Marketed ad nauseam world-wide, over exposed and over played...yes.

Popular? Not to any true fan who actually care about the players.

It's become the 21st Century version of the Gladiators (no not the tv show, the real thing).

Show some true care and concern for the players post career and stop trying to play 6 days per week 23 weeks of the year, and regain the respect of the fans.

Are you of the opinion that before Goodell, the NFL "cared" about players more?  Or were more safety conscious?

I'm of the opinion that in this day and age, we should be evolved enough as a community, particularly given all the resources available, to care now.

Edit to add: and care more about those who are retired and continue to suffer.
From Simms to Eli (with an assist from Hoss) our Super Bowl Quarterbacks. Great defense and clutch QB performances...NY Giants Championship football.

I have an old profile still floating around: andrew_nyg....I am one and the same!

I'm not sure I follow. You're saying anyone who is an NFL fan today doesn't care about the players? or cares less about them than fans of 30-50 years ago?

Please explain how the NFL of the 1970s, 80s, and 90s cared more about the players than the NFL of today. How did the fans back then care more? Do you think someone like Mike Webster's family would agree with you?

I think its more the sort of popularity that attracts modern audiences to auto-tuned techo pop garbage instead of Beethoven, Led Zeppelin, and Charlie Parker. It's mostly just background noise that folks gather around in groups and sift though on their devices, but don't really invest in very deeply.

Now get off my lawn.

Do you watch NFL games?

So much for players long-term health but the onus remains on the NFLPA.

Many former players recognize their life spans will be shortened and still will take the cash

Vegas loves it and bettors too.

Ok, and it seems you have stuck around and continue to do so. As have I (also been watching since early 80s) and plenty of other middle aged or older fans here. So it would seem that not only has the NFL managed to attract fans from the younger, short-attention span, pop culture-seeking generations you are referencing, but it has managed to maintain fans that were watching several decades ago. All of that flies in contrast with the notion that Goodell is "ruining" this league or that the league is only popular with a certain type of fan that is somehow beneath fans that used to watch the league back in the day.

If anyone wants to say they don't like the NFL anymore, that is perfectly fine and that is their opinion, but I don't see how anyone can rationally dispute the league's current popularity.

Because one doesn't like nor agree with the way the NFL runs its business doesn't mean that they shouldn't continue to follow their favorite team.

I believe the league could and should do much better by its players (past and current), that doesn't mean I should sacrifice something I've cultivated with my favorite team and communities like this one.

When I referred to the league not being as popular to guys like me that's what I meant.

Because I'm not a fan of the league nor Goodell doesn't mean I'm obligated to boycott my team. I boycott by not watching every night that they air, nor buying any merch which is labeled only NFL.

And I never said that they shouldn't. I am simply disputing the notion that the league is not popular, or that it's only popular with non-serious, pop culture-seeking fans. I do not believe that to be a factually accurate statement. It is not backed up by the numbers, nor is it backed up anecdotally when I look at this forum and I watch/attend NFL games and see plenty of older generation fans in the stands.

LOL so perhaps my use of the word popular was a bit of an over reach. I wasn't trying to claim a demographic study of who likes or dislikes the current version of the NFL.

My claim was solely my perspective, and to share my disappointment in an organization that I grew up loving (I was born and raised less than 8 miles from the PFHOF).

Now my football consumption is mostly confined to our Giants, and a few select collegiate teams as well as High School.

I don't like the current schedule and if they go to 18 I'll like it even less.
