The Front Porch / Re: Quotes
Last post by Jolly Blue Giant - Today at 09:24:22 AM
Quote from: y_so_blu on Today at 12:15:05 AMThe study of history is a powerful antidote to contemporary arrogance. It is humbling to discover how many of our glib assumptions, which seem to us novel and plausible, have been tested before, not once but many times and in innumerable guises, and discovered to be, at great human cost, wholly false.

Paul Johnson

That's a mouthful that is spot on. In short, "those who don't know history, are doomed to repeat it". And at great cost when following notions with a track record proving it doesn't work and is disastrous - over and over again throughout history. I'm always reminded of my professors with a white board explaining how a system (proven to fail throughout history) can work with a couple of adjustments. Earth to professors: "EVERY SYSTEM WORKS ON A WHITE (or black) BOARD"

The Front Porch / Re: Buffet VS Woods
Last post by Jolly Blue Giant - Today at 09:17:38 AM
Unfortunately, I made more than a few decisions with my portfolio based on Woods, as she was a risky investor in new technology...right in my wheelhouse. Not that I didn't like Buffet's plan of attack, but Buffet tends to invest in stodgy stocks (oil, trains, petroleum, and chemical giants) that sell for over a 100k per share, and me - being inclined to invest in tech (and lower priced stocks) - invested primarily in NASDAQ, trying to catch a ride on an upcoming technology. Bit me right in the ass! Should have rolled it all over into gold after the election to ride out the huge drop. It was around 1700 per oz in '21, and now around 2400 per oz  :(

Glad to see she has somewhat recovered. NASDAQ really crashed hard back in '21...much worse than the big board

I probably won't change my habits either. I can't give up cake, pies, donuts, pastries, cookies, ice cream. Heck, once in a great while I would eat a whole coconut cream pie in one sitting. Luckily I have been maintaining my weight but I really should lose 30 pounds.

Quote from: 4 Aces on April 18, 2024, 07:01:35 PMThat's a great way of articulating it.

I've been saying this for a long time, in "defense" of Jones.

You can get by with a bad OL and good skill players, or a good OL with bad skill players. But you won't get by with a bad OL & bad skills. NFL is too good for that.

I do not believe for a second you can get by with a bad OL and good skill position players.  The OL drives everything.

Q. Coming in, do you find historically speaking that the draft tends to address needs, or do you feel there's a good core in place that you can be flexible?

JOE SCHOEN: I think right now we have enough needs that it can go either way, offense or defense. I think we're not one player away or two players.

So I think Shane (Bowen) coming in has been phenomenal with his communication and articulating what he's looking for in his scheme. We've had really good communication with him throughout this pre-draft process in terms of what players fit his scheme and, again, the value where we can get those players. Shane has been a really good addition and enjoying my time working with him so far.

Big Blue Huddle / The Rich Eisen vs Joe Schoen f...
Last post by MightyGiants - Today at 09:01:28 AM
Rich Eisen has always struck me as more of a schmoozer than someone who was controversial or combative.  Yet, he seems to be having a low-key feud with Schoen.

ROUND 1-  Rich Eisen declares the Giants are done with Jones and have buyer's remorse

https://x.com/CGF_Sports/status/1765009205293875316

ROUND 2-  Joe Schoen pushes back and suggests Rich's claims are not true

Q. At the combine or after the combine, Rich Eisen went on his show and said that all he heard was a lot of buyer's remorse from the Giants -- he didn't say from whom obviously -- about the contract given to Daniel. On Monday Daniel talked to us, and he said very confidently, he thinks he is the best quarterback to start the season, assuming he's healthy, for the Giants. Where are you right now, maybe small and big picture, on Daniel Jones?

JOE SCHOEN: Like I said before, the expectation is for him to be our starter. Again, I don't have a crystal ball. I hope he doesn't have any setbacks. He's working his tail off.

One of the things, when you go back and you watch the 2022 season or all of his throws in 2022, like he was a 25-year-old player that played at a high level and we won 10 games and won a playoff game. I'm still confident in Daniel, the way he's wired, what he showed us in 2022.

Again, did we have the best start to the season last year? Absolutely not. Anything that could have went wrong, it seems like it did early on between injuries and some other things. I've still got a lot of confidence in Daniel.

Q. Doesn't part of you wonder who told Eisen that stuff?

JOE SCHOEN: I can't worry about that. There's stuff out there all the time that's not true. You really can't let it bother you. I've got a good relationship with Daniel, and we communicate all the time.

Again, he's here all the time. We've got a good relationship, and we communicate well. If he has an issue or hears something or something I think I need to talk to him about, we do that often.

ROUND 3-  Rich doubles down on his claims and predicts the Giants will draft a QB high in the draft

Quote from: katkavage on Today at 07:36:23 AMYes I agree with this to an extent. The window is short. But if the high profile talent is wasted and the results are still sub par, the fans in the seats will get very antsy. That is why this year's draft is probably the most compelling for the Giants than any in memory. Though I think what they have to do is clear cut, it really isn't. There are so many factors to consider. But again, as I said above, I am not thinking 2024, but beyond that. I don't think anyone can realistically think the Giants can suddenly be a power next season.

There is absolutely zero expectation of the Giants becoming a powerhouse next season. Competitive, perhaps, but certainly not a power house. Close the gap with Dallas and Philly and the season will be successful.

Peace!

They have a #6 puck and MUST cash it in with an "impact player." Anything short of that and the draft is a failure. If an impact player is not to be had for them at puck six, then dump the pick to the highest bidder and fill the roster with BPAs; holes will be filled while others will get stronger.

That would be my intent going in.

Peace!

Quote from: TONKA56 on April 17, 2024, 12:12:20 PM32 of 58 for 316 with 2TDs and 0 INTs doesn't sound that impressive, yet it's probably the greatest game I've ever seen a quarterback play.

But I suppose you need to factor that against 64 dropbacks, six sacks, 12 knockdowns and 20 QB hits.

That's not bad. The best I've seen with my eyes live, and my statistical sample is very small, was 26 of 37 passes for 321 yards, two (2) TDs, one (1) INT; nine (9) carries for 59 yards and one (1) TD. Of course, that was last season's comeback in the desert 🏜  at Glendale over the Cardinals; the tale of two halves game.

If nothing else, Jones proved he could air it out in that game. Yes, he missed once or twice, but he also hit Hyatt and Slayton long as well.

He knows this is the season to produce or his career will move to a new city, simple as that. What's not simple is the hell he's had to endure with this team in trying to establish his career. Some make it through (e.g. Simms, Hostetler, Collins, Manning) while others do not (e.g. Patterson Plank Joe, Craig Morton, Dave Brown, Kent Graham, Danny Kanell, etc.).

Even the great ones who did were smacked back down to Earth when the team around them struggled or lost players or their head coach (e.g. 1987, 1991, 1994).

BTW, I visited your Alma Mater last month when the NY Rangers came to town. Check it out the next time you're out here as they've completely cleaned up the areas around the campus and it looks state of the art now.

Peace!
