way within the 10 yd range that off ball backers are supposed to defend, I wouldn't expect the extra defensive ends to really matter.

What I think of Jones doesn;t matter especially since it seems to waver in recent months.  But what I think Schoen and Daboll believe is that Jones may not ever be great but can be a very functional part of a great team.  The reality is neither the Giants nor Jones have much in the way of better options.  Maybe somewhere along the way the team will get lucky and discover a day 2 QB gem or get 'lucky' and draft #1 in a draft with a bona fide blue chip qb prospect.  But until that day comes, signing Jones to a reasonable contract seems to be the best strategy for everyone involved.

We were the worst team to go to a Super Bowl in 2000.  Wellington Mara said it himself.  He was right.

I thought well of Jones for his career up until about 2 months ago when I finally gave up.   The last time I did this was when I finally called it early in the 2007 season when I said the team was just a hodge podge of ill fitting parts...4 DEs?...who has 4 DEs??  The season turned about two weeks later.

For now I'm keeping my opinion of Jones to myself.  I am a jinx.  Sometimes for the worse but mostly for the better. Keep the crow warm...just in case.

For a team that seems to be playing above their heads, taking a week off could kill whatever momentum or wave or zone they're on.

As a principle, I believe in finishing.

Three years at a reasonable price.

In the modern NFL, there is nearly no distinction between 4-3 backers and 3-4 inside backers.

These are the positions being referenced when we speak of LBs.  Dominant defenses have good, very good and even great LBs.  No dominant defense come equipped with Chase Blackburn type LBs.

They don't make the flashy plays.  They do the things that make the offense's easy plays not so easy.  When you see a defense running like a top, it's the LB holding the high value guys in front and behind them glued together in tight coordination.

But unless those LBs are in the 'great' category, nobody wants to pay them.  It's an odd paradigm most have come to shrug at.

I like Thibodeaux.  I don't think he meant anything by his actions as added insult to injury.

But I do think the eagerness to exercise a rehearsed celebration is *** as *+**

As a matter of fact, yes.  We've seen great defenses take down great passing attacks even in the modern era.

But for whatever reason it seems to be harder to maintain a dominant defense today.  Once your defense has reached its peak, the components start needing significant financial attention.  DTs and DEs and CBs suck up cash and then you can't justify paying your outstanding off ball backer who keeps the front half of the defense to the back half.  Or maybe you do pay your stud backer but now your space eating NT is gone because there's no way you're letting your edge rusher go.

On the other hand, WRs and RBs seem to come from all corners of the draft and can and do get replaced without significant drop off.
