The Front Porch / Re: What are we watching these days?
January 13, 2022, 06:52:16 PM

I forgot to mention, we also watched the new movie on prime about Lucy and Desi, Being the Ricardo's, I believe on Prime.

I have to say Nicole Kidman was Lucy, really, sometimes you couldn't tell if it was her or flashbacks to the real Lucy. Javier Barden was Desi and he was pretty good, Nina Arianda was Ethel, she was also OK and JK Simmons was Fred and he was great. The ongoing battle between Ethel and Fred was hysterical. They hated each other.

So the story of how Lucy and Desi got to TV, the problems they and getting the show on, and most of all, having Lucy be pregnant on TV, which was a major thing back then. it dealt a lot with the infidelities of Desi and really made Lucy out to be an SOB as far as anything she touched, be it the show, the script, her feelings for Ethel, and her relationship with Desi. There was no doubt Lucy was the boss and she let everyone know it.

So we ALL know Lucy and Desi, but I expected more from this movie. It couldn't make up its mind to be funny, sad, drama or comedy. Without a doubt, Ms. Kidman stole the show, but overall, I'm glad I saw it, but if I were to rate it 2 1/2 stars. It misses too many amrks and I found parts very boring.

Can't believe it has been so long since someone posted here. Are we NOT watching TV these days?

Let's see what we, or I, are watching.

On Netflix, I am fully engulfed in this series, Narcos Mexico. I am finishing season 2 with one more to go. I am very much enjoying this. it is about how the Mexican drug cartel (true or not) got started and how one man is trying to unite all the smaller groups into one major cartel. Obviously, there is killing, backstabbing, and lots of action. If this is your thing, I would recommend it.

I am also gearing up for the (finally) reappearance of Ozark. I am starting to rewatch season 3 to remember where we were and let the fun begin next Friday. If anyone has not seen this series, I would recommend it to the nth degree. It is one of Netflix's best efforts and it sure took a while for it to return. Can't wait.

My wife and I are also anticipating the return of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Prime. It seems like forever since this series finished season 3 9about 2 years at least) and now it is back on Feb 22. Like Ozark, we will rewatch the last season. Another series that we loved.

I also watched a 2 part series, Crime Scene, the Times Square Killer. I had heard good things about the previous Crime Scene show and since I do faintly remember this crime spree, I thought I would enjoy it. It is more a documentary than anything else, and I really never got into the style of it.  Maybe for some, it just didn't do it for me.

Exactly. While I get the point about holding gold as a physical asset versus actual cash, I'm not talking about an amount of money that is substantial enough that I'm especially concerned about it from an investment/future value point of view. It's more for peace of mind that if I could not access my accounts for some period of time, I would have enough cash on hand to not have to worry about basic needs for myself and my family for a period of time. I thought that's all you meant. I'm not really envisioning a scenario where physical US Dollars would be worthless.

What you interpreted was exactly what I was asking or questioning.

We have an investment broker who we have been using for many years. On this thought, I called him today to also ask about this very thing. He advised that one should have enough cash to make it thru a couple of weeks if you could not access your money.

Personally, I think I would feel better knowing I have maybe a good month's worth of cash.

I have thought that Gold would be a better option as money will never increase in value, but from what I have been hearing, if such a catastrophe occurred, and gold is the money, who do you sell it to, and what do you do with it?

Silly title, but I thought I would share something here.

As a Vet, I go to Veteran's organization meetings regularly. I went last week and several guys were discussing something, that I really never paid much attention to.

Many said, with the way the world is now,and other countries and organizations trying their damnest to hack into our systems, what would happen if say a North Korea (use anyone you want) was able to hack into our banking system and cause havoc as people wouldn't be able to get access to their money. I am not saying that their money would be lost as all probably have backup statements, but what do you do for money until things get right again?

The point being, several people said, besides having an array of weapons to protect what you do have, is it a good idea to have 'some cash' on hand so you can survive whatever happens? Would it be a good idea to have a 'stash' of Gold or another tradable commodity to 'get by' until things get straightened out, no matter how long it took?
Do you stash money under the mattress for emergencies?

People think that they would be able to run to the ATM and withdraw money but if the systems are hacked and corrupted, there would be no way of getting money for goods.

I sort of got to thinking about this and think that this scenario is worth a listen and act on.

Looking for what others think.

It's funny, some of us 'older' guys, look back on the 'Dark Ages' of Giants football, the late 60s, all of the 70s and early '80s as that, the Dark Ages.

When you get a bit older, you will look back at these last 10 years of Giants football as your 'Dark Ages'.

BBH Archive / Re: OMG Omicron

How much do we know about Omicron as far as it relates to the original virus as to how to protect oneself like towards shopping. We learned that we should wash our veggies, wipe down our packages, even change clothes if we went out to the store. We learned how long the virus lived on certain materials, like plastics and cardboard among other things and we adjusted our lives accordingly.
With Omicron, are these same procedures necessary? Do we know if this variant lives on a cardboard box, on the mail, on our daily paper? Are we still washing our food brought into the house, wiping down the milk cartons?
My darling wife still does it all and I chide her a bit for it, but is she being overly cautious or doing the right thing?

Part of the country's problems today is we have forgotten how to laugh at each other without someone being offended.

Good to see you again Bill, and your words are so true.

Redneck Birth Control

After their 11th child, a Kentucky couple decided that was enough, as they could not afford any more kids. So, the husband went to his doctor and told him that he and his wife didn't want to have any more children. The doctor told him that there was a procedure called a vasectomy that could fix the problem but that it was expensive. 'A less costly alternative,' said the doctor, 'is to go home, get a cherry bomb, (fireworks are legal in Kentucky) light it, put it in a beer can, then hold the can up to your ear and count to 10. The Kentuckian said to the doctor, 'I may not be the smartest tool in the shed, but I don't see how putting a cherry bomb in a beer can next to my ear is going to help me. ''Trust me,' said the doctor. So, the man went home, lit a cherry bomb and put it in a beer can. He held the can up to his ear and began to count! "1" "2" "3"

On this, I can not help you.

What I can do is suggest something different.

As I have said many times, we travel all the time using something from a vacation place called Resort Vacation Certificates. You buy these certificates from them, and you have one year to book something and another year to travel. The places you can book are usually time-share resorts but you do not have to do a tour, they are just the resorts looking to fill up unfilled units. So that makes traveling to beach resorts in the summer basically impossible, traveling to ski resorts in the winter the same. BUT, like us, who can and love to travel to these places off-season, you can stay at some really nice places for minimal cost (the cost of the certificate). It is like people who own timeshares and want to go to a different place, they exchange their time for something else. Well here, you have a certificate which you can exchange for a week at resorts that are available. You cannot stay at a place of your liking, only what is available on their website. So if you have a particular place or area, as you already mentioned, it will probably not be part of the program. Places like Kissemmi, and Vegas are always available, but only certain resorts in that area.
There are several outfits that do similar things like Armed Forces Vacation something or other and a couple of others.
We have stayed at many 4-5star resorts, and we have stayed at 3-3 star resorts. All are like apartments, have kitchens and bedrooms according to what is available. It is no gimmick and again there is no timeshare presentation, tour, or anything like that. We have been using them for about 10 years now and love them.
If you want more info PM me and I'll try and fill you in.

True story. I highly doubt it

A good looking man walked into an agent's office in Hollywood and said
"I want to be a movie star." Tall, handsome and with experience on
Broadway, he had the right credentials.

The agent asked, "What's your name?"

The guy said, "My name is Penis van Lesbian."

The agent said, "Sir, I hate to tell you, but in order to get into
Hollywood , you are going to have to change your name."

"I will NOT change my name! The van Lesbian name is centuries old. I
will not disrespect my grandfather by changing my name. Not ever."

The agent said, "Sir, I have worked in Hollywood for years.. you will
NEVER go far in Hollywood with a name like Penis van Lesbian! I'm
telling you, , you will HAVE TO change your name or I will not be able
to represent you."

"So be it! I guess we will not do business together" the guy said and
he left the agent's office.

FIVE YEARS LATER.... The agent opens an envelope sent to his office.
Inside the envelope is a letter and a check for $50,000. The agent is
awe-struck, who would possibly send him $ 50,000? He reads the letter
enclosed...

"Dear Sir, Five years ago, I came into your office wanting to become
an actor in Hollywood , you told me I needed to change my name.
Determined to make it with my God-given birth name, I refused. You
told me I would never make it in Hollywood with a name like Penis van
Lesbian After I left your office, I thought about what you said. I
decided you were right. I had to change my name. I had too much pride
to return to your office, so I signed with another agent. I would
never have made it without changing my name, so the enclosed check is
a token of my appreciation.

Thank you for your advice..

Sincerely,

Dick van Dyke
