Big Blue Huddle / Re: With the 47th pick the Gia...

With only 3 CBs and 1 DT drafted on Thursday night, it shapes up well for the Giants to start Day 2.

If the Giants DO actually want a Guard as an upgrade to what they have, all of them are still on the board, as are all the Safties. That was expected though. There isn't much separation between the top 3 guards, so one of them will probably be there at #47 if they want one.

With the money the Giants have tied up in edge rushers it might be difficult to sign Ojulari after this season. With five guys on the last year of their deal at LB they may go for some depth at Edge/OLB. CB has a similar problem.

For me, getting good CBs and DTs late in the draft rarely happens. McKinstry and DeJean could be the first two picks of Round 2. My preference would be CB Ennis Rakestraw Jr., Missouri or DT Braden Fiske, Florida State in the 2nd, and hope the Guards keep falling and you can pick op a quality one in the 3rd Round.

By position, the value going into Round 2 remains at WR followed by CB and DT.

Quote from: bamagiantfan on Today at 05:45:35 AMI've always liked Slayton because he seems to outplay his ability every season. But the fact that the Giants have not been able to upgrade the position over the last 4 years has made him valuable to the Giants. He'll show up. He'll compete. He will stay healthy or play hurt. He'll be ready when his number is called. I wish we had more wide receivers like that. Maybe now we do. We'll see.

I agree. I like Slayton.

Quote from: Ed Vette on April 16, 2024, 11:52:14 AMIn 2022 a managed game plan of a Rushing Attack and a Quick Passing Game of short passes, supplemented with Read Option Runs and allowing Jones to take off when he saw nothing in the field, DJ had a successful season. Would that be referring to him as a Game Manager? In some respects, yes. Not that GM is a dirty term. All QB's need to manage the game from the huddle to the pre-snap reads, to moving protection and calling audibles.

2022 was a year that showed how Daboll could create a system where Daniel Jones could thrive, but it also covered up his imperfections and liabilities. Part of the reasoning behind the plan was the fact that the Offensive Line would struggle to protect Jones in the pocket and not allow time for downfield throws.

When the decision needed to be made on DJ's contract, they knew that he had skills both tangible and intangible that they could win with and felt that with the proper support of a team around him, they could win games. Oddly enough, they weren't completely sold on him so they created a contract that had an escape after two and three seasons.

Their next step was to try to solidify that Offensive line in 2023 and retain the O-line Coach in his second season, while bringing in some passing weapons in Waller, and Campbell, and drafting deep threat Jalin Hyatt. Unfortunately, the O-Line had injuries, Waller was injured, and the expected improvement from key players did not happen. Daniel Jones was injured and did not finish the season.

Jones was replaced by backup Tyrod Taylor who had some success under slightly better conditions but then he went down to injuries and "Flash In The Pan" Tommy DeVito with his enthusiasm rejuvenated the team and they won some games until he was figured out, bringing in Taylor once again to cap the season off on a higher note. Still in all that, it was apparent that the league figured out what they needed to do defensively based on what was successful for them in the later part of the 2022 season.

In their post-season evaluation, they knew that the Salary Cap on Jones meant that Jones would be their starting QB in 2024. They brought in three veteran Linemen with a history of success to improve the O-Line. The move they didn't make was to retain the best offensive weapon on the team. The man who was responsible for what success they did have in running the ball. They didn't sign their UFA Saquon Barkley.

Based on all this and however you decide to digest some or all of it, does this look like a Franchise that would have long-term plans for Daniel Jones? Is this a year they would pass on drafting a QB somewhere in the first round?

Obviously, they planned to replace Saquon with Devin Singletary. His production was good in Buffalo but he averaged just slightly over 11 attempts a game. Whether they draft a QB or not, what will be the Offensive Game Plan this season for Daniel Jones?
They had JJ McCarthy sitting on their laps and they passed him up for a Number One Receiver. Regardless of whether they pick up one of the third tier QB's in Pratt or Rattler or a surprise in Milton, either Jones or Lock will be slinging the ball at least for this year and maybe in 2025 too. No if and or buts about it.

I see Williams, Daniels, and McCarthy all thriving. Maye will struggle with a very bad team around him. Nix I just don't think is very good though Payton might get something out of him. Penix got screwed. There is no way he plays for at least two years unless Cousins gets hurt (which is very possible). If I'm an Atlanta and/or Penix fan I'm pissed. It's not like Atlanta had the luxury to give up a first round pick for the distant future. They are that good.

It leaves Slayton playing out his contract this season unless we get an above market trade offer (anything above his original draft round) in the next 24 hours. He will likely have a chip on his shoulder.

Williams has a very good supporting cast. So does McCarthy. Nix has Payton. One of those three likely has the best situation even if the three I have not mentioned are 2-4 in some order in terms of talent.

Schoen/Daboll (and particularly the latter given his QB whisperer status) have IMO gambled that BOTH Jones and Lock are better than Penix, McCarthy and Nix. Both because given Jones injury history we have to see Lock as 1b not 2. If the Giants felt they could improve 1b that was the biggest bang they could possibly get at 6 and they would/should have pulled the trigger.

Their reputations now ride on how Jones/Lock perform and how those three guys do elsewhere. Let us hope they got it right.

Given how unpredictable R1 was it is hard to say.

My guess is one of Tyler Nubin, Mike Sainristil (degenerative knee concern), TJ Tampa or Braden Fiske if there at 47 but a G like Beebe or Haynes or T like Paul is also possible if available.

Will guys like DeJean, McKinstry, Newton keep falling due to their respective injury concerns? If so, how far and how do we feel about the risk/reward? McConkey is in the same boat but surely we will not double dip WR?!

Adonai Mitchell got dinged on character. Will Sweat (expected R2) also get hit (not that we need another massive DT rather than a 3T)?
