Interesting strategy to go purely for maximum letter elimination in guesses two and three and not try to place the yellow letter. Seems like it worked.

Unless I get 4 letters (misplaced or placed) I tend to use all three establishing guesses.  I suspect it might increase my average number of guesses, but I think it decreases the number of failures. 

I am away so I can only play on my phone. Took me 5 today. For me very tricky word and I am happy to get it.

This was one of those words that everyone knows but actually getting it was a little tricky for me. Guess number five took me a few minutes.


BTW, does anyone know anything about "hard mode"? If you go to the upper right corner of the screen on the desktop (maybe on IPhone too, not sure), and click the "settings" wheel, there is an option to switch on "hard mode." It says "Any revealed hints must be used in subsequent guesses." I'm curious if anyone has tried that.

I wasn't aware of that mode, but I already ALWAYS use revealed hints in subsequent guesses. I don't use process of elimination, but come up with a word that I know a letter - be it yellow or green - will be in my next guess. Never thought of using it any the other way 

Interesting (to me anyway) how different strategies are applied by different people

I figured there'd be a few people whose streak ended today. I brought up this situation a couple of weeks ago. Even if you get the last four letters right on the very first try, there are at least seven words that use those four letters in a row and it comes down to getting the first letter right with nothing to go on except guessing and hoping one of the seven is right

Used the strategy on guess number four of sacrificing a guess to figure out which letter would be in the first spot (by using a word that had most of the possible letters), as there were more remaining letters that fit than I had guesses. I never seem to guess right on the first or even second guess in these situations, so this seemed like the sensible play.
