Injured his hand in an ATV accident in Cabo. Reportedly out for a few week. There's a whole thread on it.

Quote from: Gman329 on November 07, 2022, 08:16:50 AMThat spread is too high.  Houston's organization is a hot mess but the team plays hard and they've been in almost every game they've played.  My line would be 4.5.  One thing for certain: our margin of error is far too thin to take anybody lightly.

Couldn't agree more.  Notwithstanding their current record, the Texans won't be an easy opponent. Given what is known regarding the GIANTS injury situation, I would have expected -3.5 and that is probably to big a spread.  I am far more concerned about the Texans and Lions today than I was a few days ago.

Should have appeared as too big a spread, not "to".

The spread is not a power ranking. It's a number designed to get 50/50 action on both sides. Each .5 line movement equates to
approximately $500,000 of betting action on one team.

In reality, the betting public moves the lines.

No disagreement; you are 100% correct regarding purpose of the line for the betting public.  With that in mind, I believe the line will come down due to the disproportionate action all of the casinos will be taking on the Texans.

I would love nothing more than a GIANTS blowout win this Sunday, but unfortunately I expect it to be a close win at best.  I expect the Sharp money will see it that way too, thus forcing the line to compress.

Ssigh.  Do we really need to hear this for the thousandth time?  Yes we know, the spread reflects bettor sentiment and an attempt at

Wow, we never realized this.   /sarcasm/
I'd rather be a disappointed optimist than a vindicated pessimist.

Not slowing my roll

The line has dropped to -4.5 as I expected given the GIANTS' injury situation.  Since it's not NCAAF and there are no style points awarded, a 1 point win will suffice for fans not counting on a cover.

Instead of gassing... I mean guessing about it, the best way to find out whether the spread is too much, too little, or a push is to decide which, and to back it up with a wager like in an actual honest to God money bet. As for the outcome of the game itself, which team win and which one loses, it won't make a lick of difference.

Cheers!

Almost everyone who contributed to this thread expressed surprise at the size of the initial spread and provided reasons why the oddsmakers may have erred in setting the opening line.  Call it "gassing" or "guessing", the line movement has proven these views correct regardless of the final score or whether any wager is ever made.

Can't speak for what others do, but I haven't bet on GIANTS' games for many years due to multitude of the heartbreaking games in which they have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.  Go Big Blue!
