No surprises this year Ceri.  Rare.

If we get BPA at QB, WR, RB, G, CB and S, that would satisfy my desire.  Maybe sub out one for 3 tech DT.

Quote from: kingm56 on Today at 09:37:17 AMYeah, Jess is right more than he's wrong and has been accurate with most of his analysis over the last few years.  However, on this rare occasion, I disagree with him.  To date, Neil has demonstrated poor twitch and lateral speed, which are areas that don't improve with time.  I believe there's a real possibility he moves to Guard in an effort to minimize the aforementioned shortcomings. He will always be a liability against speed edge rushers.

You and Jess are two of my favorite posters here.  Neal simply does not get to the ideal spot to block a player at the most optimal time.  I am not sure if it is lateral quickness or slow processing once the snap is made but that part of his game has not improved and I don't think it can.  He may be better off as you noted to be inside in a more confined space.

Quote from: MightyGiants on Today at 09:09:46 AMJoe,

In fairness, there is a goldmine of great information available via Podcasts.  You just need to know the ones worth listening to.

Here are some of the ones I like to listen to:

Ones involving former NFL

GM Shuffle with former GM Mike Lombardi
Russ Tucker Football Podcast with former player Ross Tucker
The Athletic's Football Podcast with former GM Randy Mueller
Simms Complete with Phil Simms and his son Matt
Move the Sticks with Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks
Bleav in Giants with Carl Banks

Podcasts of Giants Beat Writers

Locked on Giants with Pat Traina
Blue Rush with Paul Schwartz
Breaking Big Blue with Jordan Raanan
All In with Art Stapleton
Talking Ball with Pat Leonard
Giants Insider with Chris Biz

Podcast of mega Giants fans (fans that know the Xs and Os)

Talkin Giants with Bobby Skinner and Jason Pennick
Big Blue Banter Podcast with Nick and Dan

Thanks Rich for the list.  I know for example that the podcast by the Freakonomics guys is very good.  My problem is that I just simply can't hear a monologue for so long especially when the hosts "insert" their personality into the conversation in the hope of making it more colorful.

My father had a great quote which he seared into his us which was "you have one mouth and two ears and you should use them in that proportion."

Quote from: MightyGiants on Today at 08:54:58 AMI remember hearing HOF GM Bill Polian talk about how they developed an injury grade where various injuries were given scores and all those injuries (during their career before being drafted) were added up to develop a score.   Joe Schoen's rather detailed answer on this issue suggests Ronnie Barnes and his crew take a very different approach.

Q. Has Michael Penix Jr. acquitted all concerns or possible concerns about his injury history in your mind? Then kind of a follow-up to that would be are you more reticent sent now than maybe a year ago to take a chance on a guy who has an injury history, or is it the same as it ever was?

JOE SCHOEN: I think we always take that into account. We have to listen to our medical professionals. We've unfortunately had some issues with injuries the last couple years since I've been here. You want to stray away from injury risks the best you can. I am not going to get into specifics on Michael, it's well documented the injuries he had while he was at Indiana, but he has been healthy at Washington and played two full seasons there.

A lot of times those are indicators. Even if it's not — again, we'll go back to John Smith. He had an ACL his sophomore year, but it hasn't swelled up and he hasn't missed any games or had to aspirate it or anything like that. You usually lean on how the patient responds to those surgeries and how they perform.

We had our medical meeting Monday night. We didn't lose too many people. That's always a scary meeting for us because which one of these players that we love are going to be disqualified because of medical or they advise that we don't take them. We didn't lose a lot of players this year luckily.

My concern is not swelling this soon after his surgery but say a bit further out.  That is when the effects of being injured may rear their ugly head.

Brother - Our society has devolved into a need for hearing opinions instead of news.  Ugh!!!!

Ha Ha listening to that is why I simply don't listen to podcasts.  To hear one person talk so much are like fingernails on a blackboard.  No news, just an opinion.

Quote from: MightyGiants on Today at 08:35:46 AMFrom what I have seen, teams find a way to keep their best players.  If the player is mediocre, or maybe just a bit above average, they will let them walk.  However, if they are happy with their first-round pick, they almost always sign them to a second contract (it's not like free agency is a bounty of great players).

What I would argue is that I don't think draft success and failure is all that dependent on the position drafted.  Rather, I believe it's dependent on the team doing the drafting.  Poor teams tend to draft and develop prospects poorly, while good teams do the opposite.

I also think that to really drill down to meaningful stats, you need to break this out by the top and bottom half of the first round.   Take WR; top 10 drafted WRs tend to perform better than the rest of round-one receivers.

Rich - what about all those DTs the Giants failed to sign in their second contracts?  Guys like Barry Cofield, Linval Joseph, etc.  I think the Giants decided to make choices but those guys seemed to have played good enough to earn a second contract.

Quote from: Jclayton92 on April 23, 2024, 06:03:22 PMHe actually was coming along in year 2 even with the injuries. I think our oline coach was horrible for him. I think he'll balance out as a solid tackle. Just our line makes people look worse than they are and that's happened for years now.

Where did you see him coming along?  If he improved so marginally but from such a deep hole I don't think it matters at all.

What does this statistic prove?  I think it's intent is to show success rate/fail rate by position but it completely ignores a team's budget at the time a player at a position might be due for their second contract.  Maybe the team is in cap hell and can't sign him however in FA another team can. Does that mean the player was a failure?  I don't think so. Maybe I am missing something.

Quote from: Jclayton92 on April 23, 2024, 05:09:38 PMI get that, but we will never be able to field a competent team if everyone doesn't give the people we do draft time to get. Neal has barely played a full season and he's a bust, Ezeudu has played multiple positions never really being able to develop in one spot. They need time.

J - Neal looked worse than any 1st round I have ever seen play. He was completely whiffing on blocks multiple times in year 2.  The coaching staff would be negligent to assume he comes around.  Plan for worst and get surprised if better.

Quote from: Jclayton92 on April 23, 2024, 03:27:11 PMBut why? We have holes everywhere, if we've solved the line, let's solve another problem.

Nobody knows if the OL problems have been solved yet and if not we lose half the team's ability plus stress the D.  I am not convinced Neal will be the starting RT so assume Ele is there and Runyon is one of the two guards.  That leaves the hole at other guard.  Eze and McKethan are not starters.

Quote from: spiderblue43 on April 23, 2024, 01:53:41 PMThey need a great boundary receiver..go up..get it talent. Odunze is an obvious choice

They do for sure.  I am not sure it has to be a 6'2" or 6'3" size WR.  Remember Hakeem Nicks was only 6'0" and OBJ was only 5'11" and they played X.  Both could as you said "go up and get it."  Odunze is logical for sure.  So is Brian Thomas.

Malik Nabers has the hands and explosiveness to go up to get it.  My question continues to be with him is how much of his LSU production was from the X as opposed to the slot?  I read in multiple places he played slot 50% of the time.  If his production was 70% out of only 50% from the slot, that would not be a good fact.

Brian Thomas is no consolation so long as he develops his route running to an NFL quality level.  If he does that, he may be better than the Big 3.

Quote from: MightyGiants on April 23, 2024, 11:45:58 AMThis reminds me of the Brandon Beane quote about moving up to draft Josh Allen:

"I mean, we got criticized a little bit for how much we gave up for Josh. And I'm like, 'Well, if he doesn't work out, I'm not going to be here anyway. And if he does work out, nobody's gonna give a s–t,'" said Beane

That quote is what got me thinking of how Schoen views his future tenure.
