The Front Porch / Re: Total eclipse 2024
March 27, 2024, 02:50:40 PM
I bought a dozen glasses and handed them out to my kids and grandkids. I'm taking a load of grandkids about 75 miles straight north to be in the dead center of the path...depending on the weather. If it's cloudy east of Lake Ontario, I'll just go straight up to Oswego, or head towards Rochester if it's the only way to get a clear sky. Either way, it's going to be totally dark, but I'd like to see the ring of fire around the black moon. I have to leave a couple of hours early because of the traffic expected on Route 81. Newspapers are saying the highways are going to be packed. Really hope there are no accidents that make me sit on the highway for long periods of time...that would suck! Been there, done that. Schools are closing (because they know kids aren't coming to school anyway) and people will be traveling north in droves. Even the hotel rooms are all booked (which I don't need one)

Funny thing that I read a few days ago. "Beware of wild animals", they get all out of sync with their body when it's totally black when it's unexpected and act strangely. They are known to attack people...LOL...go figure. At least we don't have lions and other dangerous animals around here

First time Upstate New York will get a full eclipse in a hundred years. Pretty sure I won't be around the next time there's a full blackout eclipse. I'll take photos and share here

IMO - and I used to argue with my wife (now ex), was that we don't "own" our children other than we're responsible for raising them to respect others, become responsible adults, and to strive to be their best, etc. My argument was always that our kids are "individuals", and they will carve out their own life however they want. We can either embrace their decisions and get to be part of their lives until we die, or we can attempt to run them after they are adults and eventually be no part of their lives

The hardest thing for my wife to grasp, was that our kids - even though she gave birth to them - are "individuals", and trying to live our lives through them will only drive them away. They will make mistakes, just like we did. But at some point, you have to let them go to do their own thing and adults having supporting parents is the most important thing empty-nesters can give their adult children

I haven't spent a lot of time studying QBs, mainly because I'm inadequate to do so and also because I believe the Giants are going with DJ for at least one more year

But watching that video, Nix seems to have excellent body positioning while throwing the ball and seems very accurate. Of course, it's all staged, so he should look good. Not a real game

However, his stats from last season jump out at me (I haven't bothered to check stats on any of the QBs prior to this). In the 2023 season, he threw for 4,508 yards, 45 TDs, and 3 Int. That's pretty remarkable, even at the college level

Just a heads-up should you give this movie a shot. The funny thing about "Poor Things", when polled to people who had to rate it 1 through 5, it was all 1's or 5's, with 5 wining out about 53-47 over the 1's. It's a love it or hate with nothing really in between

One guy who watched it said he loved it so much he now claims it as his favorite movie of all time. On the other hand, he also said he likes "weird, dark comedy-dramas" and prior to this movie, his favorite of all time was "A Clockwork Orange", which lets off the same kind of vibe IMO

I watched "Poor Things" on Hulu last night, starring Emma Stone. Weird is an understatement - creepy might be a better definition. Black and white film (for the first part, as they pulled a Wizard of Oz color switch later into the movie). Basically a new version of Frankenstein mixed in with a healthy dose of,"The Island of Dr. Moreau" (putting human minds in animals and experimenting with crossing animals) and a whole lot of porn...including full-frontal nudity and lots of explicit sexual acts that were more graphic than I expected - or cared to see. I'll say this much, Emma Stone is quite a good actress, and she went all in, for her performance. To call her "daring" doesn't begin to define her carefree attitude with nudity, masturbation, straight sex, lesbian sex, etc, on the big screen

Synopsis: Mid-20's age girl (Emma Stone as Bella Baxter), who has been returned to life by swapping out her brain with a baby's brain (her own baby as she was 9 moths pregnant, who didn't die with her). So she has to learn everything a baby does, only in an adult body. After running away and going to Lisbon, France, and back to London, she has pretty much figured out life and how to live as an adult...that is, once she gets over her obsessive interest in her sexuality that she discovers quite by accident. Like a kid who has found his favorite toy that he didn't know existed

I would not suggest it unless you're into heavy erotica mixed with Frankenstein. I was going to give up on it after 10 minutes, but then had nothing else to watch or do, so I ended up watching the whole thing. The fact that I'm still thinking about it this morning tells me it was a disturbing movie I won't forget...even if I want to, LOL. The ending was great and therefore, worth it I guess. Critics loved it and Emma won an Oscar for her performance, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's good. Most flicks that get rave reviews in Hollywood are rarely bearable to watch - unless, of course, you are entirely into analyzing acting performances

Quote from: AZGiantFan on March 26, 2024, 03:40:30 PMMaybe the Giants not showing interest is part of their smokescreen.
Every move, every single word uttered, and every rumor (purposely leaked or by fan speculation)...it's all smoke. We won't find out what's on their minds until draft night...well, and the next two days

Pratt has really been hiding in the wings. He could be a steal for some team. I'd be surprised if the Giants drafted a QB, but if they did, I would expect it to be someone like Pratt in the 3rd or 4th round. Good size, great arm...seems he has the right mental aptitude. Only thing holding him back from the same discussions with Nix and Pennix is he comes from a small school

Good point. The Center is the "communicator of the line" and plays a key role apart from hiking the ball and blocking

I got thinking about structures of tunnels, and it appears that all tunnels are cylindrical, like the shape of a pipe. Besides the concrete structure, they are reinforced with steel ribs, sorta like whales and their ribs that sometimes go close to 2 miles deep. Makes me feel a little better when driving a mile underwater in the Chesapeake Bay...lol

Doing this for my own benefit as I have a phobia of tunnels and have never researched it. I always thought I'd be afraid to go through the Chunnel from England to France...now, not so much

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Full list of rule changes

Rule change 5 could be impactful. It will be weird when flags are thrown on both the offense and defense, but only the offense gets penalized...third down only...I think  :-??

Super glad they are going to monitor the clock and check replays

The new kick-off rules will (I think anyway) cause the biggest change in the game. I think teams will be starting much closer to midfield if they return a kick. Going to make it important that teams have a kicked with a huge leg that puts it out of the end zone

Anytime I see the word "Iowa" and "Offensive Line", I know that it is top shelf. Of course, it's his brother coaching the O-line there, but hopefully, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree and the family gets along well and indulges on their secrets to each other

Quote from: T200 on March 26, 2024, 10:34:06 AMWe splurge on creature comforts; as empty nesters with two grandkids, we sold our home three years ago and went bigger. More rooms, more living space, more land. My wife loves decorating and I love technology.

My current splurge is bowling balls and bowling tournaments :P

As soon as I retire in three years, we'll be joining Len and Doris on some cruises!  :ok:

Now that you have more room, you can do like Terry Bradshaw did in the movie "Failure to Launch", where he went "full Monty" in his new "naked room", the one thing he wanted after the kids moved out...LMAO

Incredible video and commentary. My first thought is the possibility of a terror attack. The big question, "Why did the ship lose all it's electronics just as it entered the underpass?"

One positive note, is that it occurred at about 1:30 AM so the bridge wasn't packed with traffic. What a nightmare for drivers at that time. I noticed an 18-wheeler that appears to have just made it across in time

The main structure looks to be very strong according to using triangles, but there is only one support for that stretch of overhead. Once that support is gone, it now relies on the "H-Style" supports on both sides of it. Seems to me, anyway, that it is an engineering design mistake

Personally, I don't feel comfortable going across major bridges. There is a bridge over the Susquehanna River between the J.C. traffic circle and Binghamton University. Whenever traffic has stopped, and I'm on the bridge, I can feel myself going up-and-down and back-and-forth. Not a good feeling! I've studied the structure of that bridge and I don't like it

I've read that there are response teams on both sides of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge because of people freaking out and can go no further. They find drivers on the floorboard of their cars, sometimes in a fetal position praying their hearts out. They have to be rescued. Happens several times a week I guess. I've been over that bridge multiple times and it doesn't bother me. The tunnel portion is something that I fret about though because you can't see the structure of it as it holds back enormous tons of pressure  :o

Now I'm in my "engineering mode" and will share this last bit of potential interest

When constructing long structures holding large signs that are subject to incredible winds at times, you never see one of these structures fail...even in hurricanes when buildings around the same area are reduced to rubble. Lightweight triangle structures are the heart of architects' arsenal of understanding strength. Notice that these gantries over highways don't even sag

For the last 50 years of my life, I cannot help myself but to always look at the structure overhead signs on highways as well as bridges. It's innate to me. Actually fascinating...to me anyway

Even the support columns are built with triangles

Imagine the force of wind against these signs
