Normally with just 3 letters my guesses are geared towards more letters than guessing the actual word, but I deliberately gambled on needy, knowing I would only knock out "y" which isn't among my top letters to rule out.  So  I felt satisfied that my gamble paid off)

You do get to eliminate 5 letters right off the bat though. For you and me, using the same first letters, we narrow the choices significantly.

That's what I was going to say.  If you are playing at the hard difficulty setting, not hitting on any letters with the first guess is offset by all those eliminated letters

I have an app on my phone that allows me to play wordle games without being the official wordle.  I go back and play using my old strategy of 3 eliminating words and I can't believe just how much easier it is.
