Big Blue Huddle / Elite and Franchise
December 13, 2023, 09:31:25 AM
We toss these terms around a lot when we talk about QBs.  But what exactly do we mean?

So, if I say the top X QBs are elite and the top Y QBs are franchise QBs, what are X and Y for you?

Big Blue Huddle / A Tale of Two Halves
September 18, 2023, 02:03:52 PM
It was the worst of times, it was the best of times,it was a half of bewilderment, it was a half of brilliance, it was a time of incompetence, it was a time of dominance, it was a period of the winter of despair, it was a period of the springtime of hope. (with apologies to one of my favorite authors, Charles Dickens)

https://static.www.nfl.com/gamecenter/b07cc4d6-f053-11ed-b4a7-bab79e4492fa.pdf

This is a link to the NFL Gamebook for the game.  For those unfamiliar with Gamebooks they are produced by the NFL for every game and contain a detailed breakdown of the game from stats to play by play listing.  One of their best features is they not only do stats for the whole game they do stats for the first Half's.  Which then allows you, with a little effort, to infer the second half stats.

D.Jones 26/37 321yds 3 sacks for 9 yards 2TDs 58 yd longest play 1INT 103.5PR
First half:
D.Jones 9/16 62yds 2 sacks for 6yards 0TDs 12 yd longest play 1INT 39.1 PR

From which we infer for the second half:  17/21 259 yds. 2 TDS 0INT 149.8 PR

Or, on the defensive side of the ball:

15 players had
42 solo tackles
15 assisted tackles
54 total tackles
0 sacks
7 TFL
6 QB hits
2 pass defenses

In the first half:

4 (!?!) players had
19 tackles all solo
2 TFL
1 QB hit
0 pass defenses

For folks like me that like to study and play with the numbers it is a gold mind of info.

Factoid: they got 235 of their yards on their 10 biggest plays, including 4 plays of 25+ yards, 4 on plays between 15 and 25 and 2 14 yard plays.

Big Blue Huddle / Cowboy YouTuber deep dive into Giants D
September 09, 2023, 06:02:52 AM
I thought this was an interesting, reasonably balanced, look at the match-up between the Cowboys offense and the Giants defense.

Big Blue Huddle / Over/Under on P/R ratio
September 04, 2023, 02:08:41 PM
Last year the Giants were the very epitome of a balanced offense, 520 pass attempts and 520 runs.

Will that change?  And by how much?

With 55% passing as the mark, do you pick the over or under?

Big Blue Huddle / Skinner profile and projection on DJ
September 01, 2023, 01:23:05 PM
This is long, but well worth the listen, IMO.  On the profile side they do a pretty deep dive and some of the stats they bring out are pretty remarkable, such as his performance when he's pressured.  And the fact that he is arguably the best QB in the league on second down, where his completion percentage is well into the 70s and his YPA is 8.1 vs, 6.4 on the other downs.  On the projection side they are upbeat but still pretty sober.  I liked it.

Big Blue Huddle / NGT: Jimmy Graham arrested
August 20, 2023, 10:50:08 PM
https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/38221254/medical-episode-led-arrest-tight-end-jimmy-graham

This is a very strange story, to me.  He gets arrested on suspicion of being on a controlled substance and obstruction of a police officer.  He gets taken to a hospital for observation and evaluation.  The Saints' team Dr. swoops in and says he believes it was a seizure and takes control of his care.  He is released the next day, returns to training camp.

I may be an overly suspicious guy, but everything about this, at least the was ESPN wrote it, is very strange to me.  Why would the team Dr., an interested party, be involved in overseeing his care as opposed to just monitoring it.  To me, overseeing his care implies a higher degree of involvement than monitoring his care.  He says he believes it was a seizure, but what does the hospital's attending physician say?  Even if it was a seizure, it was significant enough to cause him to become so disoriented and erratic in his behavior that he was arrested.  And one night in the hospital was enough?  You'd think there would be batteries of tests to try to determine the cause of the seizure.

I have no particular medical knowledge but a cursory google survey indicates that an adult seizure with no prior history generally has something to do with the brain, a point on which I hope some of our members who do have medical knowledge will weigh in on.  In a league that is trying to be very protective of players (or at least tries to convey that image) wouldn't someone with an unaccounted for seizure be put into something analogous to concussion protocol while they try to figure out why it happened?  And what the risk might be going forward?

It could all be completely innocent and my suspicions may turn out to be based on bad reporting/writing on the part of ESPN, but it is a strange story.

The Front Porch / Old dog takes on new trick
July 30, 2023, 09:29:50 PM
I have gotten the point, due to a combination of mobility and discomfort, that I seriously doubt that I will ever get on an airplane again.

But a chance conversation got me thinking about traveling a longish distance on a train.  As is my wont, these days, I went off to YouTube to research the ins and out of riding the rails on Amtrak.  My sister lives in St. Louis and had dispaired of me ever visiting because of my no-fly stance.

But after doing my research I just booked round trip tickets from Flagstaff AZ (like most big cities Phoenix has a Union station but ours is no longer used for trains) to St. Louis.  It a 2-segment trip.  The long segment is Flagstaff to Kansas City, about 26-1/2 hours, and for this segment I will be in a sleeper car in a Roomette.  After a 9 hour layover in KC, the second segment will be Kansas City to St. Louis, about 5-1/2 hours, and will be in a coach seat.

The return trip takes a different route, going through Chicago.  The short leg of STL to CHI is about 5 hours, and I will be in a business class seat.  After a 3 hour layover in CHI there is the long leg back to Flagstaff, which is almost 30 hours.  On this leg I will be in a coach seat, as sleepers had been sold out.

So I'll find out if I can sleep on a train in a reclining coach seat.  This is not as daunting as it might seem for a couple of reasons.  First, the seats are huge compared to airline seats and reclining them (which I never do on an airplane - even in first class) is fine with no issue.  Second, several years back, after some health issues and a surgery, I spent over a year sleeping in my recliner at night rather than a bed, with no problems.  And if it works out it will open up traveling to me again.

I'm guessing that on this board some of you have done some long range train travel, so if you have any advice, tips, tricks, don't do this or that thoughts, they would be most welcome.

Big Blue Huddle / NFT: It Ain't Over
June 04, 2023, 02:15:20 AM
There is a recent documentary playing in a limited theater release called "It Ain't Over" about the late great Yogi Berra.  I'm wondering if anyone has seen it and can say how good it is.  The nearest place to me that it's playing at is an hour away and I'm a little torn between making the drive or waiting for it to hit streaming.  Recommendations appreciated.

This is a very interesting video from J.T. Sullivan, former NFL backup QB, who has a YouTube channel and much more called The QB School.  I've posted a couple of his videos before.  Someone posted a video of Jones' best plays and someone else said they'd like to see a video of his worst plays.  This isn't that, but there were a lot of unsuccessful plays in the Philly playoff game.  Sometimes it is Jones' fault, sometimes it's the route or execution of the route, sometimes it is a good play.  Anyway, I'm not an X&O guy but I found it well worth the time to watch it.  You may too.

QuoteSome have wondered whether the new owner of the Washington Commanders will change the team's name. Again.

The new owner might have no choice. Via trademark attorney Josh Gerben on Twitter, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has denied the trademark application for the name "Commanders."

This is a video looking at Daboll's offensive scheme from a relatively new YouTube channel that seems pretty legit.  2 former NFL O-Line breaking down plays to an extreme degree.  It is not a Giants-centric channel, and I think they haven't fully found their feet, but I thought it was pretty good.

I found this video interesting and informative.  Dottino certainly doesn't have comprehensive inside info but as an in-house guy he does get exposed to things that beat reporters don't.  Some takeaways:  he was hearing that the Giants planned to not draft more than 8 guys, and also planned to trade up opportunistically.  He tells the story of the move up for Banks as the cluster of players the Giants were looking at flew off the board, but unlike the Eli Apple fiasco they had contingency plans.  Why Schoen didn't trade up for Schmitz.  How a bunch of guys were on the phone looking for a team to trade up with in round 3 and Daboll was the one who clicked.  It's less than a half hour and well worth a watch.

Big Blue Huddle / NGT: On a related note
February 13, 2023, 12:09:42 AM
I thought that was the worst set of commercials during the Super Bowl ever.  It seemed like every one was either stupid or boring.  I can't think of a single one that showed any wit or had entertainment value.

Kellen Moore and the Cowboys are parting ways.  If Kafka gets an HC job is Moore someone the Giants should take a hard look at?
