The NFL typically does allow for non-judgement call penalties to be challenged.  In this particular case I'm not sure it would have made much of a difference except yardage?  Even if it wasn't pass interference because the ball had yet to be thrown, the contact definitely rose to the level of illegal contact or holding.  Either way its 5 yards and a fresh set of downs.  It's a fair question because you can certainly challenge other aspects - like if pass interference is called you can challenge whether the ball was tipped, which negates the pass interference.

It certainly seems the friction with Wink Martindale was that Daboll liked to yell and deflect and Wink thought he was too established and should be above reproach.  Shame on both of them for acting like children.  Daboll wanted the big boy job - he needs to do it.

I realize it's not uncommon but I've always questioned the head coach also being a play caller.  If this is because they have only mastered one side of the ball then they really aren't a head coach.  They're a figurehead while the other side of the ball is usually relegated to an established coordinator.  I've always thought the success record of special teams coordinators who turn into good head coaches is because they have to be considerably more circumspect and intimately know what the offense and defense are doing in addition to their own duties.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Are the Chiefs done with Toney
January 22, 2024, 11:59:37 AM
He's become a punchline for the Chiefs now - with fans openly mocking him.

"I see you Chiefs, making sure KT can't line-up offsides again"
"Kadarius Toney is out?  I'm not sure how the Bills overcome that one, he was their secret weapon"

I won't say the Chiefs "lost" the trade - he made 2 plays in the Superbowl that probably bought him enough goodwill to ensure the trade wasn't a complete bust.  But I'd be very surprised if he's a professional beyond another year or so.

I openly advocated for the Giants trading down in 2022 with one or both first rounders and securing Linderbaum as one of the picks in the middle of the first round, and was routinely laughed at here.

"You can't spend first round capital on interior linemen when you have top 10 picks" - really?  I believe you can, but we often believe gambling on a tackle is better than a sure thing at guard or center.  Good teams like the Ravens have been doing this for years, grabbing incredibly polished guys at under-drafted positions.

Not only did they get a ProBowl plug-and-play center, they got Kyle Hamilton earlier in the first at safety (another underappreciated first round position) who turned in a fantastic season as well (4 ints, 3 sacks).

This is how the Giants need to avoid the dreaded "we did just good enough to not be eligible for a top tier quarterback" routine.  Stop swinging for the fences and just hit a few singles.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Eagles Fans Are Melting Down

Quote from: MightyGiants on January 16, 2024, 12:23:02 PMAll last offseason, the punditry told us that Howie Roseman was a genius and the Eagles could do no wrong.  It was pretty much ordained that the Eagles would be back to the championship game and were the likely NFC representative in the Super Bowl.

Everyone ignored the Super Bowl hangover.  Everyone ignored the Eagles were acquiring players with injury and character concerns.  Everyone pretty much ignored the loss of the OC and DC.    They ignored the fact that many of their key players were getting older.

I guess the Eagles didn't tank their last game of the season, they simply sucked.  I am looking forward to an offseason that is free of talk about how brilliant the Eagles and Howie Roseman are.

I hate the Eagles as much as the next guy, but I would not remove the "genius" moniker from Roseman.  Players play, coaches coach.  The level of talent that Roseman assembled is not/was not the issue.  This feels like it's on the coaching staff and potentially a few players who were/are disgruntled who upset the apple cart.  AJ Brown might very well be one of those players.

Quote from: files58 on January 12, 2024, 01:20:06 PMThe league should get alot of heat for this. It pisses me off. I will call and try to get through to the league office, and give them a piece of my mind. F them.

If there's a wait to get to talk to someone it's because I'm ahead of you in line to scream.  I'm boycotting the game.  I already have Hulu with live tv, youtube for the sunday ticket, and Prime for Thursday nights.

While I understand the sentiment of "I want volunteers, not prisoners" approach to retaining coaches and players, I don't understand why when someone wants to leave the teams usually roll over and allow it without stipulation.  While there's no financial implications here, the Giants can and should be able to block him from certain teams if it creates a competitive disadvantage.  The Patriots certainly did that when Bill Parcells took a fake job with the Jets after voluntarily resigning his position.  Not sure I'd want to be vindictive but if you're looking to get out of your coaching contract, the new team should have to provide compensation, otherwise what good are the contracts to begin with?

Quote from: Gmo11 on January 08, 2024, 11:34:10 AMWouldn't the last couple weeks only fortify the belief that they need a QB?  The minute they got even semi-competent QB play the team became watchable.  Even frisky.  Imagine if they got ACTUAL competent QB play.  And there's no guarantee a rookie would provide that, but there's absolute a guarantee that Jones/Devito won't.  So I'd rather roll the dice on a top rookie prospect.  If they can't get one of the Big 3, I think whichever QB is left in Round 2 they should pull the trigger then.  Even if it's Nix or Penix or McCarthy.  I'd rather take my chances with them than tie the franchise to Jones any further than next season.

If Daniel Jones weren't carrying massive cap implications I'd be inclined to agree with you.  But the reality is that he's on the team next year.  Drafting a QB and having a $40m a year backup is probably the fastest way for Schoen to get a pink-slip and be shown the door.  I also simply disagree that there's a huge disparity in play between Jones and Taylor.  I absolutely think any game the Giants won with DeVito or Taylor could have been won with Jones.

I don't like the prospect of the Giants rolling into next season with Jones more than many here, but it's a reality that we need to accept because that's how the NFL is designed.  The Giants made a big mistake extending him, and drafting another QB in the first doesn't materially help the team, it probably hamstrings it by expending valuable draft capital, creating a QB controversy, and tying up cap space.

People think that going into next season with Jones as starter is like "doubling down" on idiocy.  It's not.  It's probably the best option we have in order to field a competitive team in the near future without hamstringing our cap and introducing more volatile change with wholesale personnel changes. I'm not espousing "patience" with Jones, I'm espousing "prudence" with regards to team culture and stability.  The prudent thing to do is draft BPA, see how things fall, and show Jones the door next off-season when that action doesn't completely decimate our cap situation, which for those of you with short memories, is exactly how we got into this mess in the first place.

There's still too many outstanding questions to understand the direction the Giants should take at #6.  What are the Bears doing with Justin Fields?  Who is taking over in Foxboro (if not Belichick) and what is the QB situation like after free agency?

I've asserted for some time that it's unlikely the Giants go QB in the draft and I think the finally 5-6 games landed in a way that will only reinforce that ideology within the front office.  There's too much money tied up in Daniel Jones with no easy "out" until next year.  The Giants showed some scrap with backup qbs, realistically could have (and should have) beaten both the Jets, Bills and Rams.  We had a host of injuries.  I think Schoen and the front office will view things through the light of "lost season" moreso than "lost team".  They'll look to augment the existing team and shore up weak areas and roll the dice with Jones again.

With the Giants at 6, I think you let the draft come to you and see what happens.  Getting additional draft capital by trading down should always be a priority, especially if you can land first round picks in subsequent years.  BPA seems the order of the day.

Big Blue Huddle / Dane Belton
January 08, 2024, 10:05:46 AM
Maybe it's just me because I'm looking at the stat sheet and feel that Belton had way more of an impact than it suggests.  A sack yesterday and another tackle for loss, two picks last week.  Really seems to have made the most out of the extended playing time he got in the last few weeks where before that he wasn't on the field more than 15-30% of the time.  Don't want to make a big deal out of very limited sample size but he just LOOKED the part to me the last few games.

I don't get the Slayton haters.  Dude answers the call all the time.  Even in the pre-season where there was an awful lot of noise that he was on the outside looking in, he continued to work.  He's a nice piece as a reservist and offers deep speed.  As long as he stays affordable I don't see why any good GM wouldn't keep him around.

There's absolutely no way the Eagles rest people unless it becomes a blow-out, or the score between Dallas/Washington is a clear blow-out at half time.  There's no quicker way to lose a locker room than to not play to win.  The Eagles want to win the division and host a playoff game.  Until that is clearly not in the cards, they're going to play their starters and gameplan to win.

The Bears will really be in the driver seat given they're locked in at number 1.  Washington and New England are very clearly headed towards an offseason where the head coach, GM, or both are fired (for Belichick it's one and the same).  I imagine their new regimes will want their guy at QB and might pay a premium to move up.  If the Bears demands are too rich, they might simply stay pat and pick Marvin Harrison Jr first overall.

We're only 115 days away from finding out....

This post shows a remarkable lack of clarity on how literally almost anything in the NFL works.  I usually try to bite my tongue and let people learn the game, but this inane.

- trading Jones would incur a massive cap hit, if you could even find a trade partner willing to take on his contract, not to mention he would fetch peanuts on the open market.
- sign and trade Barkley?  Are we playing baseball?  The rules in the NFL are extremely prohibitive to this scenario as again, it would incur a sizeable cap hit.  The Giants are better off either franchising him, or letting him walk and picking up the compensatory pick.
- Tyrod Taylor as starter?  What makes the Giants a better team with him at the helm?  He shows almost the same level of injury-proneness as Jones.

Quote from: MagicRat on December 31, 2023, 04:42:54 PMHow does the tie break work in the draft order?
Strength of Schedule is the tie-breaker (assuming there are more than 2 teams tied and those teams didn't play head-to-head).  The team with the lower Strength of Schedule picks earlier.
