Quote from: DaveBrown74 on Today at 03:02:28 PMI'm normally a fan of trading down in certain situations, but I don't want to do it this year. Our offense is just a mortal embarrassment. If we're not going to get a QB, getting an elite young receiver with all pro type talent would be me second choice of things to do. I want a guy who legitimately strikes fear in the hearts of opposing DCs. A guy like Nabers would do that.
DB, I'm not discounting the impact of someone like Nabers, but how effective would that impact be if the QB was not good enough to feed him the ball?

Quote from: expatriot on Today at 02:43:23 PMI am on record as not being a Jones fan BUT how often does a team have a shot at getting a real IMPACT player (of which the Giants have very few)??? So unless something really weird happens, take Nabors or Odunze at 6. both of whom have a real shot at being legit IMPACT players, more so than any of the QB's which are always a crap shoot.(ask the 49ers)
For a receiver to have an IMPACT, he needs a QB to get him the ball. So one piece of the IMPACT puzzle will be missing if they daft Nabers or Odunze.

Nabers would look good in Giant blue. Whether he gets the ball much in games with the QBs the team has is another story.

Should we hope the GM draft what the Giant fans want? Or draft who he thinks will be best for the team in the future years?

If the Giants are not going to trade up for a quarterback they really want, then I really would like them to trade down to acquire picks. I don't know why, but I think Penix flies under the radar and could be the best of the bunch. Just a feeling, nothing more. How about Penix paired with Thomas or Pearsall or one of the other very good receivers out there this year?

Quote from: Jclayton92 on Today at 02:14:04 PMIf we draft a Wr how is that wr going to transform our offense?

If Slayton and Hyatt got under utilized, why wouldn't this new Wr?

The weapons do not matter if you don't have someone to get them the ball. Whether that's Lock or Jones, any skill that comes in will be under served until the Qb changes.

Slayton caught 50 balls as a #1
Hyatt caught 23
Robinson caught 60

I just don't see any skill producing like people would want them to until someone is brought in to throw down the field.
He won't significantly. You are right. Without a big play QB, the big play WR won't be much of a factor in 2024.

I would not consider the QB as a star, but the most essential element on the team (in today's NFL). Once you have your QB you can fill holes. If you can't find your QB you fill the holes (lines, defense) until you get that QB. The hood ornaments, or "stars" WR and RB (all the easiest to fill) can come when they come. They are luxuries you can pick up once all else is established.

Quote from: Ed Vette on Today at 07:26:44 AMThe intangible here is the line of building a team and at the same time rejuvenating a disappointed and disgusted fan base. The easiest way to do the later is to draft a new Franchise QB if the right one is within reach. If you can't do that, or it puts the team in a hole for an extended period of time, then high profile talent at key positions will keep the fans in their seats. This is a business with a short window for the decision makers.
Yes I agree with this to an extent. The window is short. But if the high profile talent is wasted and the results are still sub par, the fans in the seats will get very antsy. That is why this year's draft is probably the most compelling for the Giants than any in memory. Though I think what they have to do is clear cut, it really isn't. There are so many factors to consider. But again, as I said above, I am not thinking 2024, but beyond that. I don't think anyone can realistically think the Giants can suddenly be a power next season.

Quote from: katkavage on April 18, 2024, 04:43:41 PMThe QB won't start for the Giants in 2024, so no, nothing like the mess Young was put in.
And 2024 will be rough whether the draft a QB or not. I'm looking at 2025

Quote from: TONKA56 on April 18, 2024, 04:04:12 PMHere's a hypothetical, because why not?:

How do you all think Jones would perform if he were swapped with Brock Purdy? I continually here that Purdy is nothing special and he just quarterbacks a loaded offense.
Purdy displays much better awareness than Jones. He is a better QB, talent around him aside.

Quote from: T200 on April 18, 2024, 03:39:43 PMI get it.

He does just enough to give hope but lacks the supporting cast to elevate the team. QB Hell.
That right there. Unless you are the 85 Bears or 2000 Ravens, it's just not gonna happen with Jones. Go through his career and look how many games where he put the team on his shoulders and beat a real good team. (And I can hear the chorus of excuses blowing in the wind).

Quote from: T200 on April 18, 2024, 03:25:47 PMI like Schoen but he's been burned by Jones twice and it's clear that Mara is still providing a negative influence on the roster.

I truly feel that after the playoff win against Minny, Mara, in some way, shape, or form, let Schoen know that he wanted to get a deal done to keep Jones. Some sort of compromise was made to give Schoen a reasonable out after the second year.

If Jones happens to lead this team to another playoff victory, Schoen will have a helluva time ditching Jones.
After five years, I've seen more than enough. Jones is not horrible. He's not a bust like Zach Wilson. But he's not gonna get you where you want to go either. His ceiling is maybe a 15 ranking. He can't go higher than that and if the Giants keep the status quo, there will be rookies that will be ranked higher than Jones after next year. And yes he says he had a stinger last year. And a torn ACL, which for him to even get to 100 percent will be October at the earliest. As a Giant fan, I hope for better. Simple as that.

Quote from: Jclayton92 on April 18, 2024, 02:19:13 PMTheir GM Wolfe said they were wide open either yesterday or today. Their issue is having zero talent anywhere really. So they need even more than the Giants need.
The Pats will be in a Bryce Young situation if they take a QB. Whoever he is, he will get battered. They have nothing.

The problem in all this is that you can't conveniently put pillars together in the order you might want. If you are drafting high and you need a QB but have weaknesses in the other categories do you pass on the QB, build up those pillars and hope (because that's all you got) that some year you'll find the QB to fit into that program.
