There aren't DC openings available
I'd have fired him too.
Imagine not being able to stifle Patrick Mahones in the 4th quarter and overtime.
Could not even accomplish that simple assignment.
Another great reason I hate the Niners.
Too bad this didn't happen a couple weeks ago before we hired Bowen. Not that I think that Bowen can't be a really good coordinator it's just that he's an unknown. Wilks is an excellent coordinator who is being scapegoated to protect the golden child head coach.

Thought you were serious at first.
Gave up 3 FGs and one TD in regulation and they fired the D coordinator.

Bowen trained under some very sharp defensive guys. He's 37 and has a few years of experience. Not sure how the process worked which resulted in his hiring but I think we got a good young talented DC.

One is a proven commodity the other isn't. Hope Bowen turns out to be the right call but I'd feel more confident with Wilks calling the defense heading into next year.
I'd take Wilks and never look back. How stupid was this...

Why? Because he was lucky enough to inherit 5x AP/PB players and manage not screw things up? What about his time with Az or Carolina, where he literally directed some of the NFLs worst defenses? As he's now been fired 4x, the data suggests he's only a good coach when half his unit consist of AP players. This reminds me of fans bemoaning the loss of Wink, forgetting that he produced a bottom 5 defense...
A coach is as good as their talent; if the Giants can acquire some, we'll be just fine. On the flip side, Wilks will probably struggle, as he's unlikely to find a team as flush with def talent as SF.
On the other side, they did give up almost 26 points a game this year.

Bowen has a few years experience as a DC. The Giants were criticized by many fir allegedly missing their top 2 choices for DC, neither of whom had any experience at the position. We have a guy with a few years under his belt but young enough to grow

And yet they held one of the best offensive teams in the league to 19 points in regulation despite playing on a short field several times.

So did the Ravens. The Chiefs were not the 2018-2019 version. They had Mahomes-Kelce-and a whole lot of "which one of you is gonna step up today".

The Ravens were the best defense in the league. What did KC score the 2 previous weeks?

The Chiefs were not one of the best offenses at least by the metric you picked (points scored)
In the regular season, the Chiefs were 15th averaging 21.8 points per game
In the postseason they were 8 out of 14 with 23.8 points per game
Interesting that the 49rs didnt consider Wink if they were already thinking of a change.
I guess the timing was just not there. Wink might finally have put them over the top. I think he would have stopped KC on that overtime drive. Hypothetically of course.
They seemed to have no pass rush at all at that point....perhaps just tired legs at that point
Funny- It was our lack of subs on the D line that led to our loss to the 49rs in the ice chip bowl. I remember Ernie Accorsi lamenting that on a NY radio show the next morning from his hotel room in San Fran
Ernie said he would take that loss with him to his grave
Does anyone think Wilkes would have been fired if they won?

It would be tough to fire a guy after winning your league championship.
Still, I couldn't help but feel te way Wilkes having his defenders playing so far off the LOS in the 4th quarter and OT helped the Chiefs win the game by gifting them easy yardage
While watching the game my brother pointed out purdy kept hiking the ball with 10 seconds left on the clock while they were trying to run out the clock
Just like the falcon and pats game
I don't know if this would have made a difference, but they kept mentioning all game they wanted to contain Mahomes to the outside, sometimes players mess up.

now why would Wilks want to come to this debacle anyway? The New York "3 and out" Giants?

There are no coordinator jobs available right now to my knowledge. Teams don't disclose what coaches get paid but considering that top college coordinators make in excess of a million dollars a year it isn't unreasonable that a top NFL coordinator is north of $2 million. Even if he can't command that he's still going to miss out on $1 million+ waiting for another gig next year. I have some pride but not nearly enough to turn my nose up at that sort of scratch.
