"There is no question he possesses the physical traits to develop into a quality NFL QB with a chance to be one of 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙨𝙩."

@gregcosell
's scouting report on UNC QB Drake Maye ✍️

𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗚𝗧𝗛𝗦

- Desirable combination of size, throwing ability and athleticism. Possesses the needed traits of an NFL QB.
- Easy natural thrower with minimal effort. Could drive the ball down the field: Knee bend, hips and core torque.
- Explosive arm talent with the traits to make every throw. Can drive the ball at all levels with velocity and touch.
- Aggressively worked between the hashes with refined sense of timing and anticipation, velocity and firm touch.
- Threw with velocity when demanded and pace and touch when needed.
- Showed subtle pocket movement with two hands on the ball. Re-set his throwing platform with a firm base.
- Good athlete who can make second reaction plays, throwing and running. Also designed QB run game.
-Second reaction playmaking dimension with outstanding poise and composure outside the pocket on the move.
- Strong mental framework reflected in that bad plays did not affect him. Came right back and made good plays.
- 2023 – It is evident from tape that Maye can execute a drop back passing game with efficiency at all levels.
- Outstanding go ball and fade ball thrower, with precise ball placement, especially with no margin for error.
- Showed poise and composure to trust and work comfortably through progressions. Stayed sound in the pocket.
- Snaps he started to move then re-settled, getting his feet under him with a firm base and delivering cleanly.
- Consistently played with a calm helmet. It was evident he knew what he was seeing and how to process it.
- Poise and patience to move within the pocket when primary read was taken away to work to secondary reads.

𝗪𝗘𝗔𝗞𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗦𝗘𝗦

- At times, he drifted in the pocket to his left when there was no pressure and no reason to move off the mid-line.
- Consistently showed a tendency to drift rather than stay in the pocket. Created his own pressure at times.
- At times, he was tentative in the pocket. He did not turn it loose when throws were there. Must become more decisive.
- Too many dropbacks in which he left throws on the field. Needs to process and isolate quicker from the pocket.
- At this point, he lacks a refined sense of timing-anticipation, resulting in throws that aren't made that should be.
- 2023 – Still showed tendency at times not to register and process reads, leaving clean throws on the field.
- Still too many snaps he drifted to his left when there was no pressure.
- There were a few too many misreads where he didn't process the route concept versus the coverage correctly.
- Needs to develop a better feel for pocket movement rather than running out of the pocket. Higher-level trait.
- While he threw outstanding deep ball, must become more location precise on intermediate and shorter throws.

I know there's been some debate over what John Mara said Monday regarding trade deadline dump deals and specifically Saquon Barkley.

If you enjoy the debate, check out my good friends
@ShaunMorash
 and
@rydunleavy
who are entertaining all those who follow this morning.

But these two points are important from Mara: 1, the timing last year regarding Saquon - NYG still held out hope that Daniel Jones' return  the week after the deadline would give them some life last year.

2, Mara still had hope that Giants could sign Saquon at their price. Obviously that did not happen, but it's also why he did not fault Schoen for not dealing him.

Message to the locker room at the time is a big point, but not every situation is the same. See Leonard Williams.

Quote from: uconnjack8 on Today at 09:18:42 AMThat quote makes me think Mara is still way too involved. Sounds like the subject was discussed and someone said don't trade him.  Could be the coaches given the offensive looking offense they were putting on the field, but I have to wonder.
The Eagles who have played against Barkley  2X per year (minus injuries) for 5 years and have made a lot more good moves than bad, thought he was worth signing.

One question, didnt Barkley grade out as one of the top blockers at his position the last couple of years?

As for the passing game, I disagree with peoples assessment  and am guessing Roseman does too.  This this the guy that lined up as a WR and beat Marshon Lattimore for a long TD.  RBs that can line up as WRs are definitely a commodity today.

Matt,

I specifically watched Barkley's speed (which is independent of the O-line).  His speed (which made him a special RB) simply wasn't there last season.  He was getting caught from behind when he did have breakout runs or large holes to run through.

As for his receiving, even Barkley knows he has issues.  He was constantly doing drills to work on his hand-eye coordination in the last two training camps I was at.

As for Howie Roseman, I don't believe he is the super genius some believe him to be.  Yes, he has made some excellent trades, and unlike the Giants, he is willing to tank to help his team gain valuable draft capital, but beyond that, Howie has drafted and signed players who have failed as well as the hits that people like to focus on.

Ric is a current CFL scout and, I believe, a former NFL scout.  He has his own takes on the draft, and his view on the quarterbacks is very different from the consensus.   It's an hour and forty-five minutes long, but the good stuff about the QBs and the WRs are both at the beginning of the pod.

Just reported on Talkin' Ball LIVE with Pat Leonard: source says #Giants are scheduled to send a contingent to Ann Arbor, Mich., on Easter Sunday for a private workout with Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy. Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll attending multiple pro days this week, had LSU QB Jayden Daniels today, UNC's Drake Maye tomorrow. Brandon Brown & Shea Tierney were at McCarthy's pro day, but now comes a closer look #NFLDraft

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on March 27, 2024, 07:51:51 PMDoes "still trying to win" mean he thought they might make the playoffs?

"Still trying to win" for the sake of winning when you know you have zero chance of actually contending and almost zero chance of the playoffs, instead of investing in your future during a throwaway season, sounds so absurdly foolish.

Also if what he said is true, why did they trade Leo?

Makes no sense.

Unfortunately, Mara is part of that group that feels winning meaningless games is better than being well set in the draft to acquire assets that can assure the team's long-term success.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on March 26, 2024, 10:03:14 PMI hear you. It bothers me less than you, but I understand where you're coming from.

The NBA has games on Christmas too, and I have never heard anyone complain much about that. Sporting events get played on the holidays of other religions all the time. And, as I touched on before, Thanksgiving is a massively serious American holiday where families also get together and spend time together, and nobody seems to have an issue with games on that day. And that's three games, not just one.

At the end of the day people who don't want to watch the game don't have to, obviously. To me this is much less objectionable than having games end at 12:30am on a work night/school night. But I appreciate others may view it differently.

In fairness, there are 82 games in a basketball season versus 17 in the NFL.   Missing a single late season (the NBA is only midseason) NFL game is considerably more impactful.

Quote from: H-Town G-Fan on March 27, 2024, 02:04:52 PMNabers with a 4.35... dang.

I know a lot around here like Odunze, but I think Nabers fits the modern-offense WR role very well. Contested catch receivers give me hesitation--though Odunze is also extremely athletic. However, given what the Bills did with Stefon Diggs, I would not be surprised (nor upset in the least) if they drafted Nabers. You can't ignore a talent like him just because you might already have Wan'Dale in the fold.

He is the same size as OBJ and the Giants had no problem playing OBJ on the outside

Quote from: andrew_nyGiants on March 27, 2024, 12:33:43 PMAddressed the offensive line?

To me this feels like past off-seasons where we were all so thirsty for a functional OL that we got excited over middling signings.

I think most of those signings were depth, and that we still need Day 1 & day 2 OL.

I am at a point where I will believe that the O-line is fixed when I SEE it is fixed.   As for throwing more draft resources, they already have 2 high first-rounders, a 2nd rounder, a 3 rounder, a 5th rounder, and a bunch of just-signed free agents.   I am not sure if throwing yet more resources will actually fix the problem.

That said, it wouldn't shock me to see one of the 6 picks being an offensive lineman (I would be surprised if it's in round one, but any other round).  Likely that would be a guard or a lineman with guard/tackle flexibility
