Title: Tribute To Our Fallen Brothers And Sisters
Post by: vette5573 on November 13, 2011, 09:36:37 AM
After the passing of Slick, I thought that it would be nice to tack up a thread to say a few words about all the friends we have lost since we have been together both here, on the bbwc and as Giant fans.

This is to honor all of you:

Wellington Mara
Gabes
Christopher Allen
Mojo (John Morrison)
Evan Bedell
JanInNorway (Jan Samuelsson)
TuckerF (Gerry)
Slick (Tom O'Hara)
Sam56
Paul Rousse (Tailgate and Camp Friend)
Chief (Burt)
Phyllis (President Rick's wife and friend to many BBH members)

Please feel free to say share what you know about these fine men and any memories and experiences you have with them.

Great Idea Ed. I understand many here do not know some of these people, who helped shape our past boards and this one, so some recollections will help them understand how special they were.

Out of the 6 names, I had the privilege of meeting three of them. Evan and Tucker only once, but my time with them was great. We all met up at one of our in season get togethers to watch a game. I believe Evan had planned it and it was such a great pleasure to meet him for the first time. I just love being able to put a face to a name that I have been conversing with for years.
Both Evan and Gerry were great to be around, very friendly, knowledgeable and so easy to talk to. If memory hold, Evan passed very soon after that meeting, and we all were truly shocked. I remember Evan talking about next year trying to get more folks to attend. Two very nice gentlemen.

Slick, as he just passed, I am still in a bit of a shock about. I never met him, but I have conversed with him for maybe 10 years and I always considered him a friend. He was always polite, thoughtful and respectful of all other posters. Just a pleasure to talk Giants football with.

My memories of Chris Allen are filled with wonderful memories of his unique talent of basically knowing anything and everything about the NY Giants. For those that do not know, Chris died very young, from, what I believe, were complications after some surgery. I believe he was 39. But in his years, he was, without a doubt, a walking expert on everything Giants. And he never failed to let those know, that scoffed at certain things, that we needed to be respectful and civil and never talk bad about our Giants. I never met Chris and never spoke to him personally, but I had many exchanges with him, conversations with him about many things. Our favorite was whether or not Joe Namath belongs in the HOF. Our battles over that were legendary. Before he passed, I thought I had him seriously thinking of attending training camp the following year. He was an ex QB in college and knew the game inside out. he had read every book about the Giants and was our history expert on anything Giants. a true loss for our board.

Mojo and Gabes, where to start. Mojo  I met several times and there was never a nicer man you would want to meet. For those that didn't have the privilege of even knowing him, when he found out he was sick, he posted a sort of accounting of what he was going thru, different stages of his treatment and when he knew the end was near, his final thoughts. Truly one of the bravest men I ever met. I spoke to him over the phone maybe a week before he passed and he still had that sort of twinkle in his voice.Another who never had a bad word to say about anyone, and if any poster sort of got out of line, he had a way of personally writing to them, or just speaking to them and all of a sudden, things were OK again. For those that do not know, Mojo's son Aaron also posts here from time to time. Many of us met him and Mojo's family at one of our BB Q's,and several of us went to his gravesite to pay their respects. he lived in the Albany area, and never failed to attend any of our functions there.
Again, one of the nicest men anyone would ever want to meet.
Which brings us to Gabes. Gabes was the first of our crew to have passed away. He was a doctor by trade and a storyteller by luck. I never had the privilege of meeting Gabes face to face, but we talked on the phone weekly, and I considered him a very close friend. I remember when he told me about his sickness. he said he was out flying a kite or something and he felt very dizzy. he went to the doctor and they found he was sick. I remember his words saying one day you are alive and well, and the next you are dying. Very sad, but he never dwelled on that. I used to send him jokes every day thru email, and I also remember before he passed, I spoke to him on the phone and he told me those jokes brought so much joy to his life when so many other things were not going well. It made me feel I was a help to him during his illness.
Drake was a very good friend of Gabes also, visiting him. between myself and Drake, Gabes became a legend on the BBWC as stories of Gabes, the 'Golden Hoofer', the CIA agent, the acrobat, the man who personally won WWII, who found gold in CA, and so many other things, became the stuff legends were made of. There hasn't been a good Gabes story floating around for so many years, I truly miss them.
And remember Gabes constant battles with Painter. I call them battles but they really weren't. They used to throw all these words and expressions back and forth, words that no one has ever heard of, but these two would try to outdo each other, with Gabes usually holding his own. Just great stuff.
I guess I was closest to Mojo and Gabes, and really miss them to this day. I remember sitting next to Mojo on the hill at training camp, dissecting the Giants for the coming year. Listening to his thoughtful insight on the players and on the team. Gosh how I wish we could be doing that again.
Someday, when I am not around anymore, maybe we will. and I have some great jokes for Gabes.

Thanks for letting me remember these great people.

I never met Gabes, but I remember one day after being new to posting on the bbwc, he sent me a message. I was impressed that he actually took the time to make a nice comment about one of my posts. After that we exchanged a few times. He was a true gentleman and was not just respected on that old version of the board, he was loved.

I also never met Chris Allen. Len's memory is the same as mine. Chris would post a lot on the bbwc. He would get into many discussions about history and the x's and o's of the game. He needed to respect your knowledge of the game or else you were just a "casual fan". I found out more about him after his passing from a friend of his and we kept in contact for a little while after that.

Then there was John Morrison (Mojo). I considered John my friend. We met up in Albany for camp a few times. One time just the two of us. We tossed the football back and forth as we discussed the team. We went to a game together on my birthday on a beautiful September Sunday and the Giants beat the Redskins. That was a great tailgate and a great day. We would keep in touch by E-mail and by phone, even through his illness. I'll never forget the day he finally felt well enough to speak to me after battling throat cancer and called me in the middle of the day just to tell me how much he appreciated my friendship and the friendship of all the folks from the board that he met and knew. I arranged a phone call the very next home game about a couple of weeks before he passed away at one of our tailgates and John was able to speak to his friends for the last time. That next summer we met Aaron and his mother Carol and the rest of the Morrison family at our BBQ get together. Many of us went to his gravesite to pray and pay our respects. I will never forget my friend John Morrison and the man he was.

I met Evan and Gerry at get togethers. Both were fine men. Evan's death came as a real shock as he passed away a couple of weeks after we were all together. Slick was a long time poster who would always give us the scoop of what was going on in the Philly area as he lived there. A real good guy. Gerry was just a quite gentleman who enjoyed coming to get togethers and being with the group. We all had dinner one night and we met his wife who came with him for the weekend festivities. His passing just blew me away.

Last but not least, Wellington Mara. I met Well a couple of times in the touchdown club before Giants games. He was so down to earth and personable. I actually went to his wake viewing to pay my respects to the man who gave so much to the game of football and set the bar to the integrity of the organization and to ownership of a team in the National Football League. I remember that I planned to be in NYC that day and I took the Subway from where I was. As I walked the few blocks to the memorial home, I passed Giant Fan after Giant fan coming and going wearing their colors to pay their respects to the man. It was surreal. I spoke to a member of the family and gave him a printout of the memorial thread and all the touching comments from the members of the board. They gave me memorial cards and I mailed them to the members who requested one. This true Giant of a man will also never be forgotten.

To put things in perspective: some of the people listed here were Giants message boards pioneers - some of the very first people to use the fledgling internet, back in the mid-90s, to build and participate in an online community of Giants fans. It was a very interesting thing that way. It was also a learning process. We were all trying to figure out how to use this new medium to have conversations. The etiquette wasn't as settled as it is today, and not everyone (myself included) knew how to handle the anonymity that went with it. It got quite heated at times, far more than this board or even the current BBWC ever does. But it enabled people to speak across regions, sometimes across the world (there was an early feature on the old graffiti wall and then board that let you see where everybody else was in the world, which at the time was very cool and novel).

Regarding specific people: I never met any of them so my impressions were those of a fellow poster.

Christopher Allen was memorable. No one ever took an internet message board more seriously. He saw his role as a gatekeeper - he greeted almost any new poster with a comment about the "casual fan'. He had a profound hatred of the AFL and all former AFL teams (this was the source of his hostility to Joe Namath). He also saw himself as a protector of the reputation of Wellington Mara and the team's ownership and would get furious if someone criticized the way the team was being run. He was a staunch defender of Jim Fassel and some of his battles with others on the board (Retro in particular) were legendary. When he died, many people were stunned to discover he was 41. They had him pegged as a guy who was much older.

Gabe - I remember him as a humorous poster with a light touch - he didn't seem to have much to say about football or the Giants, but genuinely enjoyed interacting with people on the board. People genuinely liked him, because he was so friendly.

Mojo - His football understanding was astonishing. He was very welcoming and friendly to new posters. He exuded warmth, sympathy, and intelligence. As far as I could tell, the only way to get him mad was to say a bad word about Harry Carson, his favorite player.

A question to those of you who were on the old boards - what was the format that was used around 1999-2000, before the transition to BBWC, when MOTM actually was transitioning out? Wasn't there a guy called Steve who "owned" the board in some way and was the moderator-ruler of it? Just curious if anyone remembers.

My memories of the posters

Gabes- was before my time, but from the old posts I saw he was a true gentleman

Chris Allen-  I never met a more serious or better informed fan.   Chris Allen was a true football historian and he had a very solid knowledge of the game.   He may have been a bit prickly, but he also challenged us as fans to raise our knowledge and understanding of the game.  That was a special gift and his passing is what inspired me to put so much time and effort into increasing my understanding and knowledge of the game.

Mojo-  Was a good man, a good fan and an excellent poster

Evan-  The guy was so strong looking and vibrant.  I was shocked to hear he died shortly after I met him.  Evan was a good man who brought a light hearted sense of humor to the board.  A good man and fan.

Jan-  I didn't know him very well

Tucker-  Was a smart and reasonable man who always conducted himself in a honorable and good fashion.   He lived a great life in service to others and he was truly a valued member of the community.

Slick-  A great guy with a terrific sense of balance and humor.  His presence on the board was always a positive and he will be greatly missed.

Thanks, Terry. No, i remember the early days but I'm thinking of the transition period in 2000. I think the fellow's name was Steve Jones. He ran the board the Super Bowl year. it was kind of a rough and tumble board that year. MOTM was mostly AWOL. There were transitions having to do with the dot-com bubble ending, as the board passed from owner to owner. (and eventually landed with scout).

"This is very difficult for me" posts the softspoken, darkly handsome man in the blue Giants tie. "As I seem to miss my friends more as time goes by. I remember the Golden Hoofer, his gentle smile, dry wit and keen sense of humor, as well as his sinister side, the adept man of action and adventure. He was always astounded when I would uncover another hidden nugget from his 'checkered' past, and would reveal it to a drop-jawed BBWC, like the fact he single-handedly stopped the Nazi's heavy water experiments in WWII, invented Milk Bones on a Hollywood set of the Thin Man, and taught Leonard Bernstein his music theories on orchestration.

Once my good wife and I went to suburban Cinncy and had a wonderful Italian dinner, repleat and lubricated with draft Peroni, and he refused to allow me to pick up the check. We asked him if he really was the BOCCI ball champion of Cinncy, but he wouldn't admit or deny it.

So as his illness was revealed by his little side trip to 'the Land of the Cleves', I returned his kindness by descending upon his house and cooking a seven course Italian feast for him and his beautiful wife, complete with mussels in wine sauce, stuffed chicken Marsala, and homemade bread etc. He got his energy up and we did an old softshoe routine from his vaudeville days, with Joni shaking it all and he just laughed until we cried.

What a wonderful person, he did MORE medicine for free in various clinics than he did at his own practice, and was in constant demand for consultation, also, with an uncanny ability to correctly diagnose difficult and rare conditions. His lifelong love of GMen extended to other fans, including us at the BBWC. He would carefully and laboriously type out his replies to others on his WEBTV screen, slowly, as WEBTv is/was. Legend has it only HIS vocabulary was dense enough to make even Painter step back. He remarked to me about Painter getting crotchety in his 'old age'; "He's old enough now to know better"

I will always miss his weekly chats on the phone, about literature and politics, art and musicks. Gone but not forgotten"

Nice job Drake.

I miss those long threads e used to have glorifying the 'Golden Hoofer' and what he really did for our little world..

BTW, wasn't he the man who taught John Wayne to walk with that slight gimp, to make him more noticable???
Title: Re: Tribute To Our Fallen Brothers

"Yes, Lennman, that was true, he had a bit more to do with that. Actually, it was during his Hollywood years, when the Golden Hoofer was on the Newport Beach at a clambake, when a young USC football player named Marion Morrisson sailed in on the riptide Newport Beach was so famous for. The young man, a huge physical specimen, was hurt as he was body surfing, so the Good Doctor tended to his wounds, and sent him on his way, with a phone number to make a follow up appointment, which he never did.

Seems that the wounds were so extensive, that he couldn't play football for the Trojans anymore, so they dropped the young man's scholarship and kicked him out of school. Morrisson then remembered the Good Doctor, and went to see him at the movie lot where he was consulting at the time with his good friend John Ford.

He sized up the rough and tumble Iowan, and said "We can get you a job working props, and as Westerns are all the coming rage, a few choice bit parts are there to be had, we must change your name. Marion Mitchell Morrisson sounds too much like and English country garden sissy, we need a tough name, two first names, Like JOHN, as in my friend John Ford, and like Wayne, in Wayne Buchinsky the fighter. That's good, like JOHN WAYNE. Now," said the Golden Hoofer, "we need some way to make you stand out in the crowd. Pretend I didn't do such a good job on your leg, limp just a bit on that side, hitch your thumbs in your belt, try that." The young man seemed a bit awkward at first, but soon smoothed it out. "Just like that" amused the Golden Hoofer, "just a little hitch in your get-along!" The Hoofer took him to meet John Ford, and history was made that day, as John Wayne was soon to be a star to eclipse even the Golden Hoofer's notoriety"

 =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>

I remembered it also, but I forgot some of the more intricate details. Glad you reminded me.

did the Golden Hoofer ever tell you the story about what he did while his new buddy, 'The Duke' was busy making his first movie.

You see, the good Doctor was sitting around with not much to do. As he had his sketch pad with him at all times,  he started drawing characters he would like to see in children's stories. The Hoofer always loved children and was always doing all he could to help entertain them. anyway, he saw this little mouse running on the floor of the room, so he decided to make a sketch of a mouse, but tried to make him more human. He gave him big ears and some shorts to wear.
While he was sketching, a young man started looking over his shoulder, and liked what he saw. He said, "Gee, I never thought about making a mouse character, but let me borrow your sketch and let me see what i can do with it. That young man's name was Walt Disney. The Golden Hoofer was thrilled that Walt liked his mouse, and told him he had other animals that he had drawn also, like a Duck, a Dog, some birds, a flying elephant. He told Walt he had other great ideas also, but others thought they were just too far fetched, like a beautiful maiden who goes to live with a group of little dwarfs, and another story of a poor sister who gets to go to a ball because of a bunch of mice and a fairy godmother. The Golden Hoofer was also a romantic, and he told Walt about his daydream of a beautiful princess who was put to sleep by an evil witch, only to be woken by a handsome prince.
Walt was fascinated and asked the Hoofer if he would come to work for him, and help design an amusement park he was thinking of building. Of course the Hoofer wanted to help, but told Walt, it would have to wait until after the coming war, as he would be away overseas, spearheading the European war effort. .

To this day, the Golden Hoofer's little mouse has become the symbol of Walt Disney and an endearing image to children of all ages.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mojo at camp one summer. I was the new guy at the picnic and he really went out of his way to make me feel welcome. We talked for a while and he really made an impression on me, I was very saddened to find out I would never have the chance to meet him again as I read the Mojo chronicles. I always enjoyed reading the posts from Gabes and I really appreciated the kind posts he would send me when I might get offended by the back in forth that would go on in the old message board. CA to me was the ultimate fan. I thought I loved the Giants, but he took it to another level. I remember one post he shared about his game day rituals not to mention his dedication to Giant history. All great members of this board, and all dearly missed.
To you all, I check in here every day, and I've been doing that for the last 20 years or so. You all are like family to me.

I love to read all of your comments. I have been away from this site for about a year or so. It saddens me greatly to see the passing of such great people and fans. The one and only "Golden Hoofer", aka Gabes.  I got to meet him when he and Joni had travelled to his native RI to visit his mom in a nursing home in Providence. They drove down to Narragansett to meet us for breakfast on a patio by the beach.

The first thing he did after our greetings, at the age of I believe 68, was to flex his considerable bicep in his tank top and mock-seriously ask me to report back to the BBWC gang that they'd better watch themselves, because "Gabe will kick your @ss !"  He then informed us that he was hesitant to reveal what he'd done for a living before retirement, because it could influence how I perceived him. His lovely wife scoffed and told him he was being silly, but he wouldn't budge. He promised to tell me in six months. I can tell you that for the rest of our vacation in RI that year, my wife and inlaws and I were preoccupied with guessing what the mysterious Gabe's background might hold. (Drake, I know you can relate.)  Some kind of agent was a popular guess -- FBI, CIA, IRS. Perhaps a paroled felon? Nobody guessed medical doctor (eye surgeon, if I recall).

What a pleasure to know him.

Forgive me for sharing a remnant of the other board, but I wanted anyone who wasn't there in '06 to see this.  We used to do an annual t-shirt in time for the summer get-together in Albany, and this one was special.

The ever-mysterious Chris Allen, who often said he might meet up with one member or another at camp but never did, was memorialized on a medallion on the wrecking-ball chain.

Title: Sam56 has Passed Away...
Post by: Mark on February 05, 2017, 06:14:17 PM
Hello everyone,

I haven't been around much in the past half decade or so, but I wanted to pass on a post that came across my Facebook feed this afternoon. This is news regarding Sam56, a long time member of the old BBWC and BBH. I got to know Sam on both message boards and had the pleasure of meeting him several times in Greensboro, North Carolina.

QuoteThe family of Sam K, has asked to convey a message on facebook about him. As you probably know, Sam has been suffering with a wide variety of health issues for several years including diabetes, congestive heart failure and alzheimer's.

He is currently in the Kernersville Medical Center and will be going to Hospice for care tomorrow. Hospice Home Kate B Reynolds

If you are friends with the family members, please keep them all in your thoughts and prayers as they enter this new phase. Any spare good will, prayers and well wishes would definitely be welcomed. Many people have come by today to offer support and the family thanks you.

Please keep Sam and his family in your thoughts and/or prayers.  :'(

Sincerely,
Mark (formerly BigBlueBuff)

I'll keep him in my prayers.

This is very disheartening news. I always liked Sam and had a great relationship with him. Over the years we have many7 posters who, for so many reasons, just stop posting and I thought Sam was one of these. So sorry to hear about his dire health issues. If anyone see relay a message. tell him, or his family he was a great poster and he is in our prayers. We wish him the best, as good as it can be.

I member Sam, good guy!
little overzealous on his Yankees but HEY! who isn't overly zealous on their team?
you know we should have a fund or something so when our people have problems we  can send a card or something from the group.
Heck Id gladly donate to help out with the program.
MG can actually get home addresses on the members right? maybe a little work for someone but it would be nice, I think,
just a thought.

Sam and I used to banter each other with his Yankees and my Red Sox.  I also wondered what had happened when Sam stopped posting.
I think Weeze, for once, has a good idea about a fund that could be administered by one of the mods preferably.
I'll start off with a $25 check made payable to someone. Heck, if we got 20 to contribute $25 we've got a nice fund of $500 established.

Who knows if he needs the money. I like John's idea of a card but if he's on Hospice, it may not be long and he may not be conscious. It would have to be a nice note to the family. Perhaps Mark can provide us with an address. If so, then we can put together a few thoughts like we have done so far and send it with a card from his friends at the Big Blue Huddle and some associated names.

And the bad news:

QuoteSam did pass away early Tuesday morning in his sleep at the Hospice. His daughter was with him. Thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family, especially for his wife of 54 years. Five minutes with Sam and you knew how much he loved his wife, his family and his dog. He will be missed greatly but I rejoice in the fact he is physically and mentally restored to full health.

Details are pending but will be shared when available.

I will state that during the time I spent with Sam, he always spoke of his wife and family first and foremost. His daughter was also a huge Giants fan.

RIP Sam.

I have an address for the family, but I don't think it appropriate to share it publicly. Perhaps I can give it to Rich and we can send the condolences in one card?

Actually, I was given this contact for the funeral home. Sam's obituary hasn't appeared yet, but I assume it will soon. This might be the best means of communicating condolences. http://www.pierce-jeffersonfuneralservice.com/ (http://www.pierce-jeffersonfuneralservice.com/)

Please keep Sam and his family in your thoughts and/or prayers.  :'(

Sincerely,
Mark (formerly BigBlueBuff)

you are missed on BBI.

As we have said SO MANY TIMES, we are like a family here. We may not always see eye to eye, we may have fights and arguments, but in the  end, we all respect one another and we all mourn when one of our own passes away. We share the good and the bad, the joys and the heartaches. Regardless of who you are, whether or not we have met or just have become friends by having one thing in common, the Giants, we are all family here.

Vette

The last thing I ever want to do on the BBH is change the theme of a post--so if it is out of line please delete..  This thread reinforces how grateful I am and should be to my Maker.  One week from today I will be 86 years old and here we are talking about all these great people who have left us far too soon.  First thing I do everyday after a prayer of Thanksgiving that I am able to see another day is read on line my local newspaper.  The next thing is check in on my family news site-the BBH.

My wish for all members of this board is that they get to enjoy a life as full as mine has been and I look forward to meeting all of you some day--It may be in a place other than Giants Stadium at a tailgate but think how great a celebration of another Giant season it will be with John, Mojo,Chris, Sam56 etc etc etc all in attendance

Gratefully

I'm sure that a lot of remember "Chief"  whose name was Burt.  Sadly, he passed away this past Nov 18th.  I had been keeping in touch with him through emails but haven't heard back from him for some time.  Yesterday, I got an email from his daughter Kate Reed telling me the sad news.  He was a really good guy & a great Giant fan. =D> =D>  May he RIP.

jimv: Please extend the condolences of all of us here to the family of The Chief, and thank you for forwarding the information here.

I had also noticed there were no posts from Burt after about the middle of November, but chalked it up to the fact that the Giants were once again out of the playoff hunt early.

Sadly, the actual explanation is the worst possible news.  May he rest in peace.

Thanks for being the bearer of such distressing news Jim. I know it isn't easy to relate things like this. I know Burt came to this board with you many years ago and you always spoke highly of him. As many said, I never had the privilege of meeting him, but we always had good exchanges. I also remember when he posted about some of his illnesses and how it was getting harder and harder to post, but he always tried and his posts were always well thought out and informative.
I do remember he was from 'our' generation, that is, the sort of 'older' Giants fans who goes way back with the team.

Please Jim, relay our deepest condolences to his family and tell them he will be sorely missed over here.

May he RIP

I'm so sorry and saddened by the passing of this lovely woman. Many of us knew Phyllis the many years we went to training camp in Albany and at the BBH Get-Togethers. My prayers and condolences to Rick and his family.

From Facebook:

It is with a broken heart that we share the news that our beloved Phyllis passed away at 8:30 PM on Wednesday, October 14, 2020 as a result of massive system and organ failure, including heart failure, caused by pancreatitis which began three months ago following gallbladder surgery.  A celebratory/memorial of her life for immediate family only [Covid-19  restrictions] in a few days.  Please remember Phyllis in your prayers and keep her forever in your heart. Heaven today is an even better place upon her arrival.  Please, no cards or flowers..

I haven't been on BBH for a while, but I got an email from Dan and a call from Ed today about Jim and his health. I would say Jim and I were very good friends and this news really disturbed me. I speak with Jim all the time, about once a month, and last time he sounded well and was in good spirits.
I kind of knew something was up when he didn't send me a Passover greeting and when I sent him an Easter greeting it bounced back to me.
Anyway, I just called his home and spoke with his daughter. As said Jim is
terminal and expected to pass away any time now. He is at home but not conscience and it is just a matter of time. He had skin cancer problems but was OK until a couple of weeks ago when it seemed to have spread to his brain and he went downhill very quickly. His daughter said she will notify me when he does pass.

Just unbelievably horrible news. There wasn't a nicer man around and as huge a Giants fan as anyone could ever hope to be.

I am going to share why I say that JimV is one of the toughest guys I know.   It was some years back, when the Giants still held training camp up in Albany.   They held a practice on an unusually hot afternoon.  It had to be well over 90, and the sun was beating down with no shade.  A few of us were sitting in the crowded bleachers at the start of the practice, including JimV.   I was dressed for the hot weather with a hat to shade my head, shorts, and sandals.   Jim was dressed in long pants, shoes, and a short sleeve shirt.  At this point, Jim was around 80.

As practice wore on, very crowded bleachers got emptier and emptier as the sun and the heat wore down even the most ardent fan.   I have a strong preference for warmer weather, so I stuck around, but what I found truly amazing was that when the crowd dwindled to just a handful of fans (less than a dozen), there was JimV.  Talk about an ardent fan and a guy who was tough as nails.  He didn't care how hot it was or that he wasn't really dressed for the heat; he was going to watch his favorite team practice (not play, mind you, just practice) come hell (and I think that weather came close) or high water.

Jim came to join our group when Pat Traina discontinued her fan forum. I recall he came along with Jaime and The Chief. We first met in person at a tailgate before a Giants Game. As I recall he came with The Chief. Well, that was the first of many terrific tailgates we had together and a very memorable day at George's home in Troy NY. We celebrated Jim's 80th Birthday and Bill gave him an autographed photo of Coach Coughlin. Here's a short clip by brother Sam took of us at a tailgate.

God, country, family, Giants   That was the JimV  I knew--I met Jim 12 years ago thru the BBH--I feel as if I have known him for a lifetime---we exchanged emails weekly--sometimes more than one per week--we had so much in common

Jim was a very big man in stature but as gentle a soul as anyone I knew---He was kind, understanding, and always tried to be positive--He did not have much patience for hypocrites--he would tell you that but yet he truly tried to follow the mantra--love all your fellow men--his faith was his model--I have had email exchanges with his pastor of his Church in Maine--he would tell me that Jim was one of the most respected members.  I am sure that God has welcomed Jim and already assigned him to the task of being a greeter to those that will follow him.

JIm was extremely proud of his service to his country--he was a Colonel in the Air Force--holding several positions of leadership while serving--

There is a void today on the BBH--we have lost a stalwart--a true gentleman, a man of really not an over abundance of words but quality and thoughtful when he did contribute. He never forgot the surprise many of you had for him in Troy NY to help observe his 80th birthday.  He often talked to me about it

The Giants were his passion.   I admired him so much--he honestly would root as hard in game 16, even if the Giants were 2-13 going into that game as he would if they were 13-2

To say that I will miss Jim is an understatement--even kind of dumb to say it--My heart is aching--I am in a helluva funk--but I am taking Jim's advice which I know that he would pass on to me--pray Dan--its going to be all right!!!!

I do take comfort in the fact that I know for sure that Jim arrived in heaven at least a half hour before the devil knew he had passed

God Bless our friend Jim

I got to meet Jim on a couple of occasions and on one he gave me some sage advice.  This was probably 10 years ago or so - I was still in my twenties.  I introduced myself as zephirus from the board and he sat for a second and finally said "great poster - you just have to learn to not take the bait".  He was right, I was too full of piss and vinegar and too hell bent on being right.  Always took that to heart from that day on in my postings here.

Several people mentioned about Jim's funeral arrangements. I felt a bit funny calling so I sent an email t o his daughter about the funeral and the like. I just received this reply

Hi Lenny,

I was going to contact you.  We just arranged the funeral a couple of hours ago.  His wake will be Wednesday, April 19th from 5-8 PM at Dolby, Blais & Segee funeral home in Gorham, ME and his funeral will be Thursday, April 20th at 10 AM at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Gorham, ME.

Blessings,

Beth

Since someone mentioned sending flowers, I have asked her if that is OK or if would she rather have a donation made in Jim's name to any particular organization. If and when she answers, I'll post it.

I have really held back my thoughts about Jim and his passing as I really needed a day or two for this to really sink in.
My friend Dan put up some eloquent words and I fully agree with them all, but for myself.

I have met many posters on this board and have corresponded with many others for years. I consider many of them friends, but then there was Jim. Jim was a friend, but he was more than that to me and also to my wife. He was what people throw around--good friend, but to me, he was that and more. Our friendship went way beyond BBH and the Giants. Maybe we have known each other for 15 years or so. We met when he came back to Long Island to visit some relatives and I suggested meeting up for lunch. At this first meeting, he brought some Giants memorabilia and we hit it off instantly and have become, and remained good friends ever since. I have tried to go up to Maine every year or so and when we do, we always took a day to visit Jim and Marie and they warmly welcomed us into their home each time. We watched games together and whenever we went Jim always insisted on taking us out to dinner and always picking up the check. He did insist on one thing, that we pay the tip, and always informed me he was a big tipper. When we were at his house, he used to take me up and proudly show off his entire movie collection and then his great trove of Giants memorabilia. I can still see him standing there holding the one treasure that he absolutely loved, his signed Frank Gifford jersey.
We shared many happy moments together and many sad and troubling ones. There were many times Jim used to call me at all hours about something happening on the board and I had to talk him down but the next day we always laughed about it.
Jim had family in the Midwest and used to go out to Kansas every year to attend the College World Series. When his great-granddaughter was born he couldn't wait to show her pix off to everyone and anyone.

He was truly one of a kind. My good friend and I will miss him terribly.

Thanks for listening.

Is there any way that we could export this thread into an email or something so we could share everyone's posts and thoughts with his family?  A mass or sympathy card is nice, but those are just pre-written words.  What people typed here was from everyone's hearts and may provide some comfort to his family.

I haven't posted in a dogs age. I just lurk around and read everyone else's posts. But, reading about Jim's passing has inspired me to log on and write.

I used to have season tickets, and faithfully attended the BBH tailgate parties hosted by Ed and Sam. One of the highlights of the season was the one game each year that Jim hauled his old butt down from Maine. I always considered it a special treat to have Jim hold court during those hours spent feasting and talking Giants football. I always felt like this was the real Jim; He was our friend but he would be exactly the same guy no matter where he was, who he was with, whatever the occasion. He was exactly that: Genuine.

I first met Jim in Albany, at a Giants summer camp. Back when they still had two-a-days. I was struck by how old he was. As long as I've known him he was this old dude, recalling players who put on the big blue jerseys way back before I was even aware of football. He was this amazingly charismatic old bull, full of the stories that make up a life. Amazing stories, told very well.

My wife and I took a trip up to Acadia Nation Park about eight years ago to celebrate the centennial of it's founding. We met up with Jim and Marie on our way home, and they were incredibly gracious and welcoming to their friends from Pennsylvania. They were proud Maine folk. Glad to see us enjoying their amazing home state.

If you check out the YouTube video that Ed posted on page 3, of he and Jim clowning around at the tailgate, as Tyrone Powers and Gary Cooper (an homage to their love of classic films), you will see Cyndi and I make a cameo as Olivia deHaviland and Peter Lorre. I remember that silly moment like it was yesterday.

Jim was a devout Catholic. When the end finally came to him, I am absolutely certain his spirit was ready to be welcomed home to the place made for him by the Lord. I simply have no doubt.

I cant believe he's gone.

I asked Jim's daughter, Beth, what would be appropriate if anyone wanted to do something for Jim funeral or just out of respect. She replied today:

Good Morning Lenny,

People are sooooo nice, aren't they??!!!! My Mom wishes, because Dad would ALSO wish it, that instead of flowers we would appreciate it if people donate to their Parish, St. Ann Catholic Church in Gorham, Maine or to Catholic Charities.  Dad was VERY active at the parish and also Catholic Charities in Portland, Maine.

Blessings,

Beth 😊

I am not on here that regularly at the moment (work being done on the house and the normal life grind) so I am a bit tardy.

Many, many years ago when I first found my way on here as a Brit looking for a place to discuss the Giants Jim was one of the first to welcome me.

He has been a constant presence. Through thick and thin (including thoughtful and solicitous messages as I recovered from my severe illness). Always forthright. Sometimes irascible. Often funny. He touched all our lives and that will endure.

It feels a little strange posting now and knowing he will not pop up in the thread. Even his absence is a presence.

Great post Dave.

I don't know where to begin when it comes to talking about Jim and how I felt about him.  So forgive me if I just ramble on a bit.

I also met Jim at Albany training camp.  God those were the days.  I miss them so much.  I met many new friends at Albany that I still consider close friends.  Jim and I hit it off right from the start probably because we both were a bit long in tooth and we had a reverence for vintage old school New York Football Giants. He loved the Giffer and I was obviously a big Red Webster fan. Another thing we had in common was that we were both Civil War buffs. Buff meaning that it was an interest of ours not that we were any sort of expert on the subject.  One thing that would always bring a smile to Jim's face was if you brought up Joshua Lawrence Chamberlin and the 20th Maine and their role at Little Round Top.  Jim was very proud of his Maine heritage.

Jim also liked his beer.  Especially Shipyard brews.  He often treated me to one of Shipyard's 12 bottle sampler packs when we got together.  Shipyard used to have an ale named after Joshua Lawrence Chamberlin.  It may have been Jim's favorite.

My family was so honored to be able to call Jim friend.  My wife Cindy, son Adam and his wife Lindsey, my daughter Wendy and my sister Pat all knew and loved Jim.  This man was special and I don't throw that word around. When I say special I mean it.  The last time I saw Jim was a couple of years ago when we were at Portland for a wedding and Cindy, Pat and I met Jim at DiMillo's Restaurant on the Portland waterfront. It was one of his favorite places.

There is much more I could say about Jim but I think I will just finish by saying how sad our family is about his passing and we send our very best wishes and condolences to Marie and the rest of Jim's family.  Jim I miss you my friend. Rest in peace.

A couple of JimV stories...

The Giants had drafted a Receiver back in the day and I liked the kid. His name was Ramses Barden. Well Jim said, "He's a bum, was a bum and always will be a bum.

We had a bet on a steak dinner.

Fast forward to a tailgate on a beautiful Fall day. I buy a dry aged, prime Porterhouse and grill it to perfection and never saw anyone enjoy a steak so much as Jim did that day.

First time I met Jim was at a tailgate with my brother and I think Rich. His first remark was, "Look at all these mustaches!" 😂

Jim would drive down from Maine on game day with family or a friend. This one time we start cleaning up and we're about to begin heading out to the stadium. I tell everyone as I always did to remember to bring your tickets. It was then that Jim realized he left his tickets at home. My brother and I being not too far from home offered our seats to him but then he was able to get his daughter to take a picture of his tickets and they were able to be scanned at the gate. That day, Jim and technology became good friends.

That was you and I that handled the ticket crisis, Ed. I think Rich was also involved. Jim didn't forget the tickets, he brought the wrong tickets, tickets for a different week. I think he was with his son-in-law. We had his daughter email a photo of the tickets, then we walked to will call and spoke with the ticket rep. He told us that the photo would work but, once scanned, it was on into the stadium because once the barcode was hit it was no longer any good. That was back in the day when it was still paper tickets; now it is all scan codes on phones.

I miss him, Man.

I just saw this. I knew that Jim was sick but didn't know that he passed away. I remember the Ramses Barden bet and the steak that Jim totally enjoyed, and Dave given a wonderful Peter Lorre impersonation. Lenn is right, Jim's favorite Giant was Gifford. Every time One would mention Gifford in a conversation Jim's eyes would light up.

For a 1 PM game we would begin the tailgate at about 9AM. Jim would come down from Maine which meant that he had to get up real early in the morning to get there at about 10 AM. He would bring down Maine Lobsters for the tailgate which we totally enjoyed.

Jim came over from the Patty Traina site when she had to close it down. Has anyone notified her about Jim passing?

Rest in peace Jim, you were truly respected and loved by the members of this Giant community.

Post by: Ed Vette on June 22, 2023, 07:42:55 AM
Lenn was visiting New Hampshire and he knew Tomeee moved there and sent an email. His wife responded back that he passed away in February of last year.

I had many tailgates with Tomeee, his friends and family. Linda and I had lunch with him and his wife in Piermont one day. We attended a couple of special events at Giants Stadium and the Meadowlands. He also hosted an away game at his house when he lived in Rockland County.

This is tragic and sad. He was too young and had so much to live for.

After losing Jim and now Tomeee, it's important to know that it may be the last time you see them or talk to them and that friendships are precious. Finding friends through the astronomical odds of the Internet almost seems like destiny.

Farewell T.

This is sad news to say the least. Tomeee lived in Yorktown Heights, NY only a few miles from where I lived in Somers NY. When we had group get togethers we would carpool to the event. I got to know his family.  One of his daughters went to school with my niece. I had a small group, Ed and Linda, Tomeee and his wife, and Rich over to my house for a Sunday Barbeque. I really enjoyed his company at the tailgates before a game.

I am stunned and saddened to learn of Tom's passing.
He was very knowledgeable and passionate about his Giants, and although he was generally a laid back dude, he could get pretty fired up on line.
We didn't always agree. But, we could always agree to disagree. I truly miss that sentiment these days.
We tailgated a couple of times back in the old Giants Stadium days. He and his wife were parking lot veterans, who put out a generous before game spread, and a little after game snack, before hitting the road. I loved me some after game snacks.
Back then I was still on Wife 1.0 (before the upgrade). We were all Deadheads. I distinctly remember one of those games took place on a rainy Sunday afternoon. We all huddled together under a big pop-up canopy listening to music from his extensive Grateful Dead collection of concert recordings. Cassettes.
We actually caught up with each other once outside the old Brendan Byrne arena before a Dead show, which was flipping amazing in the days before cell phones were everywhere. Pure, joyous serendipity. And, the sweet fragrance of the green leaf.
Fair thee well, Jack Straw. Settle down easy.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Awful news.  Dave is the reason I am on this forum.  I used to be a big participant on the BBWC board and reached out to the members there sometime in 09 as I was going to training camp (back when it was in Albany).  Dave responded and we met - and within short order he convinced me that there was a better Giants board for someone as knowledgeable as me.

Also called me out of the blue once and asked if I wanted to tag along to a pre-season game, his treat.  It was one of those days where everything was going wrong for me and the opportunity to pop out of my head and go see the Giants was a much needed relief.  I'll always be indebted to him for that day.

Terrible news. Although my memory isn't great I'm pretty sure I met him up in Albany, and I know I interacted with him on this board. My thoughts go out to his family.

Dave was a great guy.  Never an ill word toward anyone.  He was a true gentleman and a fun guy to hang around.

Met Dave at an Albany get together several years ago. A very nice man. Very sad news.

Dave was a friend and fellow tailgater. Along with Ed and his brother, my son Dan, Tommee and his crew, Brian and sometimes Rich and Jim from Maine we had a great crew. Three of this group has passed away over the last year or so. Never a bad word about anyone. A nice guy and a good friend.

His family had season tickets in the upper deck around the 40-yard line that were handed down to the kids, Dave, his brother Vinny, and his sister Joyce, from his father. My condolences to Cyndy and his family.

I just heard this news and it is just terrible. WTF is going on around here with us losing 3 wonderful men in such a short time?

I have known Dave for basically as long as these boards have been going. He was a regular fixture in Albany at our BBQs, at the tailgates whenever I was able to go, and, of course, here on these boards.

Again, just terrible, terrible news.

As the saying goes, 'the good seem to die young'

My condolences to his wife and family.
