I don't think Zimmerman is guilty of murder but of manslaughter.  He is at least as guilty as someone who has had one too many at the local pub and has the misfortune of being involved in a traffic accident that wasn't his fault, but his blood alcohol level mandates that he be tried for manslaughter.

Again, a rent-a-cop with a concealed weapon has to share at least the same level of responsibility as a 'buzzed' driver for the 'accidental' loss of a human life.  (Florida state laws notwithstanding).

Sort of a poor analogy.  There was nothing accidental about Zimmerman shooting Martin.  He didn't accidently kill Martin like your 'buzzed' driver does.

Zimmerman, his injuries, and the eyewitnesses tell a story of Zimmerman screaming as he's being bashed by Martin.  Zimmerman intends to shoot Martin to save himself.

Separately, the theory of Zimmeman somehow attacking Martin just doesn't wash.  Think about it - the guy with the gun doesn't assault somebody else.  He's got a gun that can do all his talking.  And why risk a struggle where the other guy gets hold of your gun?  Doesn't make sense.

That's an interesting take but I cant help but think he is a coward.  That pistol gave him the shot of courage he needed to confront the teenage boy.  This was just a disingenuous attempt to be a tough guy that backfired and he ended up needing his pistol to bail himself out.

Can someone outline the facts in this case from the beginning? This all took place in a gated community? Did either of these men belong in that community? Why was Martin being followed by Z?

Zimmerman is a member of that community's neighborhood watch program.  There had been reported incidents of burglary there.

Zimmerman seems like a guy with rent-a-cop syndrome.

The whole getting out of the car thing could be considered a gray area to some.

If he is in his car and drives off is it considered an act of retreat and thus something the Florida laws apparently do not require?

Does the mere act of getting out of his car represent a confrontational act?  Is he not allowed to do so under the circumstances?

I dont know how to interpret any of this.  The lawyers will likely find a way to spin it to their satisfaction I'm sure.  In many cases, society frowns upon the man who fails to act in the face of crime.  Martin wasn't committing a crime though.  He was merely walking near a house in the neighborhood.

This thing is very ugly.  One thing is clear, an armed man should have much more common sense and should act with more caution.  IMO, the fact that he armed himself and then sought conflict is a bad thing for all gun owners.  A gun is not a license to stir trouble or provoke trouble.  If you are armed, and involve yourself in a situation that could spiral out of control, your first instinct will be to go for your weapon.  Bad and stupid.

I find it interesting that OCs around the league still see this as an area they must control.  Funny in the sense that I thought the media had already deemed what the 'triangle' implies as being obsolete in the first place.

anyone else suspect that JR will go DE at 32 and draft the future OL players in rounds 2-4?

I dont suspect it but i wouldnt be surprised.  We've got a possible situation at DE as Osi and Kiwi both only have one yr left.  Of course JR has openly volunteered the possibility of locking Osi up for another few seasons.  Then again, it could all be a smoke screen expressing his desire to keep Osi in hopes of maximizing his trade value.

JR is generally a straight shooter.  We all thought OSi was a goner two seasons ago when we drafted JPP.  That was as sure a sign for all Giants fans that Osi would be removed from the roster and there was rejoicing on message boards all over the place.  Nevermind JR said he wasnt going to be traded.  But this time could be different.  These are different circumstances.

What does all this mean to those who are capable of reading between the lines?  Nothing.  The tea leaves dont say a thing.  Some 3-4 team will draft Upshaw very early.  Mercilus will go higher than he is worth because pass rushing DEs are premium players though you wouldnt be able to tell based on how eager we are to get rid of one.

It's going to be ironic if we do make some move for Mercilus.  A one dimensional pass rushing DE who cant play the run.  I myself would like him.  Most of you shouldnt.

Eli only froze Chung for a fraction of a second.  Chung still got into the area of the field where the pass was thrown.  It was a perfect pass.  All the credit goes to Eli on this play.  The coverage was by no means shabby.  The ball was just dropped in perfectly and was by all counts undefensible.

This is strange.  I'm used to reading threads about the rookies' jersey numbers right now.

greg, the videos I've seen of him show him lined up in the backfield often.

Personally I prefer my 3-technique tackles to be pot smokers.  worked out well for Warren Sapp.

This is one stout looking corner

I love the fact that he has physicality in his game to go along with 4.4 speed.

love it.  How can you not?  We get a top 10 player.

This is also good news for Aaron Ross who will be freed up to train with his girlfriend.

But there is no lock.  The players drafted number 1 overall is someone a team can justify paying that kind of money to.

If the best player in the entire draft is a safety, he will not be drafted 1st overall because there is some kind of lame stigma attached with paying that position that kind of money.  He has to be QB, LTackle or DE.

What's ironic is that there is no stigma against making a Safety the highest paid defender in the league after a few yrs of proving his worth.  Yet they'll give it all up to a QB based on potential alone.

The LBs are at the very least the reason for a lot of plays regardless of system.  The LBs hammer away on the ballcarriers.  If you have hard hitting nasty LBs, the cumulative affects of all that hitting takes its toll on receivers and backs alike.  The next time a DLinemen or Safety hits the ballcarrier maybe the ball comes loose.  Maybe without such mediocrity from the LBs, the QB doesnt have the quick pass and maybe the DE gets the sack instead of the almost sack.

Also, the LBs have equal responsibilities in run and pass so the fumble, the sack, the interception are all in a LBs arsenal of big plays.

We dont scheme to our LBs because we dont have any worth scheming to.
