Hope springs eternal. At this time of the year, that's really all we have.

We can't say Schoen hasn't addressed it. We can't say Daboll hasn't addressed it from a coaching staff standpoint. It's up to the coaches to do their part in teaching and the players have to learn and execute.

I am definitely hopeful. The issue has not been ignored. Even though most of the new offensive linemen aren't flashy or top 10 signings, I care more about how they function as a unit. It's time for the rubber to meet the road.

Quote from: MightyGiants on March 27, 2024, 12:03:45 PMYes, I had never considered the point he made about how the O-line performance is essentially independent of the rest of the team.
OK.

It was and has been obvious to me for quite some time. It's why the trenches are considered the foundation. It all starts up front. If you have a weak foundation, you're probably going to have a weak team.

Quote from: MightyGiants on March 27, 2024, 12:00:22 PMThe man is an accomplished coach at the NFL and the college level.   Outside of Andy Reid, I can't think of a more accomplished head coach currently coaching in the NFL.
I wasn't challenging his credentials or his accomplishments.

Did you learn anything from that 1-minute clip?

Football 101. Nothing new here. He's the coach du jour so anything he says carries more weight. He could sell his own line of encyclopedia and people would jump all over it.

Ahhh, good ol' family dynamics. Some people hit it off right away and others take time to develop into good, solid relationships. There's some give and take required on both sides, mostly on the part of the family welcoming in the newbie. It's a delicate dance for a lot of people to get out of their comfort zones and accept people for their differences.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on March 26, 2024, 07:48:19 PMI'm going to take a contrarian viewpoint on this.

I don't really see an issue here myself. What exactly are people doing on Christmas afternoon? Presents and church services are all an AM/mid-day thing, no? I am not religious as an adult, but I did go to church and Sunday school as a kid, and I was confirmed. Never once in my life do I recall an afternoon on Christmas day being some big deal with lots of obligations. If anything, Christmas afternoon (2pm-6pm) was kind of dull. As a kid, I may have been busy playing with presents and what not, but the afternoon on Christmas day was not a stretch of time I remember either myself or my friends who observed the holiday having much in the way of concrete obligations. Why is having a football game going on then some big deal? I would actually welcome it. Even if you're an extremely religious Christian, what is so sacred at 3pm?
For me, it's not about the religious angle.

Personally, I won't watch even if the Giants are playing. It's about spending time with family. We have adult children and don't get to see them all the time. When they come to visit, the TV surely isn't on. We get to play with our grandkids and watch them have fun, take pictures and videos, and just live in the moment. Memories are made at Christmas.

What about the players, the coaches, the assistants, the stadium workers, security, etc., who can't spend the same time with their loved ones because of the greed of 32 billionaires who don't know the meaning of 'enough'?

There is no end to the greed.  :boooo:

The Front Porch / Re: Baltimore Bridge Collapse

Quote from: MightyGiants on March 26, 2024, 11:51:00 AMThe way I figure it, clearing navigation will take a couple of weeks (first, the search and rescue efforts need to finish) as they will need to get large floating cranes in the area to remove the debris.  I figure at most a month

Replacing the bridge will take years, probably 5 years, give or take a couple of years.

Baltimore is the biggest port of importing cars so likely car prices will take a short term hit
Not to mention, the Baltimore port is where servicemembers ship their vehicles through when going to and returning from overseas.

The Front Porch / Re: Splurging

We splurge on creature comforts; as empty nesters with two grandkids, we sold our home three years ago and went bigger. More rooms, more living space, more land. My wife loves decorating and I love technology.

My current splurge is bowling balls and bowling tournaments :P

As soon as I retire in three years, we'll be joining Len and Doris on some cruises!  :ok:

Quote from: AZGiantFan on March 25, 2024, 03:10:04 PMIt is not unreasonable to think that an OL can keep a QB upright for 17 games, but I think you are vastly underselling how horrific the Giants' line play was.  They were last in the league, giving up 5.0 sacks a game.  The next worst team gave up 3.8 sacks per game.  That's a huge difference.  Buffalo gave up sacks on 3.86% of drop backs and it was 4.04% for KC.  The Giants gave up sacks on 14.10% of drop backs.  That is a huge difference.

The last time a team has given up sacks on 14.10% of drop backs since 2011 is never.  It was rare for a team to give up 10% over that time span.  The last time a team has given up 5.0 sacks per game over that timespan is never.  Only twice in those years did a team give up 4 or more.

So the OL wasn't just not very good, it was historically unsurpassed in its badness in the last 13 years.
The likelihood of a QB not hitting the ground for 17 games is close to impossible. I didn't underestimate the line's futility. I just don't attribute the injuries to the QBs to the line.

How bad the Giants offensive line was, historically or otherwise, cannot be blamed for injuries.

They need to ban stiff arms too. Every advantage is being given to the offense. Take away stiff arms so defenders can tackle.

Quote from: babywhales on March 25, 2024, 10:46:30 AMRoster development is relative. You can win with either or neither, it all depends on the how the rest of the team is built.
I agree about roster development.

But give me the top 3 QB over the top 3 WR. If a defense doubles or otherwise neutralizes the top WR, the QB has other options. If the QB is having an off day, there's very little the top WR is going to be able to do to get that offense going.

Quote from: MightyGiants on March 25, 2024, 09:50:56 AMTim,

Didn't all three QBs get injured behind last year's line?
Yes. That doesn't equate to, "If the line was better, the QBs wouldn't have been injured."

Both Jones and Taylor have a history of injuries.

Quote from: spiderblue43 on March 25, 2024, 09:26:36 AMAgree Bob,

You can't pass on MHJ if you trade up. Trading up for a surefire star is acceptable, a McCarthy no.
What's more valuable to an offense: a top 3 QB or a top 3 WR?
