The Front Porch / "She is not good enough for him"
March 27, 2024, 11:05:23 AM
Since it's slow here I wonder if this sounds familiar to anyone.

When my mother got engaged, my father's two aunts told my mother she is not good enough for him because she is cross eyed.

When I got engaged to my current wife, my mother told me she is not happy. It was frustrating because I was 38 at the time. Did she want me to risk not finding love just to meet her standards?

My son got engaged last Christmas and my wife is unhappy about his choice. She feels he could do better. There are a number of reasons she feels that way. Whenever she comes over, she is quiet and seems like she doesn't want to be here. She only speaks when spoken to. She is not perfect but she is a good person and they get along well. I'm more open minded than my wife.

I guess my splurge is having newer cars. I'm into my second 3 year lease. We traded my wife's 7 year old CRV for a new CRV last year.

I like the excitement and reliability of a new car. I like not having to deal with mechanics frequently as they often try to BS customers into things they don't need.

The Front Porch / Back Surgery or No Back Surgery?
March 09, 2024, 08:37:32 AM
Just wondering if you or someone you know was in a similar situation.

Six months ago, I developed pain in my hip. An x-ray showed my hip joint was OK.  I went for physical therapy and it slowly helped for the most part.  A month ago I developed sciatic nerve pain down my right leg. I was the approved for an MRI.

The MRI shows that I have Severe Inner Channel scoleosis in my lower back.  My spinal cord is very narrow between L4 and L5. It is being compressed by my backbone.

My spine doctor recommended surgery but he wants me to go home and think about it as it is a serious decision.

The surgery involves a rod and screws into my backbone between L4 and L5. There is a chance I will be in a lot of pain after surgery and recovery time is 3-4 months. There is no guarantee it will relieve the pain and pain relief could be 25%, 50% or 100%. There is a small chance or nerve damage during surgery or an infection.

Currently my pain profile has changed. I don't have shooting pain down my right leg to my foot but I have shooting pains from my lower back into both buttock areas. I would give the pain level a 3 out of 10. My right leg feels a little more numb and heavy footed than my left leg. It kind of feels a little asleep.  I'm afraid the pain may increase suddenly or the sciatica may come back. It's hard to sleep with sciatic nerve pain.  In the meantime, I'm still doing physical therapy.

I'm not going to make a decision off of your comments but your thoughts are welcome.

I just watched the movie "I Think We're Alone Now" on Tubi. It's a post apocalyptic movie.

Peter Dinklage plays the possible last human on earth who seems to like his reclusive life. He encounters a young free spirited woman that upsets his life.

It's a slow burn but Dinklage kept me watching. Not a great movie but it's free.

Several people from the board usually go to camp on assorted days. I'm sure someone would be willing to supply a ride for you. PLUS, I usually never go to camp here, but if you decide to come down I would love to meet you and would definitely attend a session.

Gosh, how I miss our get-togethers in Albany.

I would love to meet with you too, Lenn, and anyone else who wants to join in. I'll have to work on my wife a bit since she is not into football but I think I can persuade her.

Funny how I felt like I had to have a Landau roof on my '83 Cutlass Supreme because that was the in thing and it looked cool. Now I would never consider it.

When I saw the picture of the Plymouth Barracuda, the first thing I thought of was that old Barracuda commercial where a young guy is driving his mother in one and the mother calls the car "Bananacuda". Funny what the mind remembers.

As far as muscle cars, I love the look of a black '67 Pontiac GTO convertible and the Shelby Cobra.

There was an Outer Limits episode that really scared me. It's the episode where a space ship lands near an army outpost. Out of the spaceship came a bunch of oversized ants. They crawled all over the outpost and eventually entered and attacked the soldiers.

I made the mistake of reading the Exorcist. It gave me major anxiety. Just like the early part of the book, I started to worry that things in the room would begin moving on its own.

I'm not trying to revive this thread but I left out a big one.

I know religion and politics are touchy subjects. I'm on a private Facebook page that discusses Christianity and the Bible. Sometimes I post my opinion on something and try to back up why I believe it. Several times I have gotten "I'm laughing at you" emojis.

I think it's so rude and it shows an intolerance towards people with opinions different than their own.

The Front Porch / What Irritates You?

Those intentionally ripped jeans bug me especially the ones that cost a fortune to buy.  It's ugly and makes no sense.

The slang word "sick" as in "That concert was sick".  What does sickness have to do with greatness?  Sick is something I associate with not feeling good.

The slang word "fire".  "That song was "fire".  Come on. Just say it was excellent.

My wife is a great person and I'm happy she is in my life. She's a talker and could use some patience. She has a habit of interrupting me because she can't wait for her turn.

I own it.

Since it's slow here I thought I would ask. Not an exciting question.
