BBH Archive / Re: Tailgaters Start Here, then Branch Out
September 15, 2009, 09:17:05 PM

As I have already done, welcome to all the Tailgaters. I know you guys will like this place a lot. We have been around for a bit over two years. We broke away from another site because what we really wanted was a place to talk Giants football with intelligent posters without all the crap that goes with most message board sites. All we ask is that you treat every other poster as you would want to be treated yourselves, with class and decorum. While our numbers are not as huge as many of the other Giants sites, we sure make up for it with just great Giants talk, observations and insight into the game. You will see no flamers here, but we invite any poster from other teams who want to talk football, over here.
As you get to know this site, you will quickly see we are more than just a message board, we are truly a small family. We have get togethers, many posters talk regularly off the boards, and most of all, we share things other than football. Like a family, we have our little spats, but we quickly make up and get back to business.
Jump right in, or take your time and watch from the sidelines. But I know you will find this place to your liking.

Oh, just a word or warning, watch out for the one they call 'The Weeze'. He is a northerner who deserted us, and now is an old time rebel. he does mix a mean 'alligator juice cocktail' if you know what I mean. If he bothers anyone, just mention 'Hurricane coming' and he will quiet down.

Chief

Don't know if I mentioned it in another post, but we were in Germany at the same time
Ramstein AFB 9/66--9/69.

Were you that guy I wanted to buy a beer for, in that bar in Heidleburg???  For some unknown reason, a few of us, on these boards, have served at Ramstein. In fact, we have one there right now, doing his second tour there.

As I said, I can't argue with anything you have written. It's all in how you see certain players. As I said, I will always view YA as the best for the Giants as he was my boyhood idol. I really didn't think that winning a championship had anything to do with making you a great player. I like Eli, but I simply cannot put him on any list of great all time Giants.

Interesting aspect on things though. We have had several of these threads along the line. We get such differences as to the age group involved. Some have never even seen LT play, so how could they possibly know of what the Giants were about years before. Can you image these fans who basically only know winning Giants football with a few bad spurts in between. None of them ever experienced the 20 years of horrible football we have lived thru.

As you get to know some of our more know ledgable posters, many will contribute to threads like this. We used to have a young fellow, named Chris Allen, who was a complete authority on anything Giants. Was like a walking encyclopedia of them. He passed away a couple of years ago. Too bad, you would have loved him.

You go back a bit farther than me but I would not change many of your choices.

I would put YA Tittle ahead of all the others, and I wouldn't include Eli on any list, not yet anyway.
At RB, I know what OJ did for us in the SB, but he wasn't an all time great Giants player. I would definitely have Big Red, Alex Webster on my list, and even Tucker Frederickson ahead of OJ, but even he is a stretch.
No argument at Te, and WR seems pretty good, though I was never a fan of Grey. I know you listed Gifford at RB, but I would also include him at WR, as he played there at a very high level also, after he got hurt.
I know you only included 6 LBers, but if we could squeeze a few more in there, as that has always been the heart and soul of our defense, I would love to see Pepper's name there as well as Armstead.
I wasn't around to see Landry play defense back, so i would change that and include Mark Collins.
At punter you have Chandler, I might go for Jennings.
After that, can't argue anything.
Nice list though.

You remember correctly. It was an opening MNF game in 1988, and was Burts one and only TD.

Gosh, after reading you two old fogies stories, I now feel pretty young at 63. We have always kidded Sam about him being one of the 'older' Giants fans here, but now, you may take that position. Welcome aboard Jim.
While I became a full fledge Giants fan when my beloved 'Bum's' picked up and moved West, they have been in my art since birth. YA was and still is my favorite all tiem Giant player. You upped and left Valley Stream, which is only a couple of miles from where I live now, in West Hempstead, but just so you won't feel deserted, my daughter lives in Valley Stream today. If we ever get out of  we want to retire to Vermont, we also like the cold. Once again, welcome to our little part of the internet.

Welcome aboard Chief. Myself, I am 63 so we are from the same generation. I became a die hard when my beloved Dodgers, up and left us, after that, it was always and still is always, Giants.

I also loved to cruise. We try for (hopefully) one a year, as my wife is still working (for the NYC school system). We just got back from a Baltic cruise on the Jewel a few days ago.

Hey Pat. Is that your High School gratuation picture?? It's been a while since we met, but that is about how I remember you. Now, me, of course, have aged about 25 years in a 10 year span.  =)) =))
I am truly looking forward to talking Giants football with you again.

Just to add to what Rich has already said. This has been discussed among the moderators for a while and we feel it is a win win situation. With Pat, we would gain a valuable insight into football and the Giants,a nd she would gain a message board that has no equal in knowledge and discussion of the Giants.
Let me reassure anyone that nothing will change here. Our board will remain the same, and we will go on, just as we have always done for the past two years. We will not allow anything to change from the way we conduct ourselves, and we would hope to gain more valuable posters, who would share our passion for the Giants and discussion of said team. If anyone doesn't know Pat, she is a class act. We used to post together on a message board many years ago, and her knowledge of football and the Giants is second to on one.

But,a s we have said we would always do here, we will do nothing without letting the membership know about it first, and let everyone have some input.

Again, if this goes thru, things here will remain the same, only, hopefully better. We have worked very hard to make this place a class forum, and we would never do anything to jeopardize that.

Guys, I am afraid I am going to have to back out of the BBQ and geting up to Albany. We have certain family obligations that we just found out about and we are going away on vacation a couple of days later, and it will be jiust too much to get away at this time.

I can't tell you all how much this saddens me as I so look forward to meeting all my old friends and meeting some of the new people who plan on coming.

Guys, I will be thinking about you. have a great time and be sure to post some observations for the rest of us.

I am not a local, but looking at a map, you should be able to access the Northway (87) from Wolf's road.

From the North: Take Interstate 87 (Northway) south to Exit 1E. Off the exit, proceed to Interstate 90 east (Albany/Boston). Take Exit 2 (Washington Avenue) which leads right into the University at Albany campus. Follow University Drive (heading south) 3/4 of mile to Dutch Quad parking lot (public) and one mile to Recreation & Convocation parking lot (Giants/VIP).

and as soon as you exit, the university is right across the street. If you enter the university, just follow the route around looking for the tennis courts. You will come to the parking for people coming to camp. There will be some kids collecting parking fees, $5.00. Park anywhere. If you miss our group, you just need to walk all the way by the tennis courts, to the big dorm buildings. They usually have a huge blow up Giants figure there. Just go up the steps, you will see a huger tent selling all kinds of Giants stuff. Go thru that, and the fields will appear.
Again, if you are meeting the group before, then it's no problem. if not we will give you a cell number to call to see where most of us are.

As far as the BBQ is concerned, I don't know the streets, but it is about 5 minutes from the practice field. I'm sure some one can give you directions.

If any locals can correct my directions, jump right in. SUNY Albany is pretty easy to find, and the traffic in people coming to camp usually points the way.

Bring some things to get autographs as many of the players will sign, and bring a camera so you can take pictures of us.

The Front Porch / Re: Just a joke
July 29, 2009, 09:36:03 PM
A man and his wife were having some problems at home and were giving
each other the silent treatment.
Suddenly, the man realized that the next day, he would need his wife
to wake him at 5:00 AM for an early morning business flight. Not wanting
to be the first to break the silence (and LOSE), he wrote on a piece of
paper, "Please wake me at 5:00 AM."
He left it where he knew she would find it.
The next morning, the man woke up, only to discover it was 9:00 AM and
he had missed his flight. Furious,he was about to go and see why his wife hadn't wakened him, when he
noticed a piece of paper by the bed. The paper said, "It is 5:00 AM. Wake up."
