It is a position where you may not know until the Starter goes down. This year several backups had playing time.

December 24, 2022, 04:15:41 PM
The fumble by Bellinger.
The Daniel Jones Interception.
The blocked punt.
Calling an all out blitz that led to a reception and a 61 yard FG.

Exciting game though and very winnable. Some nice Performances. Just fell short after a comeback to tie the game.

These two may face each other again.

Big Blue Huddle / Dallas' remaining schedule
December 19, 2022, 12:23:04 PM
In the last three games Dallas faces the Eagles, the Titans who are trying to hold off the Jags and then Washington who will be playing for their season. Can the Giants run the table and surprise everyone while taking over second place?

The Front Porch / Vitamin D
December 17, 2022, 11:19:58 AM
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/06/well/live/vitamin-d-deficiency-winter.html?

If you live in a part of the country where winters are cold and gray, it's smart to think about how you'll get vitamin D — often called the sunshine vitamin — over the next several months.

Vitamin D is synthesized in the skin after exposure to the sun's ultraviolet B rays, and is crucial for calcium absorption and the maintenance of strong, healthy bones, said Julie Stefanski, a registered dietitian nutritionist and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Deficiencies, which are common worldwide, can cause soft, weak and brittle bones, leading to fractures. Your vitamin D status can also play a role in other aspects of health including inflammation, autoimmune disease risk, heart health and cognitive function.

Most healthy people with fair skin can typically produce enough vitamin D during the summer by exposing their faces, arms and legs to sunlight for about five to 10 minutes several times per week during midday, when the sun is highest and its UVB rays are most powerful, said Antony Young, an emeritus professor of experimental photobiology at the St. John's Institute of Dermatology at King's College London, via email. People who have more melanin, or darker pigmentation, in their skin need longer periods in the sun — in some cases 2.5 to three times as much, though it depends on your skin tone — because melanin reduces vitamin D synthesis....

In Today's N.F.L., Good Backups Pay Off (and Are Getting Paid)
Backup quarterbacks have been thrust into action at a high rate this season. A handful are keeping their playoff-bound teams afloat.

Rookie quarterback Brock Purdy led the 49ers to a win over the Dolphins last week after Jimmy Garoppolo broke his foot in the first quarter.

Before last Sunday, backup quarterbacks Tyler Huntley and Brock Purdy were mostly known by their nicknames, if they were known at all. Huntley's Ravens teammates called him "Snoop" because of his resemblance to the rapper Snoop Dogg. Purdy, drafted with the 262nd pick in April, was "Mr. Irrelevant."

No more.

Huntley replaced Lamar Jackson, who injured his knee, and led Baltimore to a come-from-behind 10-9 victory against Denver, securing the win with a 2-yard touchdown run on the game's final drive.

Purdy replaced Jimmy Garoppolo, who broke his foot on the 49ers' opening drive, and powered San Francisco to a 33-17 victory over the Miami Dolphins.

Both unlikely heroes are now essential to their playoff-bound teams, joining the ranks of a wave of backup passers who have kept their teams afloat after the starters went down. So far this season, 22 quarterbacks who were not first-string passers on opening day have started N.F.L. games, according to Pro Football Reference. That's the most through the first 13 weeks of a season since 2007, which saw the same number of backups starting.

In Dallas, Cooper Rush was 4-1 as a starter after Dak Prescott fractured his thumb in Week 1. In Washington, Taylor Heinicke is 5-1-1 since Carson Wentz injured a finger. The emergence of such second-teamers confirmed what Hall of Fame Coach Joe Gibb once said: "The second most important person on the team is the backup quarterback."

Backup quarterbacks have been thrust into action in an era of enhanced pass rush and as starting quarterbacks are increasingly called upon to leave the pocket to make plays. The most important player on a football team is also the most vulnerable, especially in a 17-game season.

In an instant, a backup goes from a helmetless sideline bystander to the focal point of an offense. What attributes prepare a player for that kind of whirlwind? Skills that can be improved, such as the ability to analyze the defensive tendencies of 17 opposing teams, along with intangibles that cannot be taught, like the poise and leadership to inspire teammates. Perhaps most importantly, backups need to keep their egos in check for weeks, seasons or even years and suddenly turn on the confidence to take over at a moment's notice.

Jets Coach Robert Saleh, who has called on backups Mike White and Joe Flacco this season to keep the team in playoff contention, said the difference in talent among 98 percent of the N.F.L.'s players is negligible. Eliminate the elite tier of players — the Aaron Donalds and Aaron Rodgerses of the world — and "the difference between player A and player Z" on his roster is the opportunity they get to take the field.

"You're looking for guys who feel great about stepping on the field and not skipping a beat when their time comes."

There's little in the course of a season that prepares a backup for those moments. Before Sunday, Purdy said he spent most of a given week in the film room or running the 49ers' scout team — mimicking the offense of the team's next opponent. Repetitions with the starting offense were mostly nonexistent.

Instead, after each practice, Purdy met with the quarterbacks coach Brian Griese and walked through every play that was run at practice.

But in a game, "I just visualize what I've been doing at practice and rolling, it's live, I'm going to get hit, there's going to be contact going on, but I just get to go out there and just be efficient.

As their value to their teams rises, so too do backups' salaries. Huntley, who went undrafted out of Utah in 2020, is playing for the Ravens on a 1-year deal for $895,000. He earned it by replacing an injured Jackson for four games last season. (Jackson, who has a sprained posterior cruciate ligament, is expected to return this year, but Huntley will likely start Sunday against the Steelers.)

Purdy is in the first year of a four-year rookie contract worth $3.7 million, or about $934,000 annually.

Both are near the bottom of the pay scale for backups, a market that Chris Cabott, the agent for Rush and Heinicke, said is growing. "As more of these quarterbacks are getting opportunities, and the salary cap continues to grow, we are close, maybe months away from an eight-figure salary for some backups," Cabott said.

Aside from Garoppolo, who signed a base deal of $6.5 million before the season to play behind Trey Lance, the three best-paid backups in the league are Miami's Teddy Bridgewater ($6.5 million annually), Buffalo's Case Keenum ($6 million) and the Giants' Tyrod Taylor ($5.5 million). And for good reason: The three have spent nearly 30 years combined in the league and have won 88 total games as starters.

Bridgewater took Minnesota to the playoffs in 2015 and made the Pro Bowl. In 2017, Keenum led the Vikings to the N.F.C. title game. Taylor made the Pro Bowl in 2015 and in 2017 led the Bills to their first playoff berth in 18 years.

Other backups have similarly stood out this year. Without Rush's early-season steady play, the Cowboys would not be 9-3, nor would Washington (7-5-1) still be in playoff contention without Heinicke. Commandeers Coach Ron Rivera said Heinicke would remain the starter ever after Wentz was cleared to play.

In the Seahawks' Geno Smith, backup quarterbacks have their patron saint. Smith started his first two seasons in the league for the Jets; after an injury, he was relegated to the Jets' bench for two seasons. Smith then spent the next four years as a well-traveled second-teamer. He backed up Eli Manning for the Giants, Philip Rivers for the Chargers and Russell Wilson for the Seahawks.

When Seattle traded Wilson to Denver this off-season, Smith got a shot to show that it was time well-spent.

"All three of them are Hall of Fame quarterbacks in my opinion," Smith said. "And being in the room with those guys and just learning football, being in different football systems, being around different coordinators, I was able to gain a ton of knowledge."

It has paid off. Smith leads the league in completion percentage (72.7), and his passer rating of 108.7 is second only to Tua Tagovailoa of the Dolphins. He has thrown 22 touchdowns and has the Seahawks (7-5) a game behind the 49ers for first place in the N.F.C. West.

As a result, Smith's $3.5 million salary is likely to grow when his contract is up at the end of the season.

"I understand that there has been a gap, but I've never lost confidence in my ability or the things that I can do on the field," he said. "I'm not star-struck or anything by this opportunity. I've been working my butt off."

I don't even want to post a laundry list because it would be too long. The one killer was the series where they threw two back to back deep passes late in the 4th. Playing to overtime and playing for a tie.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Giants returned to work today after their three-day, post-Thanksgiving break and for the first time since 2016, they will enter December with a winning record and a legitimate chance to make the playoffs.

Losses to Detroit and Dallas in their last two games left them with a 7-4 record. If the season ended today, the Giants would be seeded sixth in the NFC.

But there's a long way to go. The Giants have six games remaining, including five against teams currently owning winning records and three against the top teams in the conference – two vs. 10-1 Philadelphia and one against 9-2 Minnesota. The four-game gauntlet through the NFC East continues Sunday at home against the Washington Commanders, winners of three in a row and six of their last seven games and who sit a half-game behind the Giants at 7-5.

"It's definitely exciting," rookie outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux said in a virtual news conference today. "Dabs (head coach Brian Daboll) talked to us today, and he kind of gave us that idea that the beginning of the season starts now. So, everything we've done has put us in position to go for it all. So, we can't get too far ahead of ourselves. But it is a big task at hand that we have."

Thibodeaux played on three teams at the University of Oregon that were a combined 26-9 and played in three bowl games, so he is aware that having tangible goals late in the season helps players fight through mental fatigue and physical discomfort.
"Definitely," he said. "Not even just the playoffs and that, but just the idea of having those mentors like (former Giants) Michael Strahan and Carl Banks in the building – even Jessie Armstead – just to give you those insights to, 'This is where the biggest guys step up.' So, it kind of gives you that extra thing to play for – extra motivation."

Offensive lineman Nick Gates, who played every snap at center vs. the Cowboys on Thursday, said the Giants can't look too far ahead.
"We've just got to be playing consistent football and everybody has to be on the same page," Gates said. "First off, we've got to start by going 1-0 against Washington and winning this game this week. That's where our focus is for the week, and we've just got to play good football. Definitely nice to play meaningful football in December. It's the first time that's happened in my career, so it's definitely nice, it makes it mean something to you."

Thibodeaux insists no magical formula or radical change is needed for the Giants to return to the success they enjoyed in their 7-2 start.
"(We have to) just continue harping on the game plan, get everybody healthy and play for 60 minutes," he said. "I feel like that's the only place we kind of took hits. That last game we weren't able to really finish it, play for all 60 minutes and hold up on the back end. So now that we have a new fresh week, we just got to make sure we stick to our fundamentals and play for 60 minutes.

"I don't think our swagger is gone. I don't think anything about who we are, and our character is gone. I just feel like it's going to take more confidence for a lot of guys who have to step up and take on these bigger roles."

The Giants will host the Commanders and Eagles the next two weeks, their final division home games. They will then hit the road for games in Washington and Minnesota. While the Giants are playing the Eagles in Week 14, Washington will have its bye, so the Commanders will face the Giants in consecutive games.

The Giants' final two games are at home vs. Indianapolis and at Philadelphia. Those games will be played in January, but Thibodeaux knows the significance of the next few weeks.

"December football is the most important football," he said. "So, now that we're here, we definitely have to crank up the intensity, crank up the sense of urgency. But again, it's not getting too ahead of ourselves. I think it's just everybody doing their job to a high level and playing for the guy next to him. I feel like we'll come out with the outcome that we want."

Big Blue Huddle / Is Daniel Jones The Giants QB in 2023
November 28, 2022, 11:44:30 AM
This is a pretty balanced Podcast exploring some key points and clues that Joe Schoen has put out. For example, Schoen told Barkley they wanted him back and they went through contract negotiations on that bye week. They didn't with Jones and he said they have the rest of the games to evaluate him. He clearly has reservations.

Big Blue Huddle / 2 Teams 2 points for the win
November 27, 2022, 07:16:01 PM
Earlier Trevor Lawrence led the Jaguars to what would be a game tying TD but the HC went for the win and they converted. Then with little time left the Ravens came to the get enough yardage to have a try for a record setting 67 yard FG Tucker. It fell a yard short.

Just now Justin Herbert did the same and they went for the two point conversion to win the game.

Exciting games.

Big Blue Huddle / @TalkinGiants Offensive Line Report
November 22, 2022, 02:40:51 PM
Good breakdown by Bobby Skinner on Lemieux, Gates and Thomas. Justified what my glances saw with Gates on how well he played his first reps at Center. What a feel good success story this has been for this young man who was so resilient and fought through the adversity of a catastrophic injury. His buddy the owner at the House of Mozzarella must be absolutely delighted.

Unfortunately when Bredeson comes back off of IR, Lemieux looks destined for the Practice Squad. Just too many mental errors and rusty technique.

Bobby also touched on how poor Oline play effected the Run game too. Unless that player is Andrew Thomas and showed how SB should just shoot behind him. Also highlighted the AT hand circling technique and how that's working for him.

"Can Jones throw the Giants to success? The Seahawks limited Barkley to 53 yards and Jones was sacked five times as he threw 31 times in a 27-13 loss. There will come a time when Jones is asked to do more than he did to beat the Texans — throwing it 17 times in the NFL today is not the norm. The formula, thus far, is working."....
