It wasn't too difficult for me.  I used "stare" as my starting word.  It gave me "t" as the second letter and "e" and "r" (possibly in an "er" ending configuration)  With the "s" ruled out and t as a second letter, it left me with a word that started with a vowel (and not "a")

I hesitated to try "utter" because if I were wrong, I wouldn't have eliminated that many letters, but it did fit...
