Big Blue Huddle / Darious Williams chooses Rams
March 12, 2024, 07:06:08 AM
Per Ian Rapoport. Our CB need remains glaring. He was a very smart option. Let us see what else Schoen can come up with (and how he will generate the cap space needed).

Roster better at:

OL - 2 starters added; Runyan LG/RG flex, Eluemunor RT/RG flex
Edge - Burns is a big upgrade at a huge price
ST - kept our own wth Gunner for a full year a small + (but need more)

Roster worse at:

QB - need at least QB2
RB - need another vet to help Singletary run by Committee
S - even if we like Belton, depth is an issue

Roster holes not yet touched:

DT - need more than Dex inside (keep A'Shawn?)
TE - especially if Waller goes but cannot rely on him if stays
WR1 - will have to be draft
CB - will Darious Williams sign?

Players we might yet want to keep
The most obvious options are T Phillips as swing T (might be later due to injury), Bredeson as back-up C and Robinson at DT. Hodgins at WR also likely IMO.

State of cap:

We have none given the reported deals for the signings. This means we need to create room for any more than veteran minimum deals and to sign draft picks. The obvious options are Waller retire/cut, Dex and AT restructures. Maybe a Slayton restructure or even an immediate restructure of the Burns deal.

Free Agency v Draft
The Burns trade reduces draft ammo. A trade for a QB now would eliminate it so have to think we are running back Jones and praying, making WR and two of DT/CB/S the most obvious day one and two draft targets. If we trade up for a QB losing day 2 and future picks we will be scouring late camp cuts for key pieces.

It has already been interesting 😉

Big Blue Huddle / Wink’s D is boom/bust
January 08, 2024, 05:07:19 AM
The only thing Giants were good at this was forcing/avoiding turnovers.

Joint 1st on total turnovers (31, 18 INT, 13 FR) & differential (+12).

Turnovers are the core of Wink's D philosophy but as a team we needed 10+ more sacks on a season and 20-30 yards fewer per game rush D to really make it work. We gave up too many cheap yards on the ground which combined with an inability to generate regular pressure sustained long drives for opponents that routinely led to 'easy' TDs.

This is possibly part of the tension (adding to personalities) between Daboll and Wink. I can imagine the HC values more highly a regular and predictable supply of the D forcing 3 and outs, seeing turnovers as a bonus with Wink seeing turnovers as THE key to winning D.

I am in favour of keeping Wink but I do think he needs (with help from Schoen) to find ways to shore up the recurring clear weaknesses in his D scheme.

After we secured English Premier League survival in the most dramatic comeback fashion from 0-2 down to win 3-2 last night to ensure our 68th consecutive top flight season next year.

It will also likely our last one at our grand old home of a Goodison Park (built 1892 and often modified since) before moving to our under construction new riverfront home at Bramley Moore Dock for 2023/24 (or at the latest 2024/25).

I certainly know how to pick my teams to maximise stress but in truth Everton picked me as I am 4th generation and my kids 5th generation fans/sufferers. Much though I live and breathe the Giants (deep in my blood through my NY/NJ family roots on my Mum

I just thought I'd mention that the Mets achievement of making the play-offs with 'a team of injury replacements' has drawn a bit of attention this side of the pond with a lot of emphasis on the 'amazing coaching job' doe by Terry Collins. Given how many Mets fans love to hate him is this a situation where distance lends perspective or one when a little knowledge is a dangerous thing?
