Big Blue Huddle / Re: Giants draft visits to date

Quote from: Jolly Blue Giant on April 03, 2024, 01:08:36 PMMost makes sense...but Chau Smith-Wade, not so much.  :-??  Unless they are thinking nickel or something else. He's short, and he's too slow to stay on the outside (5'10" / 4.54 40 time).

All true. But Zebra Technologies, who tracked the Senior Bowl participants, had him as the fastest DB in maximum acceleration and 5th fastest in deceleration in yards per second.  In other words his start/stop and COD is terrific. He stood out in the game in Mobile - the first he's ever played the slot in having practiced for the first time in that role during the week in Mobile. As a slot guy, he undoubtedly has a future.

Quote from: Philosophers on April 03, 2024, 01:18:14 PMI dont see it with Flott either inside or outside.
Me neither. But I think he's been more miscast as a slot CB than as a perimeter guy. I'd like to see what he can do there more than I'd like to see him being deeply average in coverage from the slot as well as a hugely ineffective  tackler against  the run. Either he makes it outside or I think you can change his name to Flopp

Yep, love Matt. His podcast is one of the few I listen to around this time of the year and his RSP (Rookie Scouting Portfolio) is a good read too

Easier said than done.  As we've seen.

Oh I dunno, it's actually easy to do. Just play Eluemunor there instead of Neal ;)

Big Blue Huddle / Re: CB Max Melton
March 30, 2024, 09:00:08 AM
On the plus side for Melton,  he played both inside and outside in a 4-2-5 scheme. That's largely what Bowen plays (2-4-5 if the EDGE's are standing) so Melton has a leg up in terms of knowledge having received pro style coaching utilising man and zone concepts in Schiano's defense.

A better question may be whether Nabers will implode the way OBJ did.

He already has an entourage, got caught with a gun he didn't have a permit for, shows his frustration on the field and spouted off on social media when he didn't get as many targets as he liked despite having a Heisman winning QB throwing the ball.

No doubt, he's young and could mature but there's also the chance that fame goes to his head and he turns into a distraction the same way OBJ did.

I have zero such doubts about Odunze (or MHJ for that matter) and considering all three are ridiculously talented that would be a factor in my evaluation if I were making the final decision.

A big reason why you put people "on tge board" at '30' visits and ask them to explain both good and bad plays during interviews at the Combine. So much of QB'ing pre-snap is cerebral.  This is why we loved Eli

Yeah but his Pro Day is today and his is the last one of "the big four". I'd imagine we'll hear about him non-stop for a week thereafter  ;)

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Predictions
March 25, 2024, 06:14:07 PM
I predict I will record a few pre-draft podcasts giving my views on prospect fits to NYG. I then predict we will draft at least one player I didn't like🤣

Best fit for what I want to see? Odunze. He offers several attributes our other WR's just don't.

But Nabers isn't exactly a consolation prize...

I'd say both. In Neal and JMS we took players considered "plug and play" then tried to change their technique. That's a coaching problem.

The fact we identified players who couldn't change technque successfully, even knowing we'd try to, is an evaluation issue.

That's the equivalent of drafting a plug and play zone corner to exclusively play press-man.

This post was liked by former Pro Personnel Director and GM Randy Mueller! My claim to fame!

Banks is the only one guaranteed a starting role. Major  improvement is needed opposite him and a veteran  likely to be bought in during FA or we have to draft over what we have

Flott - can't get off blocks or tackle. Bowen expects his DB's to help in run defense. I don't  mind him in coverage but if he isn't  the nickel back, is he even going to make the team? He isnt physical enough to make it on ST's

Hawkins III - Overmatched when thrown in as a rookie and tackling was pitiful given his size.  Could rebound but shouldn't bet on it

Holmes - flag happy UFA. Can't see him being back but he's the one nickel who tackles well and can blitz too

McCloud - solid role player but how much are you tendering him as an RFA when he's a core ST guy but not someone we will play at perimeter CB if we have someone better? Right of first refusal tender is likely to be higher than $2.6m. He's not worth anything near that so either he signs for fairly close to the minimum before the league year starts or he'll be a UFA.

Forget the other two.

Given the desire to stop the run, the Texans Jonathan Bullard might be the EDGE we target over Huff and Uche, both of whom would be very explosive pass rushers in a stunt and loop scheme.

I can see us shopping top shelf at G. Onwenu with his previous experience under Bricillo and preference for RG makes sense given that position has more man pass blocks than LG. Lot of good LG's in this draft but not many RG's. My alternative is Jon Runyan jr
