Quote from: AZGiantFan on Today at 02:11:39 PMHe hasn't shown that the talent, and the health needed to exploit it, is still there for 3 years.

I only care about this year. He is still better than any other TE on the roster.

The reports I read is that the Patriots are laughing at trade offers (like Gettleman with his #2 Barkley pick) and are dead set at taking a QB there.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Draft Survey

Have the Giants ever draft a WR at #6 or earlier? Ike Hilliard was taken 7th overall.

This is why I do not understand the complaints about Slayton's $6 million salary. He's getting paid 20% of the highest paid receivers but some fans want him cut to make our mediocre receiving corp even weaker.

Quote from: AZGiantFan on April 23, 2024, 09:02:18 PMBut who wants a player whose motivation is making up the money the divorce is costing him?  And then there is the element of the mental and emotional distraction.  It may be harsh, but this makes me want to cut him even more.

Because the talent is still there and it is better than anything else on the roster. With only 6 draft picks and many needs we may not draft a TE. You can't just go into training camp with Bellinger, Cager and the 2 nobodies they recently signed. I'd rather see how he looks this summer.

More like throw up jerseys than throw backs.

Well divorce is expensive so if he needs the money why retire?

"Sometimes you just don't want this to end" - John Madden while Jim Burt jumped into the stands to celebrate with the fans. This part might be cut off at the end. I remember this from our VHS recording.

Quote from: PSUBeirut on April 22, 2024, 02:32:55 PMThe guy that sticks out to me as most surprising will always be Thomas Lewis.  That dude was NOWHERE on my radar or anyone else's in the 1st round.  I just remember watching the draft and the hosts all scrambling to see who he was and they didn't even have a graphic for the guy so all they patched together was a random screen shot with his helmet on from some game film.  So embarrassing.  =))  =))  =))

George Young could not draft a stud WR if he tried. His best was Earnest Gray in his very first draft. Issac Bruce was still on the board when he picked Lewis. Didn't he justify his pick reasoning that because of the swirling winds of old Giants Stadium he preferred short route guys over deep threats?

Amukamura surprised me the most because it was not a position of immediate need coming off a 2010 with Terrill Thomas, Corey Webster and Aaron Ross. Prince barely played as a rookie even with Thomas out for the year. Obviously it all worked out since we won the Super Bowl but I thought taking a DB was a head scratcher.

Quote from: ozzie on April 22, 2024, 01:37:45 PMIt's funny you brought this up, Rich. Just yesterday my friend and I were discussing that in the NFL, if you're drafted anywhere in the first 3 rounds, you're expected to contribute almost immediately. If you get drafted into the NHL or MLB, it could be years before the club brings you up to the "Big Squad". You play in their system, get conditioning and coaching and they groom you to be ready for the big leagues. There are exceptions of course, but most draftees are given time to develop.
I don't know how the NBA handles this as I am not a big hoops fan.
Funny how different leagues take different approaches to this.

The NBA had a D-league but from what I understand only 2nd round picks and undrafted players get assigned there. NBA top picks go straight to the NBA and learn on the job. If they are not ready they are mostly practice players/reserves.

I love that MLB and NHL have a dedicated minor league and that the NHL allows draft and follows where players are encouraged to continue their development in Canadian Junior leagues or at the NCAA level instead of being minor league pros as teenagers when they are not mentally ready.

BB said he was the only rookie he coached that was NFL ready on day 1, not of all time. Barry Sanders held out of training camp as a rookie and had 80 yards or so with almost no practice in his first game.

Quote from: Giant Obsession on April 17, 2024, 06:18:35 PMWHY are we even concerned with dime a dozen WR and way over the hill TE.

THIS is a major reason we have the lack of roster talent.  Let Slayton eat up someone elses cap space for average at best (in a good year) production.

Waller.....c'mom....please.

Do you realize how much worse this offense would be without Slayton. He IS the talent. It's him and 1st-2nd year players.

It is so predicable how this forum turns on any player who seeks a raise or extension.

Quote from: nb587 on March 13, 2024, 07:13:59 PMI think a few college football issues might affect the NFL and not just NIL.  With the big tv money going to the colleges, I think the NCAA will be lucky to be in existence in a few years. The big time colleges will create a super conference and I can see them not taking a back seat to the NFL on scheduling and other matters. They may want to be a feeder league to the pros; they may end up forcing the league to pay way more for the kids to go pro (as if the colleges are not pros now).  Also, there was a recent ruling that allows college athletes to unionize.  That will become a big deal

By what you are describing it sounds like this plan moves the "colleges" further and further away from being a place of learning and more of a minor league pro system. So why still call the teams in this conference College Football?
