The Front Porch / "She is not good enough for him"
March 27, 2024, 11:05:23 AM
Since it's slow here I wonder if this sounds familiar to anyone.

When my mother got engaged, my father's two aunts told my mother she is not good enough for him because she is cross eyed.

When I got engaged to my current wife, my mother told me she is not happy. It was frustrating because I was 38 at the time. Did she want me to risk not finding love just to meet her standards?

My son got engaged last Christmas and my wife is unhappy about his choice. She feels he could do better. There are a number of reasons she feels that way. Whenever she comes over, she is quiet and seems like she doesn't want to be here. She only speaks when spoken to. She is not perfect but she is a good person and they get along well. I'm more open minded than my wife.

The Front Porch / Back Surgery or No Back Surgery?
March 09, 2024, 08:37:32 AM
Just wondering if you or someone you know was in a similar situation.

Six months ago, I developed pain in my hip. An x-ray showed my hip joint was OK.  I went for physical therapy and it slowly helped for the most part.  A month ago I developed sciatic nerve pain down my right leg. I was the approved for an MRI.

The MRI shows that I have Severe Inner Channel scoleosis in my lower back.  My spinal cord is very narrow between L4 and L5. It is being compressed by my backbone.

My spine doctor recommended surgery but he wants me to go home and think about it as it is a serious decision.

The surgery involves a rod and screws into my backbone between L4 and L5. There is a chance I will be in a lot of pain after surgery and recovery time is 3-4 months. There is no guarantee it will relieve the pain and pain relief could be 25%, 50% or 100%. There is a small chance or nerve damage during surgery or an infection.

Currently my pain profile has changed. I don't have shooting pain down my right leg to my foot but I have shooting pains from my lower back into both buttock areas. I would give the pain level a 3 out of 10. My right leg feels a little more numb and heavy footed than my left leg. It kind of feels a little asleep.  I'm afraid the pain may increase suddenly or the sciatica may come back. It's hard to sleep with sciatic nerve pain.  In the meantime, I'm still doing physical therapy.

I'm not going to make a decision off of your comments but your thoughts are welcome.

The Front Porch / What Irritates You?
February 17, 2024, 09:30:15 AM
Those intentionally ripped jeans bug me especially the ones that cost a fortune to buy.  It's ugly and makes no sense.

The slang word "sick" as in "That concert was sick".  What does sickness have to do with greatness?  Sick is something I associate with not feeling good.

The slang word "fire".  "That song was "fire".  Come on. Just say it was excellent.

My wife is a great person and I'm happy she is in my life. She's a talker and could use some patience. She has a habit of interrupting me because she can't wait for her turn.

The Front Porch / Should I change the oil?
February 16, 2024, 05:22:44 PM
Me and my wife are retired. We bought for her a new 2023 Honda CRV last April. The CRV has only 2600 miles on it. The maintenance schedule says change the oil every 7,500 miles or six months.

Today the Maintenance A light went on indicating an oil change is needed. Given the age of the oil at 10 months and the mileage of 2600 I am not sure of the best plan.

Change the oil at one year? Change the oil at 5000 miles instead of 7500? Or ask the dealer and probably be misguided.

Big Blue Huddle / Remember Aaron Robinson?
February 15, 2024, 09:50:19 AM
Has anyone been more forgotten? The Giants traded up in the third round to get him so he must have something going for him.

If he is 100% healthy, is he good enough to help the team?

I'm really upset by the firing of my boss today. He was the Director of Dining Operations at a local University.  He patiently waited in the wings for the Director job for several years and he got his promotion last year.

We use an outside food service contractor to manage the dining program as far as ordering food, supplies and managing the University's union workers. The food contractor onsite managers were not pleased with the promotion because my boss is unhappy with their performance and felt they overcharge the school on food and supplies. My boss did some digging to find replacement vendors for the near future. I will call the current company Company X.

Company X knows my boss is a bit of a jokester and says things to get a laugh. Company X knows that.  They came up with a plan to save their jobs. They filed a harrassment greivance with the school's Office of Equity and Inclusion stating my boss made them uncomfortable. I was present at two of the incidents as well as a Company X manager so I was interviewed by an investigator.

They were friendly digs aimed at me. They were benign. Nothing bad. We do that at each other. When my boss made those two jokes, I laughed and was not offended at all. During the interview I told them I was not offended in the least. I received an email 4 months ago from the investigator that the case is now closed.  My boss told me that his boss is on his side and he knows what Company X managers on campus are trying to pull.

Well this morning two security guards escorted him off the campus for good. His career and reputation may be over. I can't believe the school and the Office of Equity and Inclusion came to this decision. Are they trying to make an example of my boss? I don't know. Are they without courage? I don't know.  The threshold for dismissal should be much higher than this.

The Front Porch / Need new PC advice
December 27, 2023, 11:23:21 AM
My son bought me a new HP all in one computer. My old PC is 13 years old. It still works but it's slow. On the old PC I have Bitdefender and free Super Anti Spyware.

My son transferred Bitdefender to my new PC although it came with free McAffee for 30 days.

What do you recommend for best protection? Bitdefender or something else? Super Anti Spyware Free or something else?

Yeah, He should get his own place. He will do much better with the ladies. Not everyone knows that in traditional Italian families, the children are expected to live with the parents until they get married.

Now if the parents were raised in Italy, the pull is much stronger. I came to America from Italy with my parents in 1956. They were definitely old world.  In 1975 I was a senior in college. We were sitting at the dinner table one day and I started to share my future plans after graduation.  I said I want to find a good job and get my own apartment.  As soon as I said apartment, they started yelling at me. My father raised his hand like he was going to slap me.

To them getting an apartment is a complete waste of money. People who live in apartments are "bums" that don't have ambition, just want to have a good time and don't want to grow up.

By the way, my mother's chicken cutlets were excellent but her beef cutlets were even better.

The Front Porch / Do you like your mattress?
November 24, 2023, 01:52:34 PM
I'm in the market for a new mattress. So many choices. There is 100% memory foam, hybrid memory foam, traditional box spring with memory foam topper, traditional box spring, sleep number.

There are plenty of reviews online but nothing beats personal experiences of people you know.

What do you sleep on and why do you like/ dislike it?

The Front Porch / Have you ever been scammed?
November 07, 2023, 12:57:26 PM
It happened to me over the weekend.  Not a biggie but I hate it when people are tricked into something.

I decided to rejoin Netflix so I downloaded the Netflix app onto my Roku home screen. I clicked on the Netflix icon and a QR code image popped up on my screen. The writing at the top of the screen said "Log In With QR Code or With Your Phone" I decided to use the QR scanner on my phone and scan the QR image on my TV screen.

The screen on my phone then showed a link to Netflix at the top of my phone but the lettering was small and I ignored that. In the middle of the screen was a big box that said "Create an account in 3 easy steps". I assumed it was for Netflix so I clicked on the box. I didn't see the tiny letters that said ADVERTISEMENT.

The next screen asked for my name and credit card number so I entered all that and hit SEND. Turned out I joined a so called streaming service called FRAAVY.  It said enjoy your free trial.

I googled FRAAVY and found numerous complaints that people were tricked into signing up for FRAAVY without knowing. Several people complained that it was exteremely hard to contact them and cancel the membership. Someone said their credit card was immediately charged $49.95 and it turned out it is a monthly charge for what someone described as subpar content(movies, games, etc.)

I immediately logged into my credit card account and saw the $49.95 charge. Luckily my credit card company flagged it for possible fraud and asked me if was a valid charge. The credit card company must have known something based on previous complaints. I clicked no and they closed my account and will send me a new credit card.

I guess you can never let your guard down ever.

Big Blue Huddle / NGT: Does Miami need Tua to Tango?
October 09, 2023, 04:21:57 PM
Tua was pretty bad the first couple of years but he had good numbers the last two years. I know he had two bad throws yesterday but the team puts up a lot of points.

So is Tua a good quarterback or the product of having tons of weapons around him? Maybe Randy Dean could have made the pro bowl with that talent.

I'll be 70 soon and to tell you the truth, if someone told me I will no longer have sex for the rest of my life, it wouldn't bother me.  It's been a long time since I had "spring fever".

Whenever my wife says let's have a romantic evening, I get a little anxious because it's hard to get myself in the mood and I need to take that pill to get there.

Am I the exception or do a lot of you feel the same way?  You can PM me if you prefer not to share your story.

Big Blue Huddle / Wide Receiver Questions
May 12, 2023, 11:33:20 AM
If Darius Slayton regresses again in camp and the preseason due to dropping a lot of passes, would he get cut?

Can Hodgins still get open now that DC's may have studied his tape and will adjust accordingly.

Can Hyatt play the slot if Robinson is not ready at the beginning of the season?

What are the chances Shepard has similar quickness as he had 2 years ago?

If anyone didn't see it, I highly recommend it.

I knew social media giants like Facebook manipulate us but the degree and precision is amazing.  Our brains are no match against the engineers, AI and algorithims.  We are lab rats.

They gave a good analogy, magic tricks.  Magic tricks work because the magician knows how a piece of your brain works whereas you don't know how that piece of your brain works.

Here is the trailer below. It makes me want to cut back on Facebook.

The Front Porch / I guess I have heart issues
November 08, 2022, 02:44:23 PM
It all started several months ago when my blood pressure monitor detected irregular heart beats. I ignored it for a while until my wife said I should email my doctor. I did just that and shortly after a nurse called me and said I should go to the Emergency Department and get an EKG. I said I felt fine but she pressed me to go.

So I went to ED and they did an EKG and an x-ray of my heart. The EKG revealed PVC's or irregular heart beats. The x-ray showed nothing.

My sister in law works at the hospital and hooked me up with a good heart specialist. The heart specialist ordered a Holter Monitor for me and an ultrasound of the heart. After wearing the Holter Monitor and getting an ultrasound of my heart, I saw the heart specialist last week.

He confirmed I had PVC's and the Holter Monitor revealed I have 4% more heartbeats per minute than the average person. He also said I have a heart murmur.

The worst news is that my aortic artery has an aneurism. The average size of the aortic artery should be around 3.8. Mine is 4.5.  He said anything that is 5.something is bad.

He wants me to have a catscan in six months to see if the anuerism got bigger. In the meantime, no heavy lifting. My blood pressure is not ideal so he prescribed a beta blocker and upped my hydrochlorothiazide from 12.5mg to 25mg.

He said he is not overly concerned but wants to keep an eye on things.  I'm not frightened out of my mind but I do worry. I was always physically healthy. It's something I will have to get used to. I worry that my chances of reaching 90 years or more may be less likely now. I'm 68 right now.

Anyone have similar issues?

The Front Porch / The Barbecue Grill Thread
November 07, 2022, 08:53:22 AM
What is the best thing you grill? How do you cook it?

Do you have any advice on grilling such as types of seasoning?

I like a medium cooked porterhouse steak and salt it a little bit. When it is on my plate, I completely cover the steak with coarse black pepper. Yum. Someone told me the French do this as well.

The Front Porch / I lost a friend of 50 years. Am I wrong?
September 22, 2022, 01:35:03 PM
Either my friend is  mentally ill, a jerk or both.  Maybe I'm the jerk.  You decide.

Bob didn't have the best of childhoods. His mother was mean to him. She once threw him into a chair and he broke his arm. When he wouldn't stop crying, she slapped him and told him to shut up.  His two brother didn't treat him well. He grew up with a chip on his shoulder.

If someone wrongs him or does something bad, he/she is a jerk for the rest of his life. He holds grudges and regularly brings up stories about the time so and so did something to him. He is often bitter and is a woman hater.

Something set him over the edge several months ago.  He became very enamored with a waitress. They were flirty with each other for a few months. Bob asked her out and she said she is going through a divorce and shouldn't date until her divorce is finalized.  He kept pushing the issue of dating but she was elusive.  One day he pushed the issue and asked her to play golf.  She said her boyfriend doesn't feel comfortable with that.  Bob became furious because she lied about not being able to date and he felt led on. He was led on. As a matter of fact she flirted with him to make her cook boyfriend jealous.

This threw him into a serious depression and it brought back out repressed hurt feeling towards a girl that he loved in his twenties.  She broke up with him and did it in a cold way.

Since the incident with the waitress, I saw Bob about 20 times. Every time I saw him he would talk about the waitress and the girl that broke up with him 40 years ago. He would repeat stories about them over and over. I patiently listened to him.

Now the part about me and my wife. About 7-8 years ago my wife and I decided to scale back on my son's birthday parties. He was getting older and it was a lot of work. Bob was regularly invited to my son's birthday party but his interest was lukewarm. I don't think he liked one of my in-laws. Sometimes he came but sometimes he didn't.  I told Bob that we are only going to have family for his next birthday. I'm not sure what else I said. I thought he wouldn't care that much. He didn't react negatively but he was really mad inside. He was mad at my wife for not inviting him and he was mad at me for delivering that message. I think he was hurt because he felt he was part of the family. He dog sat our dog. He taught my son some car stuff and how to trade stocks.

Bob held onto these feelings for 6-7 years until he talked on the phone with my son. He told my son the story about how my wife stopped inviting him to his birthday parties and made my wife sound like a jerk.  I talked to Bob and told him we didn't mean to hurt his feelings and we explained the situation. I didn't have much of an effect.

Two weeks ago, my wife and I went to a funeral home to pay respects to someone. Bob was there and gave my wife the cold shoulder.  I felt bad about that and I didn't like him disrespecting my wife.

A few days later I texted Bob to try to resolve the situation. I should have done it in person but he is cranky and I didn't feel comfortable talking face to face with him. I probably should have. So he sends back a blistering text and brings up situations in the past where I supposedly did him wrong. He was mad that I didn't take him for his colonoscopy last fall. I couldn't because I was leaving for vacation that morning. He said "You could have delayed your vacation a couple hours to take me.". I said to myself, how does he know it would only delay me a couple hours?  We would have gotten to the hotel late and the day would have been lost.

He then brings up the fact that the last time I gave him a ride was 2010. Three times since then, he said he asked me for a ride and I wasn't available. I would have given him rides if I could. I worked full time and he was retired. He also accused me of asking him for rides when my wife and son were available. I never did that.

Bottom line is he will never forgive my wife for no longer inviting him to my son's birthday party and he will never forgive me for delivering that news.  Maybe it was dopey of me to do that but I meant no harm. He however thinks I'm a jerk because of that.

So basically he told me the friendship is over. So what does he do the next day? He calls our other friend and recounts what me and my wife did as well as recounting the waitress and ex-girlfriend story to him....for over an hour!

The Front Porch / The Vocabulary Builder Thread

I am oner of those people that like $50 words. I think Bob in PA also does. List your favorite $50 words here.  I'll start first.

Desultory:

1
Lacking a plan, purpose, or enthusiasm; (of conversation or speech) going constantly from one subject to another in a halfhearted way; unfocused.
2
Occurring randomly or occasionally.

Examples of Desultory in a sentence

"The conversation at the party became more desultory as the night wore on."

"Evelyn had a desultory habit of popping in on her friends unexpectedly."

A friend of mine told me to look into Greenhashes Cloud Mining. You can buy contracts of different amounts and duration. For example, a $1,550 contract for 2 months pays you $28/day income. This is too good to be true so I am very skeptical. What's the catch?

The Front Porch / Has anyone rented a vacation condo?
January 06, 2022, 10:58:05 AM
I read that Anna Maria Island in Florida is a quaint Old Florida island.  We are thinking about going there in October because it's off season.

I looked on VRBO, Airbnb and a few other sites and I didn't like the fact that they charge a lot for fees and taxes.  Is there a way to find a condo rental directly from an owner while feeling confident that we are not getting ripped off?

This is a serious article and I found it really interesting.  It looks at BSing from a psychological and social aspect.  I think anyone in corporate America would benefit from this read.

Here are some excerps:

I watched Come And Find Me starring Aaron Paul from Breaking Bad. Aaron played a regular guy that falls madly in love with someone.  They are living a happy life until she completely disappears. He is crushed and begins searching for her. He eventually finds out she has a double life. She is an operative for the US government. I was really enjoying this suspense movie until the ending. There really was no ending. It left what happened to them to your imagination. Grrr
