Big Blue Huddle / The Bright Side
October 16, 2023, 07:34:54 AM
If the Chargers can take care if business tonight, the Giants will not play a team that is currently above 0.500 until Christmas.

This team looked like less of a mess last night and players are starting to come back from injuries. There is an opportunity to turn this around. This is the window in the season where they had to grab some wins.

Some of these guys are still recovering from injuries and could wind up on PUP or IR-Return to start the season. This is how I see it at the moment, if all were ready to play Game 1.

Roster Locks
Wan'dale Robinson – 2nd Round pick returning from season ending injury in 2022
Parris Campbell – High profile FA Signing
Jalin Hyatt – Fred Biletnikoff Award Winner that the Giants traded up to get

Roster Likely
Darius Slayton – A familiar and trusted target for Daniel Jones with no guaranteed money in 2024 – essentially in a contract year.
Sterling Shepard – returning from season ending injury in 2022.
Isaiah Hodgins – priority FA signing in February.

On the Outside Looking in - Veterans who could stick with an injury or two
Jeff Smith – Had his moments with the Jets but that was always due to injuries to those in front of him on the depth chart. Only 26, he has the speed to be a KO returner. That said, kickoff returners are quickly becoming a position teams will no longer need with recent rule changes.
Jamison Crowder – Has been a high volume, productive receiver when healthy. Again, when healthy.
Jaydon Mickens   - He could be closer to a roster spot than any of us think. Returned punts for JAX last season. Hard to believe he is now in his 7th season after going undrafted. Outperformed expectations everywhere he has been.

On the Outside looking in - Need to Show Something on Special teams or for Practice Squad consideration
David Sills – has already made the roster once as a long shot.
Bryce Ford-Wheaton – Needs to make the team with a big preseason and Special Teams unless there are injuries ahead of him. I think the Giants would like to get him to the practice squad, if they can.

Camp Fodder unless they shine early
Collin Johnson – Great size. Hasn't shown much else consistently.
Kalil Pimpleton
Makai Polk

Note: I do not include Lawrence Cager in this list, who continues to try to move to TE.  The Giants signed him early in free agency to retain him so they must see something they like, but they traded for Waller a month later. So, Cager could be on the outside looking in. Depending how he is developing as a TE, he is the most capable backup for Waller's skill set. If the Giants decide to keep three TEs, he may have an edge over Sweeney and Jones, or they might try to sneak him back to the practice squad.

For me, going into free agency the Giants Needs were
1. WR
2. Interior Line
3. LB
4. DB
5. DT

Now it feels more like,
1. DB (particularly Safety)
2. Interior Line
3. DT
4. WR
5. RB depth

I don't watch the pundits or read the articles of the experts on their opinions. This is just a Giants fan's view from afar. How do you see it?

43 years ago today, Viktor Tikhonov replaced Vldislav Tretiak with backup goaltender Vladimir Myshkin immediately after the USA Hockey Team scored a second goal near the end of the first period. That move, replacing the goalkeeper widely considered the best in the world, shocked players on both teams. Tikhonov later identified this as the "turning point of the game" and called it "the biggest mistake of my career", and it set the stage for one of the greatest moments in US sports history.

Do you believe in miracles?

I don't know if they want one, but I am just wondering if that is an option.

I posted this in another topic, but it really doesn't fit there. Fire away!

Here is my best guess for needs and selections

TE

Is this anything other than terminology to distinguish between 3 wide outs, or is there specific patterns/responsibilities for each?

I had asked this question before and received terriffic responses and realized many had the same lack of understanding of what these terms mean that I did. I want to say GiantJason and Painter gave great insight.
