Rushed it. I knew both categories I didn't get but fell for some of the traps early and just couldn't put it together.

Dave,

I concur. Wpuld rather have a corner, but Nubin is a great alternative.

I can't believe the Commodes traded with the Eagles, handing them DeJean. Cooper is going to burn them. How stupid.

Nubin is the consensus best safety in this draft. Some considered DeJean a CB/S (can play either), so a case can be made for him, but Nubin is everyone's consensus best pure safety. PFF states that, and they have him as 31st on their big board. He is an absolute ball hawk who will cause turnovers, he can make plays behind the line, and he can help with the run. He doesn't have blazing speed, but he has enough, and he will make up for that with his instincts. He is also well built.

I have no issue with this pick. It's a little frustrating that all the remaining good corners went right before we picked, but with only six picks this year and with potentially needing draft capital next year to move up to take a QB, I don't think we were in a position to trade up this year other than in the first round to get Maye.

So I'm fine with this. Taking the best safety in the draft at 47 when you just lost your best safety in free agency is hardly a dumb move. Would I have taken someone like Melton or Kool-Aid over this guy if I had that option at 47? Yes, probably. Would I have moved up? Probably not in this case (for the reasons stated above). So I think it's fine. No issue here for me.

I don't think Jones will be the QB for the next two years, first of all. It's not impossible, but my base case is he will be gone after this year. Even if he plays like he played in 2022, which I know some here think was really good, I think they will be looking to go in a different direction after the season is over. He'll have to play multiple cuts better than he has ever played before to stay in my opinion.

Of course, if the team is something like 9-8 this year (I am not at all saying they will be, just if), then they'll be in a tough position to draft a QB. They'll be looking at picking up the scraps outside of the top 10, or giving up multiple future first rounders to move up in what figures to be a weaker class than this year. So there is that issue too.

One thing I know for sure is that if they didn't want to preserve the option of cutting Jones after 2024, they would have restructured his contract to not have to absorb a $47mm hit this year. So unless they suddenly do that (I don't know what the deadline is), we know that they're not all-in on him as far as the long term goes. We also pretty much know that they tried to move up to three and weren't able to. All the reliable sources like Rapaport have stated that as basically fact.

So as far as Daboll and Schoen go, I think if they move on from Jones after 2024, they're not going to be in a position where they're expected to suddenly contend with a rookie QB. I guess if this season is a total catastrophe Mara could just clean house, as we have seen him do before, but I think that is far from being base case.

I don't see Mara cleaning house no matter how bad the record is unless it's accompanied by a media meltdown and a lot of dirty laundry.

He makes plays all the time. Nubin is an excellent pick whom I've watched several times with the Gophers. He really surprises you with his natural instincts..baits qbs into picks..tackles well. A+ for me.

Ballhawk!

I was ready to pack it in around 10:30 last night but Joe hinted at a possible trade up back into the bottom of round 3.  That forced me to stay up for another hour watching until they finished the round and witness no trade.
