Here's the explanation for yesterday's word.

I've chosen a word a few times that was accepted by the game and wasn't the answer but the bot after solving said there was only one word left and that wasn't it. Apparently it wasn't among the game words. The game shouldn't accept a word it would never use as a solution imo. That's when I knew there were all possible words it would accept.

I agree with your point. My issue is that they have a list of over 2000 solutions. They've only used 640+. Why pick a word that's not on the list?

I would think the NYT is using stats to monitor the game.  As the article suggests, they need to walk the fine balance between allowing the game to become too easy with making it impossible.   

Perhaps they saw too many people solving the puzzles over the last few days with too few guesses.  I mean, the prior day, all but one of us had birdies.  So they probably thought the easiest thing to do was toss in a tough one to bust a few streaks and shake things up.

Guano had a few things going for it.  It ended with an "o," which is unusual.   It also uses the unusual "ua" paring.  Plus, it's a word many people may not know.
