Chalk Talk / Re: BBH Midseason Podcast

Listening now. Thought you guys did a nice job breaking down what has been going wrong with the offense. The lack of auxiliary blockers is really hurting the team.

Personally, I'm for going to more 4 WR sets. If you look at the games where the offense was really productive last year, they used a lot of those packages. That would allow them to move Beckham around the formation, as they did last year, and generate favorable matchups. It would also allow them to get Dwyane Harris on the field occasionally, who I think is their best WR blocker (and pick setter), and would do better with those over-the-middle routes Ed mentioned. Finally, I think they need to use OBJ to take the top off. Early in the game, on first down, send him deep and clear some space for underneath routes. And what about getting Beatty on the field as an extra TE blocker?

I just don't think they have the personel to run these screens and TE routes they are going to so often. Unless they except that, the offense is going to continue to falter.

No. I thought your voice was the clearest of the three. You also spoke with a consistent, measured pacing, which is very important, especially for the guys who are calling in and the sound quality is less than ideal.

I would try to figure out a way to make Rich and Brian's voice sound more like yours did, sound wise, actually.

Chalk Talk / Re: Passing Routes- The Passing Tree
February 01, 2016, 12:04:13 PM
I love looking at these trees and thinking back to certain receivers who I identify with certain routes, or certain variations on them.

Amani Toomer, for example, I will always associate with the out-and-up or the post corner. When Kerry Collins got time to let those double moves develop, his smooth cuts would leave DBs in the dust.

Victor Cruz and Ike Hilliard ran those zone-option routes to perfection. Remember the San Fran DB crying on the sideline about how he couldn't cover Cruz 1-on-1 in the NFC Championship because he couldn't read when he was going? Hilliard would sit down in those underneath zones like no other. He rarely had the speed to get deep behind a cheating safety -- but for one memorable time in that '01 NFC Championship when he and Collins made the right read and he streaked in for the easy TD on the first play.

Plax and Eli perfected the fade route, they seemed to have telepathy about knowing whether to go over the top for the jump ball or that sneaky back-shoulder throw. Ask Al Harris about that!

Mark Bavaro used to run this variation on the out route where he would quickly cut out, then back inside, spinning the defender off him. Tony Gonzalez also used to run a similar route years later.

Finally, Dave Meggett running the option routes out of the backfield. In '89-'90, the Giants would go "All-9" on about 30% of their 3rd downs, let Meggett slip out into an open area, and work his magic.

Interesting. One thing that I would note is that I think Dwight Clark was the "X" receiver in Walsh's offense.

Another thing I noticed is that the Giants like to set up OBJ all over the formation, but most often they have him set back off the line, so he can use his quickness to get a clean release. I saw Randle, and Myles White actually up on the line more often. McAdoo likes to use these bunch formations where it seems like the receiver on the line is creating a distraction for the defense/creating interference for the guys set behind him. Occasionally, this works in their favor because the defense can get caught ignoring that receiver on the line because he is so often used as a decoy, and he can slip through for a deep gain.

I imagine that McAdoo must've been so disappointed to loose Cruz just as Beckham was coming on, because I think having two receiving threats the defense really has to respect is kind of a key to unlocking another whole chunk of potential in his offense. Because of this, despite the obvious needs on defense, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Giants shell out some money to get a big physical WR or at least a guy who is adept at making plays on the ball deep and keeping defenders' hands off him at the line of scrimmage.

Tom Coughlin is my all-time favorite head coach.  He's also the easiest man in the world to get rid of.  You just ask him to leave.  If he's the Giants' head coach next season, it will be because no one asked him to leave.
I agree with all of this. Also my favorite, and yes the man respects authority, possibly to a fault.

Is it hard for anyone else to watch a Giant team with real linebackers ???
I try not to compare.

But how about Banks in this game? Not sure I have ever seen an LB sacrifice his body that way to blow up running plays.

So cool Ed. I never got to see those childhood heroes in person. I finally got to the old stadium in 1996 and then saw them loose one game every season for the next five. Broke the streak when I ponied up to get tickets to the 2001 NFC Championship Game my junior year of college. What a way to break through.

I have not watched this game since I saw it live when I was six years old. What a total domination of a very, very good team by the Giants.

Take your chance to watch legends like Carson, Banks, and Burt rough up Bill Walsh's west coast offense before they take this down for copyright issues...enjoy!
