Big Blue Huddle / PFF QB Generated Pressures
October 10, 2023, 04:06:38 PM
Not sure how they calculate this and what they quantify as a QB versus the offensive line generating pressures but thought I would share.  It's interesting that if you take this and adjust the total number of pressures the Giants have given up the offensive line ranks third to last rather than last. You cannot view this attachment.

Big Blue Huddle / Snap Counts
October 09, 2023, 01:45:00 PM
https://www.footballguys.com/stats/snap-counts/teams?team=NYG&year=2023

The group I was most interested in were the WR's.  I was surprised to see Hyatt's snap count drop from week 4 while Shepard's snap count increased (maybe to help Jones's comfort level).  The trend that is definitely clear is that each week both Campbell and Hodgins snap counts are decreasing with Robinson's increasing.

Big Blue Huddle / NFL Coaches Weigh in on Daniel Jones
October 05, 2023, 12:11:51 PM
https://theathletic.com/4928209/2023/10/05/giants-jets-daniel-jones-zach-wilson-struggles/

1. Daniel Jones' limitations stand out to coaches.

Jones would look better if the Giants' offensive line were not so weak, if running back Saquon Barkley were healthy, if the team had better wide receivers and if the Giants had faced fewer top defenses to this point.

"I wouldn't want to be playing quarterback for the Giants right now," one offensive coach said.

Still, coaches who have watched Jones this season do not see evidence the Giants have faith in their quarterback to operate more than a basic offense. They see a quarterback who limits the Giants' options more than he expands them.

"It's very noticeable how little they make him play like an NFL quarterback," a defensive coach said. "He has the easiest reads and the easiest concepts, and still he does not throw the ball accurately. He doesn't throw to the correct leverage, doesn't throw the receivers open, just doesn't do it. I'm giving you zero opinions. This is all the tape shows."

This coach cited example after example of misplaced balls even on completed passes.

A completed swing pass to a wide-open Barkley that the running back had to catch between his ankles in the closing minutes at Arizona was one such play.

The placement of a completed pass to Parris Campbell late in the second quarter against San Francisco that prevented the receiver from getting out of bounds to stop the clock was another.

When Jones connected with rookie Jalin Hyatt for a 31-yard gain in the late going against the Cardinals, it was a huge play, but the ball placement brought the defensive back into position for a near breakup.

"The guy is open — just lay it up to him," the defensive coach said of the pass to Hyatt. "He makes it a competitive jump-ball situation."

The pick-six interception Jones threw against Seattle, which precipitated Daboll's sideline tablet toss, was among the obvious missteps.

On another pick-six, this one against Dallas, Jones targeted Barkley on a third-and-19 play in the first quarter. The Cowboys had a cornerback positioned in cloud coverage to smash into Barkley the moment Barkley caught the ball. That's what happened, sending the ball high into the air, where it was intercepted and returned for a touchdown.

He's not wrong if you watch enough games that don't involve the Giants.

Big Blue Huddle / Daniel Jones on the Playcalling Rumors

Wouldn't expect him to throw anyone under the bus but thought it was interesting to hear him say it's Daboll's offense.  Sounds like it's a collaboration more so than anything.

Everyone's punching bag the offensive line played great in the second half allowing Jones to make plays.  Gotta give credit where credit is due beyond just Jones who was great in the second half.

He's not wrong.  There were a number of posters who pointed this out in the Game Thread.

Breaking: Geno Smith and the #Seahawks are finalizing a three-year contract extension worth $105M with the ability to earn $52M in the first calendar year, sources tell @theScore.

I'm interested in what the Guaranteed money is on the deal.

Interesting article that gives a lot of credit to the coaching staff for getting the most out of Jones.

Big Blue Huddle / NGT: Sean Payton to Denver
January 31, 2023, 04:44:51 PM

"Compensation: Denver's 2023 first-round pick and next year's second-round pick for Sean Payton and the Saints' 2024 third."

Shocked that this went through that he would take the job given their circumstances.

Yes, Hockenson killed them with 10 catches for 129 but Jefferson was a non factor with only 7 catches for 47 yards.  Credit the game plan and execution on defense knowing what their capabilities were and how they could take Hockenson having a big game if Jefferson was a non factor.

Big Blue Huddle / Passing Production: Chicken or the Egg?
December 29, 2022, 07:00:13 AM
Hoping this doesn't evolve into another "you know who" thread but going to give it a shot.

Think we all agree that for a passing offense to be productive multiple components of the offense need to be in synch.  My question for you all to discuss what is the most important component to have a productive passing offense?  What position does it begin with? Is it having the QB, Offensive Lineman or the play making WR? (Chicken or the Egg)

The Giants are 6-24 in his NFL career in those games.  This season they are 1-3 in games where he has had 32 or more attempts.

IMO there are one of two ways the Giants can go after this season that they can win with.  One is they can chose to retain Daniel Jones for a reasonable cap hit per season.  For me the max I would go is $20 million per season.  If they go in this direction they need to build the team around their running game and a dominant defense.  Which means investments on offense should be on the interior of the offensive line as well as RB depth.  Almost through 4 seasons it's clear that you can win games with Daniel Jones but it's not going to be in a pass heavy offense where you rely upon his arm to pass you to wins.  The wins are going to come with the running game, Jones being efficient and a stingy defense.

The second direction they can go in is moving on from Daniel Jones acquiring a new starting QB building the team around that player whoever it is.

I have no idea which direction this regime will go in especially if they decide to replace Jones but it is clear for me that building a team that centers around Jones and a heavy passing game regardless of who the receivers are is not something that will lead to consistent winning especially after Jones gets his next contract.

Big Blue Huddle / NFL Drops per Team Through Week 10
November 18, 2022, 09:41:34 AM
Interesting that while not great teams whose passing games have produced significantly more yardage than the Giants have had more drops than the Giants have.  For all the criticism the Giants receivers have gotten they haven't been nearly as bad as they've been made out to be.You cannot view this attachment.
