Take a relook at the tow you didn't get on my last group.

#1 should really be a softball--a really old movie, and a laugh-out-loud comedy. Read it carefully and see who would say something like that.

#3-- a more modern 'epic' movie. Not the main quote (one of many) but very recognizable.

Blood Simple was just on some station and I fully enjoyed it AGAIN. One terrific movie. Dan Hedaya and M. Emmet Walsh were just outstanding.

Out of the list of movies, there were a few I hadn't seen, and the only two I can say I did not like were Barton Fink and Inside Llewyn Davis (which I hated), but the others, just great movie-making.

I did and still have no idea. I'm sure I've seen it, probably liked it, but still have no clue.

IMVHO, at this time in my life, I would rate 'The Godfather' as the greatest American movie ever made. Funny, as many feel Godfather !! was better, but you never hear it mentioned as greatest movie.

Why, just so many things

Wonderful acting by so many people
maybe the best-written movie ever
Fabulous score
Maybe a movie many could relate to
So many memorable lines that people took with them after seeing the movie
Scenes that were really never done on screen before (the horse's head)
Superbly directed
Unbelievable cinemaphotography
Truly a cinematic masterpiece all the way around.

Batman (the one from 1989)

Star Trek, isn't it?

You are right on. I will give you credit for the Star Trek one. Actually, it was in one of the movies, Star Trek, the Wrath of Khan (maybe the best one of the entire set ). Spoken by spock.  The saying was really the motto of the TV series but never spoken in any episode.

Any guess on the first quote?
It was from a comedy from 1950

I don't think I can single just one out. But if I had to make a short list, some that would for sure be on it would be (in no order of preference):

Goodfellas
Silence of The Lambs
Shawshank Redemption
Usual Suspects
Godfather
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
Boogie Nights
Fargo
Rope
Rear Window
Full Metal Jacket

If I absolutely had to pick one it would be Goodfellas. I have watched that countless times and can probably all but recite it.

great choice, always in my top 10 of all time

I know this is more about TV, but I do many movie reviews of more current movies that I have watched. I try to keep them in the thread about movie reviews.

I just watched Nomadland, a very dark and sort of depressing movie that is high on most people's lists for an Oscar nomination for best picture and just a stunning and marvelous performance by Frances McDormand as Fern, the star and basically the entire movie. I would recommend this movie as a dark slice of Americana and if for nothing else, the wonderful performance by Ms. McDormand.

See my full review in the movie thread.

The Front Porch / Re: Good (or bad) Movies PART 2

It is coming to that time of year, where the so-called 'best' movies are nominated for Academy Awards. I looked at what was nominated for the Golden Globes and those are a pretty safe bet for most to be included in the Oscar nominations. So it is that time of year to start to catch up on some of these movies, at least the ones that might interest me.
That said, yesterday I watched 'Nomadland' a movie starring Frances McDormand as Fern who the entire movie is about.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9770150/

McDormand may well be America's best actress right about now, supplanting Meryl Streep. She has already won 2 best actresses awards and she is the favorite to win one again this year for her performance in this movie. She IS the movie.

So, Fern just lost her husband, and the town where she lived folded up so she is on the road, living out of her van, traveling across America. doing odd jobs for money and working where she can, meeting all sorts of people along the way. I read all the reviews of this movie and all were glowing. I guess, overall it was an amazing performance by Ms. McDormand, but the movie is very depressing. It is like watching a movie like Grapes of Wrath in a way, as just the entire overtone of the movie is dark and depressing. There are moments that are full of like, but, for me, I was expecting something more. Even the music score is bluesy (if that is a word) and depressing.
It is a slice of Americana that has been lost but it was an interesting watch.
I would recommend this movie, if not, just to watch Ms. McDormand's performance alone. Kids will definitely get bored with the movie, but it is suitable for everyone. Myself, I would recommend it to teens and above, but even teens will get bored as nothing gets blown up, not even close.

Lenn: My favorite movie ever... if I must do it, I'll do it... The Wizard Of Oz (1939).  Bob

PS. If you had asked what I believe is the greatest movie ever made, that would be much much more difficult to answer.....

I did say in my OP that what one thinks is the greatest movie ever made would be a topic for a different thread.
Start it if you like.
