Title: Will Any of the 2017 NYG Coaches Be Retained?
Post by: Suburbanites II on January 12, 2018, 12:27:01 PM
Well we're down to the final three with Matt Patricia clearly in the lead which begs the question will anyone from the existing coaching staff be retained and if so who?

Here's a look at the staff with my comments.

Steve Spagnulo/DC- This is the most interesting one, a carry-over DC working for a new HC who was a DC. I don't thinks so and it doesn't help that the Giants D nosedived this past season. On the other hand Spags has had very successful Giants defenses in the past and as recently as last season, still I don't think he stays.

Mike Sullivan/OC- Didn't wait to find out, now the WR Coach for the Broncos.

Mike Solari/Offensive Line-I know he had a good reputation coming into the Giants job but the OL was bad under him, I say no way he's retained.

Lunda Wells/Asst. OL Coach-He too will likely not be retained.

Frank Cignetti/QB Coach - All ready ran to the hills, now the QB coach for the Packers.

Adam Henry / WR Coach-Just landed the same job with the Browns.

Kevin M. Gilbride/ TE Coach-This one is interesting as he did a pretty decent job and Engram's continued development is very important, I'm going to say he is retained.

Craig Johnson/RB Coach - The run game improved this past season, he's got a shot of staying.

Ryan Roeder/Offensive Assistant - These lower end coaching jobs go to guys with a relationship with the HC, he'll be replaced.

Tim Walton - Secondary Coach Cornerbacks - Eli Apple alone will prevent Walton from being retained.

Dave Merritt/Secondary Coach Safety's- Decent coach and has been around since 2004, he'll have an opportunity to stay.

Bill McGovern/LB Coach- This guy had absolutely nothing to work with this past season, I hope he's given an opportunity to stay, would like to see him with NFL caliber linebackers.

Patrick Graham/Defensive Line - Also left for GB.

Rob Leonard/Asst DL Coach - Cut his teeth as the defensive assistant, who knows maybe they'll let him interview, probably gone.

Bobby Blick/Defensive Assistant - Again, these types of roles usual go the patronage route.

Tom Quinn/ST Coach - Could you imagine the outcry if he was retained? Old friend Larry Izzo is available and he has a relationship with MP.

Dwayne Stukes/Asst ST Coach- Doubtful he's retained, the new STC will want to hire his own guy.

Aaron Wellman/S&C Coach - After being regaled in '16 for his "methods" which were credited with a healthy roster the Giants returned to being a MASH unit. I have no idea what will happen here.

So in summary, I think the ones with the best opportunity to carry-over are Merritt, McGovern, Johnson and Gilbride. I didn't see where any of these guys had past relationships with any of the final three.

The only one I see staying is Merritt. Likely it’s a clean house.

I don't see any coach still employed by the Giants that is really worth keeping with the possible exception of Wellman (most of the injuries this past season had little do with his work).

On a side note-   With Sullivan and Cignetti gone, there is now no one in the building who can attest to Webb's development in practice.

Except for Eli who I'd ask immediately if I was the new HC.

I had hoped Graham and Gilbride jr would both stay. Graham has gome so that just leaves me with one. Sure Gilbride jr may well have got his job on the staff because of his Dad but his track record of developing both WR's and TE's whilst with us proves without a doubt he can coach effectively and adapt to doing so in two very different schemes.

I would probably keep Gilbride Jr. He's done some solid work. However, depending on who they bring in? It could be a clean sweep.

If the Giants can draft a QB because he is a coach's son, why not a coaching assistant.   :D

Depends on the HC, but I'd lean towards letting them all go.  Clean slate, no baggage - everyone starts new for '18.  Good and bad - no more credit for the past either, you're being graded for what you do starting in '18 and only for '18.

Wellman is the only coach I could make a case for retaining. The rest of the Staff will hit dah bricks, fair or not.
if I'm the new HC, I want nothing to do with the previous staff.  the New Broom will be a sweeping.

I think there will be a number of coaches who stay.  I expect a new OC and DC but I don't think you see position coaches cleared out with head coaching changes in most cases.  Some may leave if they are offered positions on other teams.  A guy like Solari has a tremendous amount of respect throughout the business.  Just can't see a new HC wanting to jettison a guy like that unless he has someone particular in mind.

Seems like a lot will depend on who the HC is.  For example, if it's Shurmur I would think he would have a specific person in mind for OC and maybe a position or two, like a QB coach.

And much to my chagrin, I expect Quinn to be there next year as well.

If it's Shurm I could see Spags brought back.  Shurm is an OFFENSIVE head coach who will need a DC with autonomy to run the D. Not simply a playcaller.

what if the new HC wants to run a 3/4 defense, can we do it?

Gutted. But pleased for Kevin. Seems teams agree with my assessment.Bears building a great coaching staff with an emphasis on teaching. If only they had some talent at TE to teach...
